General Gaming Megathread: What are you playing?

Been playing and trying out some more old DOS games.
It sometimes does make me a bit too wishful for the past but I realize now that it is not so much that I want to live back in those times (it had its good points but also its bad points) but rather that I would like to experience that feeling I had back then again when gaming felt special.

That feeling has rather disappeared over the years just like with a lot of other things of Nerddom I used to enjoy.

A rather decent if too short action-platformer which really could have used more levels. Jumping is a little shit though to be honest.
Storywise it is kind of a weird mix between the original Mirage comic, the cartoon from that time, and the first movie.
It is still playable today and I actually prefer it to the side scrolling beat em ups the series is most known for. Nothing wrong with it but it becomes rather repetitive.

This one was actually made by Id software when they used to make games for a monthly games software magazine.
Pretty fun if a little simple but that doesn't mean that it is easy.

Ah the 90s when ninjas were cool. Actually they still are, most people have just moved on to the next trend.

Won Underrail a couple of days ago so I'm finishing up my Atom playthrough. I feel like an idiot for not realizing there was a skill tree in the game thanks to the 1.1 update. Upside now is that I can finally hit stuff with my PC's pistol (even instant killing with a critical shot at the eyes).

Finished FF7 Remake the other day as well and despite its divisive ending, I thought the game was pretty good. Maybe its because I don't have a lot of nostalgia for FF7 so I was not as upset unlike vocal people in other forums (i.e Reddit :puke:).

I am also replaying Underrail with a recommended Psi-build. I botched my original playthrough with a terrible build (pacifist sniper grenadier with a penchant for crafting while not having the attributes or perks for their talents) so I want to see how a good build will go. So far, a lot better.

They ruined Final Fantasy 7's chance at a good remake. Better off using mods to make the original what this one should have been. Now everything will be like FF15 I guess.

FF7 Remake is almost an entirely new game at this point. I suppose each will stand on their own.

You're not wrong there. I guess Nomura and Nojima had a big brain moment and wanted to make a double meaning for the title.
:smugoticon:

What are some of the changes that the developers have done to FF7.
I keep hearing about it in Youtube comments here and there and I think it is probably more than just body shape, right?
Have they been altering the script?

It might as well be a Reboot they changed it so much. Sephiroth is in Midgar. The combat is different. The story is drastically altered. It's like a retelling of FF7 in FF15's engine. I'm just saying that shit is so different I am surprised they didn't just do a sequel.

Kind of sounds like some of the RE remakes we have been getting.

To avoid spoiling to much, let's just say the ending changes things. There are some changes before the ending but these are more expansions to older levels.

Essentially, the Remake in the title has a double-meaning. Sephiroth seeks to remake the timeline and in the ending, the party kills the arbiters of fate, the Whispers, out of their volition (albeit with some manipulation by Sephiroth) to avert a presumed bad future. However, this may allow Sephiroth a chance to win as the timelines are no longer set. There is more to it like certain characters not being dead in the altered timeline (one significant character surviving in what appears to be an alternate timeline). This can be a positive in that new story beats can be added to an older game and allows for more character development but opens up the well for fanfic nonsense as well (like Aerith surviving). I am alright with it at the moment but wary of the potential pitfalls.

Plus the original FF7 still exists and hasn't been Reforged ala Warcraft 3 so there's that upside.

It sounds basically like "We want all the pie and eat it."

I never played FF7 but I did read up on it and I don't recall any stuff like time travel being in it or arbiters of fate which seems kind of out of place even if FF7 had its share of supernatural creatures.

This does sound rather like someone deciding to take someone else's story and alter it to put their own stamp on it and not just updating it here and there because people want to play a modern version of a beloved favorite.

And yeah, this seems to be made for fanfic and those fans who can't accept certain decisions by developers.

I swear if this all to allow Aerith to live plus causes Tifa/Cloud to die in her place, I will turn on this game hard. Many I've seen online have said something to this effect.

Been trying out some of the Wolfenstein 3D remakes in Gzdoom. It made me realize how really bad I am at these older FPS games but also that I do not really enjoy them as much as well.
I am not really a fan of maze running and secret hunting, the last mostly because I also have difficulty with that.

Bought the Extended Edition of Age of Mythology on sale for 8 bucks earlier this month and damn did they fuck this up. The main issue i have gotten so far is perfomance issues, which is ridiculous because this laptop runs games that have higher requirements. Had to do some stuff to get better perfomance, but this shit is ridiculous.

I'm beginning the Norse portion of the campaign, but i heard less than stellar things about the Chinese campaign. Which pretty much means that if you don't care for that and playing online, getting the original with the Titans expansion seems like the better deal. Much better performance and cheaper.

So I beat Last of Us (Still have to play through the Left behind DLC that was included on the PS4 port) and gotta say I liked it quite a bit. I still think the praise is way overblown, but the game itsell is pretty good, I played through on hard mode and while the basic shooting core of the game is very similar to Uncharted, the sneaking elements and the lower ammo availability creates a completely different dynamic that is actually very engrosing. The story was very by the numbers until the very last moment, I initially avoided the game because I thogut it was yet another one of those Paternity fetichism games like The Walking Dead and Bioshock Infinite, but to my surprise the game itself seems aware of the implications and nature of such scenarios and actually delivers are very somber, very depressing and raw conclusion to it.

Now I am looking forward to the second game.

Now onto the REmake.

A friend of mine got it early due to some shipping fuck up and was answering questions on gamefaqs while playing through it. I was hooked just watching it from the sideline but i loved playing it, I am not sure how the second game will be but i expect the worst and hope for the best!

I brought up Age of Mythology in my post above and learned recently that a Age of Mythology game was made for the DS. How i never knew about it is beyond me because when it was released (2008) i was all over the Age of Empires series and playing a lot of Nintendo DS.

It's also a turn based tactical game to make things even better. Gonna look for a copy on ebay.

The DS was a pretty neat handheld with so many games on it that you would not expect to exist anywhere. It's a shame the emulator is so weird to mess with. It really makes it worth buying the actual system.

I am still divided on if I should get some more games for it and the 3DS before they become too rare.
For a while I was considering getting several GBA games but those have become so expensive such as Castlevania Aria of Sorrow.

Big question is, when will I play them.

GBA games you might as well just emulate. Or get one of those handhelds that functions as a good emulator.

Oh I have one of those flashcard thingies now but I would much rather had my 3DS jail broken so that I could put an emulator on it but it is also updated with the latest firmware and I do go online with it from time to time.

I am rather divided on the issue if I should get another 3DS that is jail broken so that I can put GBA games on it.
I don't know what drove Nintendo but I honestly hate the D Pad compared to the alternative method of control the 3DS offers. (forgot what it is called)

Personally I would go with a modded PSP or Vita. It's what I had for the longest time.
