She is right Crni that attitude you just preached about is pretty much what is holding you back in life not your mental illness. I know people that were raped their whole life that whine less. Being miserable is just not the way to be. I know a woman that can barely walk due to her leg being filled with metal, and she just had a heart attack, that is more positive about her life.

I think you're missunderstanding my intention here.

Endless growth is not possible. That's simply a fact. We all get older. We have a period were we can make substantial improvements and then you get a point where it simply declines till you die. For some it happens sooner. For some later. But it happens to all of us. And I am not meaning this in a derogatory way. That is also not related to the question if you should seek success - what ever you personaly see as success. I am also not saying that you should simply roll over, wave your hands in the air and say, alright! I give up! Just kill me plz.

But I don't see why we have to talk trash about people that I don't know, do jobs that are often even quite important. Because ... cleaning toilets sucks? My mother did that for more than 40 years being a cleaning lady. As much as I have my issues with her on a personal level, she managed to get the family trough with this. She has no fancy ass education. She never did anything else really but cleaning. Was she less of a human because of that choice? Or that she always worked for a "living wage"?

All I am trying to say is, not all people have the same goals in life. Nor do all people have the same idea about what success is. And it's certainly not always found at the end of your paycheck. And I find it always almost disturbing how often people define themself by how much they "earn" in their jobs or the idea that your goals should always be to reach higher, bigger, better! Why you ask? Who cares?! Just grow god damnit! Flipping burgers for decades is a "student job!". And that in a society that very much depends on the fact that "cheap" labour exists.

The thing is, imagine for a moment if everyone, like literaly everyone, would do that. Could our society be run only by managers? People that seek cushy high paying jobs in offices? No one cleaning floors anymore. No one flipping burgers. No one selling tickets in cinemas. That society would collapse in 5 min. And even if we said, ok let only students do those jobs, the number of students couldn't even begin to fill those vacant positions.

If someone decides that success is to get as high as possible on the career lader? Awesome! Go for it. You want to become an engineer? Shift manager? That's great. But that's not everyones goal out there. And those that don't chose this kind of success in life, should't be chastised or stigmatised. That's at least my opinion.

I swear this shit is not good. Why is this suddenly about me for fucks sake?

None of you know me. Or what's going on in my head. And it would be nice if you would leave this out of the conversation. I am not holding your personal beliefs or ideas against you either and turning this into a vulnerability. Fuck. This is really not doing any good.

Why do you seem to see growth and recovery as an affront? Why are you preaching that people can’t move out of their station in life, and shouldn’t even try? “Accept your lot in life! You are your mental illness!” Is it because it hurts? Because recovery involves a lot of pain that people should just ignore? Ignoring the pain will only make you miss out on great rewards. I think it’s rather narcissistic and dangerous of you to say such things. Next time you feel the need to say that people are their mental illness, that there is no room for recovery and growth, how about you keep it to yourself and have the discussion in your mind why you think that way. No, truly take personal inventory.

I’m not even talking about jobs.

    Have a good night.

I am not seeing it as an anfront. It's merely not realistic to expect it at all times.

It's like lifting weights. There is a "peak" that you reach with your performance and from there it's a steady drop. That does not mean that you should stop working out or that working out makes no sense. And the same is true for almost any kind of aquired skill.

This is why I feel that we're having a missunderstanding here or something.

What I do not agree with is to limit "growth" or the idea of it to just something like someone flipping burgers for 40 years and thinking worse of them because they never decided to move out of it.

But I was. Because this is what we talked about for a few pages. Sorry if I didn't made that more clear.

Fair to whom? If the employer can't afford it, the job goes away—even if they have to do it themselves. Why would a theater owner (who is willing to hire a teenager to clip tickets) be mandated to pay them enough to maintain a home and automobile for it? It's not worth it to them (or to anyone sensible).

Consider a manufacturer of novelties. They pay someone to assemble and paint a thing that sells for $2. Say that this person can complete seven of the items in one hour. Then the job is not worth $15 an hour; it's not worth that if they could finish twenty of them in an hour. Yet the employer is willing to pay $6 per hour to whomever wants the job... or there is no job; they outsource it overseas.

You know there is a flipside to this, it's akin to the customer choosing the contractor they wish to buy from whose price they deem reasonable. In the above, it is the employer who is the customer, and they decide what they can afford to pay for a service—or they don't buy it. Why should they be forced to pay a price well above what they value for the service?

There is this pervasive insanity that employers exist to hire people; they exist to get their tasks completed, and they hire employees (as needed) if it will help them do it. It doesn't help them if the employees bleed them dry—or even merely below their preferred profit margin. If they cannot get what they want out of the business, then the business itself stops being worth it to them.

One of the things I will never stop appreciating, is the luck of being born in Norway, and - after lots of struggle - attaining disability benefits.
I never had to monetize my passions, never had to turn what-i-love into a mill. I see friends selling their talent, having their hobby and passion turn into intensive deadlines, having to mass-produce instead of grow, having to follow lists of comissions instead of let their inspiration wander. My very artistic uncle produces troll-themed cups and plates for tourist-shops here, and he says it is absolutely soul-killing - but pays the bills.
I know I am spoiled in this regard, and I cannot be more grateful.

Yeah pretty much. As zegh said, no ethical consumption when everyone's a lunatic asshole anyway.

My issue is the virtue signaling that people portray about such things then proceed to eat at many other despicable restaurants. Ever eaten at Waffle House? Holy shit dude, they're fucking awful. So awful that the US gov uses them as a disaster scale. Waffle House wants to be open nonstop and through anything if slightly possible. They deploy food trucks to locations in disasters to keep selling food. I'd lose that job eventually. Making hashbrowns for a few bucks over minimum wage ain't worth it.

Just eat the food and leave other people alone.
