J.E. Sawyer on the Legion and post-endgame play

That is not what I mean. Again. Is vegas inherently the better game because they try to go for an "epic" storytelling/battle? Or could they have achieved the same great story if they concentrated more on working with the engine offering you something that looks and feels better in the execution.

Well, I thought the "epic" battle was handled decent considering the horrible engine they used. Yes some areas did feel lifeless, like the Strip, but it was still more convincing than Fallout 3. It was obvious that the game needed a little more polish. I would have loved if they worked on it for 6 more months.

The problem with using a lot more NPC's is that the game will crash more often. The game reaches the fucking 2GB limit quick (4GB with the extender) and freezes up. They really need to fix that. I am tired of seeing wars that are fought between 10 people.

I personally never felt like the endbattle will be epic. Or lets say, I never expected that in the first place. No idea if that's because of how the game handles it or because I know that it wouldn't be possible in that engine anyway.

The end battle has multiple layers to it, when you are in the Independent or House paths you are basically sneaking up behind the battle, covered by the Securitrons and the soldiers being bussy defending the Dam from the Legion in the Parts you don't access during those paths, it only becomes an "epic" battle in the NCR and Legion paths, admitedly this are the ones that suffer from the limitations of the engine harder, but you still have lots of options in them, and of course, there are attacks ocurring all over Vegas when the Dam Battle breaks out, NCR Emergencya Broadcast lets you hear about the concecuences of your actions during the Battle, you can hear about the fall of Forlom Hope, or it's successfull defense, Camp Golf fallign to the Legion or the newly reinvigorated army fighting them off, or one of my Favorite moments, hearing the guy on the radio talkign about the Omerthas blowing up the NCR embassy.

yeah well. I do agree that I am somewhat nitpicking here.

Thing is ... if Bethesda would not have forced them to use the shit engine from F3/Oblivion ... I mean I HATE that engine so much as everything looks so ugly inside it. From the animations to the textures, faces ... sure much of it can be moded but when ever I played Vegas I never could forget how damn glitchy the whole thing is.

For me, it was hard to look over the lifeless strip or the silly end fight when the whole engine looks and feels like crap. Ah ... one can only imagine what Obsidian would have done if they had more time and more resources for the project.

Is the word "Silly" the catch all term for not having a solid observation around here or something?

Nah that is just silly.

They had what, like 18 months to make the game? Even with working engine and lots of assets, that is an incredibly short time for a game of such scope, especially considering they never made an open world game. They did their best and it was fantastic. A huge shame bethesda did not give them more time. Although it is true the complaints about engine being obsolete would be even louder.

Fixed.

New Vegas sold really well right? Couldn't they always make a DLC for the game that added all of the Legion regions and fixed some of the issues? I know some people would rage that it's not right to make people pay for patches... but if it makes the game that much more awesome and would make it possible to see it created, I'm not sure they'd be as upset?

Man what i wouldnt give to see a well done mod expand the legion's presence in the game... make them a faction worth supporting.

I think I saw a few like that, try looking for "Caesar Legion overhaul" or "Extended legion", I tried one of these mods... A year ago, and it was quite nice. But it's not adding any quest or anything that makes the legion worth it, it just expands the legion camps and so on.

There is a fairly new Legion mod which Izual mentioned. It looks like it added a shitload of Legion content to the game, but some of it is a bit lame. I believe it is the Legion Overhauled one IIRC.

"bit" offtopic but the way I see it, New vegas was designed as a top down isometric game. Shitty engine for at least that purpose and the lack of time made new vegas good, but unfortunately not great.

Yeah I think they attempted to cram too many locations in the game to compensate for the smaller map size.. Finding all the shacks and caves just to find a magazine or a bottle cap gets pretty old... I mean I understand they put in in to add to the exploring and sandbox style to the game but it would probably have been better to make more faction specific locations and from there have the different quests and interactions. Although I think they did great considering the tight schedule.

I'm starting to think that Fallout 4 will reach more deeply into Legion controlled areas.

After all, an important interview hinted at it being close to the Mojave; and Bethesda looooves its crazy nearfascist military groups....

Given the ability of their writers it would be hilarious to see what they would come up with with an already slightly silly faction like the Legion.

They probably turn them into a flowers loving, people helping humanist group. But to compensate for this, they add a small renegarde legion group, which remains at it's old, original target but is otherwise not used at all in the game.

Thanks for depressing me guys because most likely that will be the truth.

I would start a petition to collect signatures to convince Zenimax to let Obsidian handle Fallout 4 and not Bethesda studios but we all know how effective those things are.

Sometimes its hard to accept that Fallout as I love it is dead.
