Kotaku profiles No Mutants Allowed and hating Fallout 3

I think certain people act that way so the entire community is lumped into one, as if NMA is all one giant entity that thinks the fucking same.

If even one person whose first Fallout game was Fo3, reads the article and decides to go play Fallout 1 and/or 2, then I'm happy they ran it.

One of the things I hate most about the state of modern gaming is this notion that "old games aren't worth playing." If there are any old games that are worth playing (and of course there are), it's Fo1&2. You don't need an enhanced edition, or anything, just go pick it up on Steam or GOG or whatever.

The unfortunate thing is so many of the comments are centered on how old and outdated Fallout 1 and 2 are, and how the community should move on. They say we should support Wasteland 2, like we didn't. It's like this community shouldn't exist in some peoples minds. Almost like it offends them since we don't like what they don't like. We can talk about how developers ruined other franchises that changed the series beyond recognition, but Fallout 3 is like a special nugget that is protected from harm by the masses.

It is a special nugget. A nugget of poo.

The whole thing is a really weird phenomenon.

What would these very same people think if some Developer bought one of their favorite Franchises, completely changed the type of game it was, got reaaaaallllly liberal with their creative license concerning the lore, and didn't even consult the people who originally made the games?

FO3 gets special protection just because its fans are fucking kids. In just the way I can't make myself play 1st person Dungeon crawler SSI games from the 80s anymore, these kids cannot appreciate a game that doesnt have full voice acting and twitch combat.

In a way I get it, but in another way I'm a grouchy old man and I want them off my lawn.

I do understand where some of them are coming from. I can't go back and play the original Wasteland because I don't have the strong nostalgia attached to it, the interface is way too clunky, and it is hard as fuck. The clunky UI is something I can't get over. The rest I can. I was 11 or 12 when I played Fallout 1 and 2. I'm sure most of the massive fans of Fallout 3 were around the same age when they played it. It may be a case of "Get off my lawn." but I can't help but think that way. Fallout 3 is incredibly shallow. The open world is a detriment to the story telling. Bethesda knows that so they pull a Mass Effect with Fallout 4. Well, a KotOR really if you want to be pedantic. The problem is that gimps the story in other ways, since your roleplaying options are limited, the dialog looks stripped down, and the RPG elements further removed.

A nicely balanced read. Amazing that NMA is still going strong in the face of everything, when you think about it.

Nicely done with the quotes, guys!

Of course none :3 we are keeping her warm and comfy for you! No matter how long the body is dead.

NMA is a glowing one in forum format, a special glowing one nonetheless. We were here before the fall anyway ( Well not me unfortunately :silenced:)

Actually I think NMA is some kind of mutant, not some ghoul when I think more about it.

Someone mentioned this in the comments:

Wood-framed buildings haven’t rotted away because the radiation literally sterilizes the environment.

This has actually occurred around Chernobyl.
Chernobyll was a Nuclear Meltdown, not a Nuclear attack. In any case, most people don't even focus so much on the minutia unless we are actively talking about it, the major reasons for dislikng FO3 is the quality of the writtting the linearity of the game despite being open world and the lack of many Fallout staples like the multiple endings for settlements and such.

Didn't like the article, didn't really do a good job a representing the community and made a lot of broad generalizations, almost making it look like we don't like new games in here, they also didn't mention how Fallout New Vegas was actually well received here for the most part.

In all honesty, the idea of NMA being a place where these ideas about game-development can have a home, and building those resources into the community, will produce the best long-term effects.

"This just comes across seriously pathetic. A bunch of whinging crybabies who are mad because their ridiculously niche underground crpg from years ago has been brought up to date for new audiences. Don’t play them then you lil bitches."

"I’m not about to join a poisonous online community devoted to undermining Bethesda’s efforts. This is just tragic."

This has to be a joke, it just HAS to be...

Screw it, reading some of the comments on that page makes me want to facepalm to the point that my face becomes damaged. If anyone thinks these forums are dominant for "Bethesda bashing", I will direct them to the RPGCodex.

Why are you reading the comments on a Kotaku article in the first place?

Like I said the article might have been well intentioned but it did a really poor job at actually representing us, but I guess unless you can pain something in broad strokes it doesn't make for an easily digestible article.

The only thing I can see coming from this article is a bigger swarm of the usual coming November.

The answer to that is simple. I do not often go to Kotaku. Therefore, I do not know what to expect when planning on reading comments.

I'm glad Mr. Winkle got what he came for. It was a fair assessment, from an outsider's perspective. Here's hoping it doesn't attract any missionaries looking to show us the error of our ways.

The best advice I can give people new to this site, and who loved Fallout 3 and Fallout New Vegas, is to play the original games.

If you want to understand from a modern position, the context of the content inside the original Fallout games, you have to let go all of the modern conviences that modern gaming has given this generation.

It will be very difficult at first, and seem tedious and arbitrary. You might feel that the change from a three-dimensional plane into a two-dimensional one a setback.

What I would like to stress at this point is the world itself, as a novel. From the position of the times, the 90's had a different approach to the limitations of hardware and graphical design. All of these limitation were overcome with the written word, and the SPECIAL stats system to invoke the feeling of a WASTELAND. Turning these limitations into strong-suites is how the art of the world came alive.

From this starting point, think of the world in-of-itself. Approach it as if you approached a novel. Get ahold of the original Fallout, Download the appropriate mods http://falloutmods.wikia.com/wiki/Fallout_1_Mods ...and read the game manual.

When you start your first game, the sense of desolation, exploration, and tension will work its magic, and the game will show itself for what it is.

If you need guidance, Per has the best walk-through on the internet. However, it is just his interpretation of the system. It is very correct on a lot of the implementation of skills and game-mechanics, however creating your own character and testing it out in this computer generated hell is the whole concept of what makes the first two games great.

I personally think that the user-interface for Fallout 1-2 are about 2 generations ahead of the original Wasteland. Of course modern cRPG's of this type have improved greatly on some of the design framework by introducing new technology and code, but it is still a relatively modern interface for text and stat based Role-playing, and goes off of a framework that is still used to this day.

I remember liking the signature of a forum user around here years ago and it was something along the lines: Fallout 3 is like a dressed up child whoring on the xbox avenue.
Could somebody point me to the exact phrase? Maybe some of the old forum users might remember/know a source

Edit: Found it! :) Not F3 related but Beth$ involved still

"TES was made an orphan once the Father left, and it's been left with the really creepy uncles that are dressing it up in flashy clothing and hooking it out onto X-Box Avenue. " Roshambo

Going strong? There have been 10 news articles in the last two months - Two months during which a new Fallout game has been announced, and Wasteland 2 has a massive patch incoming. That isn't strong, that's at best a Strength of 2 on the S.P.E.C.I.A.L. scale.

I am not going to bother to read the article, but I it is nice that the community got some exposure, and judging by the comments here a positive one.
