Mass Effect 3 discussion

ME3 endings are broken, that's the right word, but people aren't using it don't know why..

How are they broken? I clearly saw an ending video, then the credits rolled and another short cliffhanger appeared, I had completed the game, I was satisfied. How is that "broken"?

Don`t project your own opinion onto everyone else, not everyone thinks the ending has "issues". Instead of actually discussing the game we are turning around in circles and talk about some superfluous ending stuff. :/

It's been repeatedly explained why Mass Effect 3's ending is broken: it's a complete non-sequitur, disconnected thematically from the rest of the series and completely irrelevant to the story, not to mention it's pretty much the same for every ending, with minor cosmetic differences (shockwave colors).

If you understand that, but disagree, please petition for a "Chief Hypocrite of NMA" user title, because you're the guy who complains most often about games being shallow, but are mysteriously okay with a chep cop out done by Bioware's writers.

Not to mention it's ripped straight from Deus Ex 1. Destroy = dark age, Control = Illuminati, Merge = Helios. Thing is, the DX endings fit with the gme and were really different, with the player getting a glimpse of the outcome depending on his/her choice. No such thing in a trilogy that boasts choice and consequence across three games.

So, I have a question here. Did my war assets amount to... anything? Anything at all? Because I was playing through thinking that they would determine success or failure to varying degrees. I got to the end and... nothing really came of them. Did I miss something?

If you have +5000 EMS, and pick the 'destroy' ending, you get a bonus 2 second vid where you see Shepard's body in some concrete rubble (concrete? On the Citadel? Yea I know.), and see him grasp for air.

TOTALLY WORTH IT

There is 7 endings in 3 ending threads. Your EMS decides which one you get(you need 3000 to get green). But all the endings are the same anyway.

Also, if you take too much time to choose, the Reapers destroy the Crucible and it's game over for you.

But yeah, EMS amounts to pretty much sweet fuck all in the end. Yet another problem with the ending.

A few bits of news regarding this, Forbes notes a few bits about the responses.

In particular, one of Bioware's execs has stepped into the fray, stating that there will be some new "content initiatives" in the future.

I find curious that a media company that has nothing to do with games and other form of arts, is actually one of the few that makes sense in these whole mess that Bioware created.

As for the EMS, I've found disappoiting they don't impact in the battle in London, it would be a great thing having or not some other troops or support by your side.
And if you sided with the Geth you even have a Geth Prime to talk before going to battle!!!

I want one by my side, imagine that. :D

I really hoped we would at least have EMS count on the ground. I understand all the various fleets (not only Council, but also Rachni, Volus, Batarian, Geth, Quarian...) not being shown, but fighting alongside Krogans, Turians and Geth would have been an absolute blast.

Instead we get a few cutscnes with mostly human soldiers, and anyway we end up with just our squad. At least give us a short cutscene of Krogans ripping Husks in half while Geth out-shoot those damn Ravagers.

And yeah, Forbes has shown a lot of attention to the whole issue. They already made 2 more articles about this IIRC. Don't exactly know what made them do it. They certainly are much, much better reads than the BiowEAre defending trash most game ''journalists'' come up with. The absolute worst are IGN, their douchebag-looking writer Colin Moriarty just keep making appearances to diss the fans and took Ray's strictly PR speak as ''Oh woe is Art Itself, them evil minority of fans has vainquished Bioware!!''. I mean, jesus, if anybody in this whole debate is absolutely not neutral, it's the website that has ME3 ads plastered all over it and had one of their top reporters as an in-game character.

You know what saddens me the most about the ending (OK, after the Normandy's utterly nonsensical crash)? It's that Bioware proved, in this very game, that they can do better in terms of player choice and options. The Genophage sub-plot has many possible resolutions, including a path where Mordin lives only available if you made some choices in ME1 and ME2, hell the decision to destroy Mealon's cure or not has a lot of consequences in this storyline, and your interactions with Wrex are different. Peace between the Quarian and Geth can be outright impossible if you didn't do the right things in ME2. They can do it, were willing to do it, and just dropped it in the end, instead we got ''lots of speculation for everyone''...

Dammit. Plus, Ray's response only possibly hints at additional content that will ''clarify'' what we got. So I imagine few things more than expanded dialog options, with maybe an epilogue if we're lucky, without any big changes. Catalyst, Relays blowing up and Normandy crash seem to be here to stay :( .

Bah. Anyway, on to my second playthrough, and well I had almost forgotten how good of a voice actor Jennifer Hale was. I mean, Mark Meer's improved a lot since ME1, but she just blows everybody else out of the water.

^That Forbes article was pretty insightful considering where it came from. IGN and Gamespot be damned! I liked this part the most:

Unfortunately, the common thread I’ve heard from angry fans has been that the entire review process is badly broken; that conflict of interest exists at nearly every big gaming publication due to the relationship between game developers and the magazines and websites that review their games.

I would give ME3 a good rating too if they added me as a NPC in the game! Not really but you get my point. What makes it even more hilarious is now they are going to alter the story because fans don't like it. I wonder what suggestions they are taking into consideration? Are they going to further expand upon a few loose ends? Will they add some kind of Epilogue DLC? Will they piss people off even more? I guess it doesn't matter really. Most people will continue to buy the games they put out anyway. If they make another KOTOR I would be one of them. Even if it sucks.

Don't you wish they could do that with movies though? Go back and make slight changes due to fan feedback. I would go back and remove that little bastard Annie from The Phantom Menace.

I'm at the end (headed to Cerberus HQ) Should I get my effective military strength to 5000 before I finish? Sorry if it's been mentioned before but trying to avoid spoilers. I'm in the 4000s now and if it's not a major deal should I just keep going and watch the end videos later?

meh the smartest move would be really to say here "we are sorry!" and making some new end telling people the part you have seen in the game was shepards indoctrination.

Sheet, things start getting dirty http://social.bioware.com/forum/1/topic/355/index/10496260/7

Short story; fans wanting a new ending initated a charity to Child's Play to increase movement visibility, gathering about 80 000$. Penny Arcade, who owns said charity, shut it down, citing two reasons 1) it was used to promote an agenda other than the charity, 2) the ''objective' was apparently complete, as the Reatke movement ''won'' and 3) after Ray's absolutely non-commital PR spin, some people asked for refunds, thinking they ''had won''.

Now, #3 is despicable, you can't just donate to a charity then decide to take back your money when you feel your goal is acheived. That much is certain.

But reason 1? Come on. Charities are used all the friggin time to promote other agendas, and nobody cares because it just means more money to a (hopefully) good cause. Some developpers (those who do the MO The Secret World are an example) used Child's Play itself to promote their product. PA themselves use it to promote their own site and PAX.

Interestingly, said PAX will feature Bioware, it's where ME3 was officially announced, and it may well be when they present the new ending DLC. Not to mention that PA is vey obviously close-knit with Bioware (Dragon Age 2 promotion anyone).

Sooo yeah, when friggin Penny Arcade starts pulling the conflict of interest card, it leaves me very dubious.

Reason #2 is just disingenuous. Nothing is confirmed yet, besides ay promising ''content initiative'' to be announced in April. Unless PA knows something many other don't, this issue certainly isin't over.

I dunno. Maybe I'm just being a bit too cynical here. But I can't help but see other motives for pulling the plug here.

I can only think that Penny Arcade wants this to end because they supported the ending of the game and Bioware, as you said. Yeah, it's ridicolous.

Also: http://www.destructoid.com/raging-mass-effect-3-fans-do-something-for-charity-223811.phtml

The arrogantly named "Retake Mass Effect" group has decided to offset the public bitching by raising some money for Child's Play, which fans are now cynically using to deflect criticism. I know this because Destructoid's tips line was spammed by emails from Mass Effect fans demanding we write about it for that very purpose.

Well ... here you are. Here's the story "proving" you're not entitled, which you earned by sending us emails implying you were entitled to it.

The group -- which was founded on the principle that Mass Effect 3's ending ruined an entire game series and undid all the fun everyone had -- raised over $26,000 for Child's Play in under 24 hours. It would've been more, but members were too busy seeking a public pat on the head for it.

So here's your post, which you wanted to offset what one tipster called our, "bashing the Mass Effect community through one-sided, poorly researched articles." Hopefully the undeniable positivity in this story will make you all feel better like the precious eggshell princes you are.

Why is Forbes so interested in Mass Effect 3 anyway? :o
