Obsidian CEO Talks Working on Fallout Again

WorstUsernameEver

But best title ever!
Publishing the most interesting tidbits of an interview as news articles before the interview is published is all the rage these days, and even Rock, Paper, Shotgun joined, with this bit from Feargus Urquhart on the chances of working on the Fallout IP again. Feargus seems optimistic on the prospect and cites good relationships with Bethesda, but it doesn't sound like it's anything concrete at this point:
“If I think of going from Fallout 1 to Fallout 2, we tried to associate the two areas somewhat closely,” he explained to RPS. “It wasn’t just ‘Oh, we’re gonna do this 2,000 miles from here.’ So I think if we were to do Fallout: New Vegas 2 – or just a new Fallout – we would probably separate it from what the internal team at Bethesda’s doing. We’d keep it on the West Coast, because we’re West Coast people. They’re East Coast, so it makes sense.”

“And we need an interesting confined area. So I mean, it could be LA. Fallout LA. That could be interesting. It’d probably be The Boneyard, which is from Fallout 1. It could be very different. It could be almost a Walking Dead meets Fallout-like thing because of all the radiation.”

[..]

“We talk to Bethesda all the time,” he said. “And I think the challenge here doesn’t just apply to Bethesda specifically, but to a lot of publishers in general. But basically, what does all the [current] console crap mean? The challenge in this period of time has been, you have this console transition, and it’s strange that they’re still not announced. But that always creates a disruption in the industry. And now you mix in [the emergence of] mobile and F2P stuff, and it’s left a lot of people reeling.”

would love to see the boneyard, but if it is set far in the future, it doesnt make a lot sense, as LA seems to bw quite liberated already.

Yet, i would never say no to such a game from obsidian.

a better engine yeah, and more then just one year to work on it.

Contracts very rarely get better than that in the games industry, and if they do, it's often because the dev signing it is really prestigious and has some clout to get the contract changed that way. Though I'd imagine that, if it ever ever happened, Pete Hines and the Beth PR crew would be even stricter on what the developers are allowed to say.

Bad news.

Obsidian will never have such a free contract from Bethesda, which will give them 5 months to make the game with shitloads of mandatory stuff like using Bethesda's own engine. Thus, if Obsidian gets to make Fallout NV 2, then it will be a bad game.

So yeah, bad news indeed. Let Fallout die already.

You guys are funny. I thought this site was a fallout fan-site, and yet you want fallout to die...? The irony......

Fallout is already dead, the last thing we all did in the past years was having sex with a dead corpse, in case you didn't notice.

I don't know Wasteland and I'm a huge Fallout fan, yet I'm far more excited for Wasteland 2 than for the so-called next episode of the Fallout series.

If your son had no head, 1 limb and was coughing and farting blood every second would you want to keep it alive or let it die? That's the idea.

Jokes aside, I'd play the hell out of Fallout NV2, or Fallout 4: Boneyard or whatever, and if it's on Skyrim's engine it should look and play MUCH better than it's predecessor.

I'm also very very excited for wasteland 2. Its going to be ridiculously awesome, and Age of Decadence, and project eternity, etc etc. I'm as much of an oldschool CRPG gamer (and oldschool gamer) as you can get, and yet I wouldn't say no to a properly balanced fallout 4, or fallout new vegas 2.

Fallout lives on in many different incarnations. Fallout has influenced game design on so many different games that it lives on in many ways.

War never changes but game design sure does. :D

I'd kill for another New Vegas. If that falls under the purview of bad games, so be it.

Hear, hear. New Vegas was awesome, even better than FO2 in my mind (yes, yes heresy I know), so let Obsidian have another go if they can. In their hands, this franchise is far from dead.

Feargus probably knows exactly what kind of (crappy) deal he can get out of Bethesda, so these comments tell me he feels it would still be worth doing another FO game. And if he is, Bethesda would be deranged if they didn't accept (and gave Obsidian more time to finish the game), at least from a pure business standpoint. F:NV sold 5 million copies the first 3 weeks. Together with at least a couple of millions sold since, plus DLC sales, the total take must have been around half a billion dollars! Of which Obsidian got only a pittance. How could anyone say no to that? And if Toddy and Bethesda turns out to be recalcitrant, their owner Zenimax (?) should have sense enough to force them.

I agree with this as well, because Fallout was something, that it cannot be again.
People have discussed this endlessly, "FO3" would be a decent enough game given a new name. Fallout is dead, and should stay dead, unless a really fallouty Fallout-game is made.*

*That includes the concept of its gameplay and look not being a mere accident, as many of the newer generations seem to assume. The FPS approach is not "a fix" it is another genre :D

Beth bought id software, so it's possible that they're finally working on a stable and well-documented engine. If not, then it's a shame.
