Because people think that just because Bethesda is the developer that makes opera-world games, that excuses them from all criticism.
I mean, it's dumb.
It's not Bethesda is your friend.
You like a product they make.
That's not a friendship.
You're a consumer.
They're a supplier.
If you don't keep tabs and demand better, they have no incentive to supply a quality product.
This is why Gearbox can shuffle off development of Colonial Marines to another studio and nobody really paid any attention until "whoops, we're sorry!"
I get that the games journalism industry is an enthusiast press and so they're beholden to publishers for review copies.
But Goddamn, why is it that they only ever criticize things months or years after release?
Because "gamers" don't want to hear it.
They don't want thoughtful commentary or excoriating bad practices unless it's something they just don't like personally.
Then they complain that they've been tricked or that "Hollywoodization" is ruining video games.
Nope.
They're ruining games.
You want games to be treated as art, you put up with criticism, demand better of developers and stop buying into the idea that video games as a whole can be ruined by asking for the previous.
I don't think this should be a difficult concept to grasp.
