Uh, no. The scale and influence of social media is so massive that it recently just influenced the results of an election (and continues to do so in other areas). There was a point in U.S. history where the average citizen didn't even know who the president was.
A 90's teenager wasn't prone to having this constant loop of information from people beyond their observable space. 2015 Alex Jones has proven to be far more destructive than 90's Alex Jones. His sphere of influence was incredibly large thanks to being able to host his radio / podcast on Youtube, iTunes, and Spotify.
