PERKS: THE POSTER REVEALED.

They're perk trees.

Well, more like Perk ladders.

So yes.

They are counting each rung on the ladder as a perk.

Hadn't they said somewhere that there were going to be like 500 perks or something?

I'm pretty sure that each one of those vault boys opens up a mini perk tree with 5 perks in it or something. If it is just a ladder with no complexity or depth like this it is going to suck way too much.

There are 70 "base" perks, one for each level of your respective level in the SPECIAL category. If you have 3 in Strength, you get access to the first 3 perks in Strength when you level up. Some perks have multiple levels, some only one level. Magazines apparently have their own perks associated with them, and you can "level" some of them by collecting the series of magazines.

Sounds like it's going to be strictly linear, can't really even be called trees. Ouch...

Well, despite it being Bethesda, their marketing campaign for the SPECIAL stats is good, besides the fact that pre-war people wouldnt know as much as it portrays in the films about post-war wasteland.

Are you sure? I mean like REALLY sure that it's esaggerating?

Good thing the internet never forgets.

I wonder if "town" building consists of four houses and a town hall, since as we know a city in a Bethesda is six houses and a mayor hall.

Apparently they had to scrap some of the stuff like the NPC's dog stuff because it conflicted with the game engine and as such had to be removed thus they weren't outright lying. I don't think having to scrap something because of technical issues is equal to intentionally scrapping something just to give a good impression.

"Conflicted with the game engine"?

It's more than likely what all companies who promise the sky on E3 presentations do, they did a vertical slice demo where they pre-scripted all "mechanics" to woo the press. Just like with that Aliens game recently, Bethesda gets away with it for some reason.

Because people think that just because Bethesda is the developer that makes opera-world games, that excuses them from all criticism.

I mean, it's dumb.

It's not Bethesda is your friend.

You like a product they make.

That's not a friendship.

You're a consumer.

They're a supplier.

If you don't keep tabs and demand better, they have no incentive to supply a quality product.

This is why Gearbox can shuffle off development of Colonial Marines to another studio and nobody really paid any attention until "whoops, we're sorry!"

I get that the games journalism industry is an enthusiast press and so they're beholden to publishers for review copies.

But Goddamn, why is it that they only ever criticize things months or years after release?

Because "gamers" don't want to hear it.

They don't want thoughtful commentary or excoriating bad practices unless it's something they just don't like personally.

Then they complain that they've been tricked or that "Hollywoodization" is ruining video games.

Nope.

They're ruining games.

You want games to be treated as art, you put up with criticism, demand better of developers and stop buying into the idea that video games as a whole can be ruined by asking for the previous.

I don't think this should be a difficult concept to grasp.

OK. You mean more like nothing of what was shown in the video actually made it into the game ... neither the conversation, the way how radiant AI works, not even the visuals - everything downgraded.

Would you buy your car under the same conditions? Your house? Toys for your children?

Oh. Sorry! We heard your 5 year old boy chocked to death on one of our toys. Well we recently changed the describtion from 5+ to 10+ years, because apparantly a lot of children chocked to death on it. Didn't happen in any of our presentations though!

I know that I am coming of as rather ignorant right now and yeah it is a silly comparision, but I hope you still get the point. Of course they are not outright lying, of course they are not beeing malovent here. But there is waaaaaaaaaaaaaay to much shit happening like that in video games, and video gamers are really a very special bunch when it comes to that. I am pretty sure that they knew already relatively early in development that the Radiant AI like shown above would not work. But it generates salles and buzz. Beth learned a lot from it though. Instead of showing stuff that isnt there they now show almost nothing - see F4.

Much of what happens in gaming is ruined by exactly what furioso described.
