New game, Bioshock.

In a good way fallout ranger. The game had a few twists and turns that I was not really expecting from a first person shooter. It went beyond the storyline expectations for these kind of games. And it went beyond them in a big way. The storyline is better than more than a few movies I have seen. O.o

Even though I agree with the Zero Punctuation review of BioShock, I still think it is an excellent game far exceeding the typical fare on the Xbox 360 or perhaps even PC.

The Zero review even says the game is very good, the only complaint he gives, and I agree with, is the lack of any strong RPG element.

the game was never marketed as an RPG... get over it.

also, Zero Punctuation review is just a joke. he loves the game.

There are quite a few outright laws in there, though. Invisible walls, bodies twitching and boxes flying towards the ceiling when you walk over them?
I don't know which Bioshock that guy played, but it certainly wasn't the same one I played.

That said, Bioshock was a bit of a dissappointment. And I disliked the FPS action, it was much too...chaotic. And yes, I do like a lot of good FPS games.

Also, the quest compass can be turned off.

I experienced physics problems too. The twitching was particularly irritating. Tempted me to shoot dead bodies so that it would stop :P

Very good review and I agree completely.

Most of all it annoyed me that even killing ONE of the Little Sisters resulted in an evil ending.
Stupid me for killing two at the beginning and then saving all the others hoping for the nicey-nice ending.

And there really is absolutely nothing innovative about this game. Not a thing. I watched a little trailer with one of the developers explaining how they saw telekinesis in other games but you couldn't throw objects with it, so they thought they put that in. Wow. Impressive. Too bad it's stolen directly from Half-Life 2's Gravity Gun which wet so many pants as I've heard.

Invisible walls, bodies twitching and boxes flying towards the ceiling when you walk over them?

Didn't see invisible walls or flying boxes either, but I saw twitching bodies. A lot of them. Of course, sometimes shooting them seemed to stop the twitching. Maybe they still had a bit of life in them?
And before you ask again, Sander, I played it on high-details, without DX10 (because I don't have such a video card) and not on the highest resolution, but that wouldn't have anything to do with twitching bodies, would it?

Bioshock was marketed as an RPG/FPS up until a month or so before game release. The change was subtle, but for those who were following the game would notice.

Now BioShock is just a "revolutionary" FPS game. Which is fine, the developers made a mistake or they just embellished the truth a little. Of course the RPG element advertised was never intended to be a full-on world experience like Fallout or the next big BioWare game - I realize that! BioShock was simply going to be a neat hybrid of RPG and FPS like System Shock 2 or Deus Ex. I saw the change from that type of game to a more traditional FPS. Which is what motivated me to start this thread in the first place.

Loves it maybe, but certainly had a few things to gripe about.
I agree with this reviewer that the game is above the typical shooter and is a game with a goodly amount of gaming goodness. That at least we both agree on.

Thinking of getting this for the 360, as it barely works on my computer (and without the shiny-ass graphics). Should I?

Fuck. Yes.

If you use it on your projector, then it will pay you the dividends.

You can read my review for GameBanshee here

I rag on the somewhat hamfisted storyline, the predictable gameplay and silly elements, and being way too easy. Overall, I love it.

Yes, that's what I see in a lot of reviews: almost everything is bad, but the game is good.
What is it that's good about it?

Now, I'm not saying this is a bad game. I don't think it is since I somewhat enjoyed it. But it's far from being a good game. I guess it's good for some casual gameplay, though.
For me it's one of the most forgettable games. Not surprisingly when I found myself talking to someone about it, I only mentioned the water as a good thing. Maybe this is the reason I enjoyed the game: the water.

Helps if you actually read the review, I only picked on a handful of things that were bad, not "almost everything", nor do I exactly call the game good;

Gameplay (50%) - 7.5. A reasonable shooter with some extras thrown in
Graphics (25%) - 9.5 way above par
Sound & Music (15%) - 9.0 excellent
Lasting Value (10%) - 7.5 I've heard of people replaying it so I assumed there was some replay value, and it's pretty enough for it.

So in other words, it's a 7.5 game that is redeemed by its graphics and sound & music (read: atmosphere). And that seems a very reasonable grade to me, hype or no hype.

On a surprising note, my crappy Athlon64 3000+ with a crappy GeForce 6600gt and one gig of RAM plays the game perfectly in DX9 and 1024/768 in high quality. Strange but a pleasant surprise anyway.

Thats very nice to know as my system is practically the same as yours (Athlon64 3200+) and I've had my doubts about Bioshock running smooth and with eye candy on it. Maybe I'll give it a try now.
But there is still this registration thing which puts me off whenever I see something like that, ah well.

The demo runs fine on my 360, but I'm not going to buy it, as it's really too linear. At least not until it's a lot cheaper. Very nice 50's setting and atmosphere though. Reminds me of Fallout.

Did read it, but I wasn't directly talking about your review - more about the phrase I quoted.
Well, I guess it's down to personal opinion. For me, the graphics and the sound didn't save it from mediocrity.

How much RAM does your card have? I've got a 6600 too, but with 128 RAM, and it wasn't perfect at all on 1024*768. The rest seems fine compared to yours. I've got a P4 at 3000Mhz overclocked at 3700 and 1.5Gb of RAM. Of course, I also have AGP and DDR1. Maybe that has something to do too.
