Skyrim Remastered

Hmmm... Fo4 ha better ai pathing and smoother combat. Maybe that will make it into the remaster. Of course enemies will start walking off cliffs insteead of rooftops.

So is the Skyrim "remaster" just Skyrim on the High Quality graphics setting? Because that's what it looks like from that video...
That, and basically a built-in ENB. They added the volumetric fogs and the godrays though. It's nice, but it risks to turn REALLY heavy on the vRAM. We'll see. Godrays and forests, that's usually a bad combinations for whose who only have a decent computer. I hope they'll can disable them, if needs be.

If Bethesda wanted mods to be available to Skyrim on console, why didn't they just leave it at that?

They are reinforcing the stupid stereotype that games need new graphics every 5 years by selling this Graphically identical version. I hope they know that by reinforcing this "Better Visuals = Better Game" nonsense, they are making people think great games are old and obsolete, and therefore brutally murdering gaming.
How is it any different than what CDPR does with the Witcher enhanced editions? It's also a free upgrade for people who own the game on Steam. Console players have to pay through the nose, but that's nothing new for them. They pay to play online P2P for heavens sake.

What amazes me is that people will actually buy this. Hell, I know some who will buy it despite not having sold their old version/console.

Fuck

EDIT: Amazes is not the word I'm looking for, since I was expecting it. Still...

So given the choice between working on new games and DLC, or making the quick and lazy cash grab, Bethesda picks the quick and lazy cash grab. What a shocker.

At least no one can accuse them of underestimating the intelligence of their new console fanbase.

All those Elder Scrolls modders that make Skywind and update every Elder Scrolls game to the new graphics and gameplay - we need that for New Vegas. That would be a true "remaster."

Actually the first The Witcher game was never released on consoles IIRC, the second The Witcher got the enhanced version free for both console and PC owners of the original game and there is no Enhanced version of the third game yet.

Also this is what the First game Enhanced version added:
  • Over 200 new animations
  • Additional NPC models and recoloring of generic NPC models as well as monsters
  • Vastly expanded and corrected dialogues in translated versions
  • Improved stability
  • Redesigned inventory system
  • Load times reduced by roughly 80%.
  • All bugs are said to be fixed
  • The game manual completely overhauled
  • Two new adventures available to play through: Side Effects and The Price of Neutrality
  • A new option is to mix and match ten different languages of voice and subtitles. For instance, players can now choose to play the game with Polish voices and English subtitles. Other featured languages are Russian, Italian, French, Spanish, German, Czech, Hungarian and Chinese
  • According to CD Projekt co-founder Michal Kicinski, the Enhanced Edition required a $1 million investment
This is what the second game Enhanced Edition adds:
  • Added over 10GB of new content
  • New tutorial
  • 4 more hours of quests (the most notable are Lilies and Vipers and The Secrets of Loc Muinne)
  • Arena mode
  • New cut-scenes and cinematics
  • Over 100 improvements (fixes to gameplay and the interface)
  • 36 minutes of cinematics including:
    • New intro and outro CG movies were added
  • Dandelion's narrations after each chapter
  • All existing owners of the game received the upgrade for free
All of this was made for the same console versions as the original game, so they were also constrained by the hardware limitations.

This is what the announced Skyrim Remaster version adds (but lets be honest, they might be adding more stuff, just not mentioning it in the trailer):
  • Volumetric God Rays
  • Dynamic DoF
  • Screen-Space Reflections
  • New Snow Shaders
  • New Water Shaders
  • Mods for consoles
That is all... I wouldn't call it a Remaster, I would call it a beautification project, the only actual non graphical change is mods for consoles, no mention of bug fixes, added content, improved gameplay, anything at all. It is just a make Skyrim pretty version with mod support for consoles, and you have to buy it if you already own it on an older gen console.

Also another difference between The Witcher Enhanced versions and this Skyrim Remastered is that to get it for free we have to own the base game and all the expansions, The Witcher Enhanced versions allow you to get the enhanced version just for the base game in case you don't own any expansion or the base game + any expansion you own, you do not have to own the entire package.

So it's Skyrim with less shitty graphics?

I thought they already fell of cliffs from my experience?
Fallout 4 still had the braindead AI when it came to the broken stealth mechanics too. *Gets shot in the eye* "Welp just my imagination!".

Didn't the EE of The Witcher 2 also offer a new difficulty setting?

But yeah, comparing what we've seen of the Skyrim Remaster to CDPR's remasters is laughable. Granted, they may not have revealed everything yet. But to me it looks like they simply want to make mods work on Skyrim for consoles, and they know they'll sell a shit-ton of copies in doing so. They just need to spice up the graphics a bit to get away with it. The only reason pc players will get the upgrade for free is because they know of all the graphical improvements available through mods, and they realize no sane person would purchase the game again on pc. Whereas CDPR come across as genuinely wanting to improve their games and listen to player feedback, and provide their players with the improvements for free.

So instead of stealing ideas from mods, Bethesda decided to sell an ENB. Good for them.
It looks more like they're selling mod access to console users; the ENB is just bolted on to make the $60 outlay for the same game they already own slightly more palatable. No doubt Bethesda will still sell millions of copies.

Activision's been coasting for years with CoD, slapping a fresh coat of paint on the same game every year, maybe tossing in a couple of new weapons, and selling it for full price as a brand new release. Looks like Bethesda's going to give that a try themselves.

I might give the game a spin again if they remaster the gameplay and systems along with the graphics. There was potential for quite a lot of stuff that was never used (like terrain specific temperature effects for different races for just one example).

nah, the most importan thing is 64-bit Exe support and more than 4gb of memory. so expect lots of prettier skywind

They've never done anything like this before, so I guess we'll see what they do. Still, knowing Bethesda, I wouldn't get my hopes up too much.

Don't care about graphics. And tell you the truth, Skywind seems to just move Morrowind into Skyrim engine abandoning the gameplay and systems which, as far as I am concerned, makes it a completely useless mod.

Oh, I have no expectations at all. Just saying it'd be an inclination to give it another shot if it was more (in a substantial way) than just a prettier paint.

Here's a comparison from Eurogamer.

Half or more of those comparisons look better in the original, imo. The remastered stuff looks exactly like your typical over-the-top enb that is mostly used for pretty screenshots. That depth-of-field, for example, is annoying as fuck. I don't mind such effects, but in the end I want sharp and clear graphics when I play a game like this.

I tried making Skyrim prettier with enb's once. Yes, it was prettier. But in order to actually be able to play the game properly, I just went back to the original graphics.

I don't think it looks quite as intense as an ENB. I'm waiting for a direct feed video of the trailer so I can do a fair comparison.
