Hi-Res Patches for Fallout1&2 & the BIS Mapper

But depending on what was changed in the fallout2.exe from the Mega Mod, it could break the game. :>

alright now the game is working ! :D

I reinstall the whole game, but not in path D:\ , this time i install in default path C:\ , then i apply the unofficial update and hi-res patch, and now the game can run perfectly.. tq to mash again :D

It should be OK. I compared the Mega Mod exe with the original, the differences are the sharpshooter fix, city limits patch, debug mode and world map speed fixes all of which can be handled by sfall. You may want to fiddle with the world map speed stuff though as I noticed the "WorldMapFPSPatch" setting is disabled in the Mega Mod's "ddraw.ini".

For mwu:
Good to hear you got it working :).

Hey Mash…is it possible to add a function to the resolution mod that allows the game to be played at whatever resolution you decide, but the map screen, inventory screen, character screen, and talking head screen remain at the original resolution (640x480) – so they fill the screen entirely. Using two resolutions almost simultaneously sounds difficult, is it possible…

It's already on my list, I haven't had the chance to take a serious look at it yet but it will probably be a tough one.

Hi, Mash. I have question related with 16-bit colors in the hi-res patch settings. How exactly this setting works? If i have set Mode=0 in ddraw.ini AND 16-bit colors in hi-res patch, which graphic mode will game use to run? Can be graphics switched to DirectX mode through hi-res patch setting, or it's possible only through sfall/ddraw.ini?

edit 10.6.:
..thanks for answer!

The 16bit colour option is mainly there for the non US versions of fallout2 which can't use sfall. It's only real purpose is to fix the psychedelic colours problem which sfalls DX modes also fix.
To avoid conflicting with one another, the hi-res patch will revert back to 8 bit colours if one of sfalls DX modes are enabled.

may be better would be to increase resolution of map/inventory/etc screen, so it could show more?

Another incremental update to the Fallout2 Hi-res Patch is available. Links in my sig.

I took another stab at fixing the crashes reported in the Screen Settings Window where the resolution list was empty. Now if auto population of the list fails resolution 640x480, 800x600 and 1024x768 will be added. For those affected let me know if this fixes the problem.
I also added an option to the ini to extend the path finding range. I've classed it as experimental as it may have some unforeseen side effects. If you notice anything strange let me know.

Edit:
Note for RP2.1 user, Be sure to copy existing settings from your current "f2_res.ini" before applying this patch as some setting are different. This version should be included in killap's next update if you would rather wait.

Im getting the

"unrecignized data found
fallout2.exe may not be the correct version
Patch has NOT been installed
Installation terminated"

message. Am I doing something wrong?

Thanks in advance.

Your trying to patch an unsupported version of the "fallout2.exe".
Not knowing your particular circumstances I'll take a guess and assume your running an older version. In which case I'd recommend updating your copy of fallout2 using Killap's Unofficial Fallout2 Patch. Be aware that doing this will invalidate your saved games if you have any.

Not if he's running the official 1.02 patch. In my latest unofficial patch updates I made sure that official 1.02 saves carry over just fine.

Thanks for the info Killap that's handy to know. But in this case I'm assuming he's running 1.0 as the hi-res patch should work fine with the old official patch.

Or a non-english language version of the game. I. e. with the german (even patched) Fallout 2 version, the high res patch will not work as well. It's needed to have to correct english Fallout2.exe (which comes with the RP or other Fallout 2 mods).

I installed it in English. the game is from a CD I bought in a store 1 week ago. Its a legal version of the 'fall out collection' = FO1,2 and tactics. I dont know if the official patches are added to later 'releases' of the game?

I tried updating with Killaps patch, but that gave me:

you're trying to use sfall with an uncompatible version of fallout
Was expecting 'Fallout 2 v1.02 US'

Fallout2.exe was an unsuspected size. expected 0x122800 but got 0x1222000
---

To be honest, Im really looking forward to play the game so Id rather delete all the patches. But If we could get it to work with the patches that would be even better ofcourse!

Could it be that windows7 gives a problem? I dont have any save games so I dont mind losing those :)

thanks again,
Kolaas

also: Ive been messing with compatibility and resolution for another problem I had. (when inserting the disc the install screen was very pixelated with weird colors) Could those settings somehow interfere with the patch(es)?

I didnt try any other patches than Killapp and HiRes

No idea what's going on there, sounds like the fallout2.exe was not updated.
At this point your probably better uninstalling and starting from scratch. First thing I'd change is don't install to the default directory under "Program Files" as this will avoid many Win7 UAC problems, I install my games under "c:\Games". You should also turn off compatibility mode, you can fix the colour problem with either the hi-res patch of sfall once you have the game installed.
So my advice is reinstall the game then the unofficial patch followed by the hi-res patch.

I'm having some problems and also some questions regarding the Hi-Res patch. Maybe someone can help out.

- Hi-Res patch enables 2 graphical modes: Hi-Res and SFall. What exactly is the difference between the two? What does the DX9 mode offers that Hi-Res doesn't?
- When I try to use SFall's DX9 mode (for any colour depth), the game runs in almost slow motion (scrolling the map or moving the character is very slow). And when I exit the game world into the main menu, the image fadeaway takes 30 seconds or more; why this is especially slow I do not know. I've just noticed that the fadeaway slowness also happens when I click Credits.
- When I click Exit (it doesn't matter if I'm using SFall DX9 mode or not) the image fades to black and then the system freezes there. This doesn't always happens, but does so most of the times.
- SFall mentions the use of a global.fx file which is not provided by Sfall or Hi-Res... although I found it on the fallout wikia... what gives? Nothing seemed to change when I placed it in the Fallout game dir.

My config:
windows XP SP3
Fallout 2 UK version
killap's unofficial patch 1.02.27.3
F2_HiRes_Patch_v2.3

-The hi-res patch and sfall(by Timeslip) are 2 separate mods. For conveniences sake I added to the hi-res patch the ability to change some of sfalls graphics settings via the in-game menu, as the two work well together under certain circumstances.
Sfall is good for scaling the game to a higher res and for playing in a window. When used with the hi-res patch, if the hi-res patch makes things seem to small you can reduces the res a bit and then use sfall to scale the result up to your desktop res.
-Both mods will put some extra strain on your system, more so if used together. Turning on "GPU Blitting" on the sfall side can help with slowness problems as well as reducing the res on the hi-res side, if all else fails just use one or the other.
-Don't know about the crash on exit, does it happen without the hi-res patch enabled?
-If the "global.fx" is the one I'm thinking of the effects are rather subtle and I believe it is also made with a res of 640x480 in mind.

I should have added more info to my system:
I have a Core 2 6420 @ 2.13GHz, but I'm also running the game in a win XP SP3 VMware machine with "Accelerate 3D graphics" enabled.
My VM is using 1024x768 and I also tried it with "GPU Blitting" on.
I have run ToEE (a more recent game) in that VM without problems.

Yes, I'm just using the Hi-Res patch and it works great. I just don't know if I'm missing "image quality" by not using Sfall... DX9, shader mode, texture filters, GPU Blitting, 32 bits talking heads...

About the crash, it seems it only happens under certain situations:
- if I try to start a new game (create a character and cancel and go back to the main menu)
- if I start a new game and then quit
- if I load a game and then quit
If I start fallout2.exe and just stay in the menus (options, credits) and then click exit, it terminates nicely
About your question, I made a new vanilla install with just the official 1.2 patch: and it also crashed...
So it seems the problem is not random as I thought, but instead if I enter a certain menu (which probably makes some directx call that screws things in XP SP3).

EDIT: I'm knitpicking here, but would it be possible to add an option similar to MOVIE_SIZE=0 but for the loading screens? Kind of a "fill the screen with a black screen, downscale the pic if necessary, center the pic".
BTW this may interest you, Pixote made some hi-res pics for both FO1 and FO2 main menus to work with your mod, posted here.

EDIT2: about the exit crash I'm having, now I know it doesn't has anything to do with Hi-Res or Sfall, but since you hacked fallout and made the Hi-Res patch, you can probably advice me on this.
It has been a while since I debugged anything on windows, but if you have any suggestion on which tool to use (ollydebug?) and where to look at (which functions?), I can give it a try to see if I can fix this.
