The Guns and Ammo Thread

Yea, and I need it like I need another hole in the head...

Going to another gunshow this weekend where I have reserved a table - again.

Taking about 8 firearms to sell and a bunch of stuff that has accumulated in the parts drawers.

Me and a friend set up some tables at a gunshow today.

There is a dealer there who wanted $800 each for a pair of Century Arms CETMES....

Everything else there falls into the category of classic/collectable arms. Pretty cool stuff.
My fav. so far is a M1911 in .455 webley.

I'm going to the show in Hattiesburg, MS and possibly the Jackson show the following week - depending on how things go.

Hopefully there will be some christmas shopping getting done.

What show were you at?

$850.00 is my final offer!

I love that shit! We don't see much of that at these smaller shows.

The big show for the area is the Birmingham Civic Center Show, which is put on by the local firearms historical society. About 1100 tables with a couple of hundred being displays for the annual competition.

You really need two days to see it all, and there are also tables sponsored by some of the manufacturers like Ruger and Colt. Haven't been in a long time.

Have fun, I know I will.

$875.00 and not a penny more!

Gunshow Report:

Ok.. this show was pretty amazing. There were zero dealers selling new stuff/stock. The whole show was older arms of some time.
The one Mini-14 I saw was 20+ years old and had some really obscure A-Team style aftermarket stuff on it.

There were tons of old rifles. There was a guy with a dozen Henry rifles... in the $35k range.

Another guy had a number of tables with only Pancho Villa guns on it (including papers from colt and signed affidavits etc.)

A luger guy had some really nice examples of every type and a Bochardt.

I ended up buying a Chinese TKK .22 Mauser trainer.

DB and Johnny, neither of you gentlemen would enjoy life in the gun-tight UK  Reading (and seeing) your posts here makes me really want to move to a more firearm-liberal nation.

I come from a pretty gun-centric family, my step dad especially likes his firing pieces and used to shoot/hunt with various clubs. That was before my time though, in recent years he's moved to specialise in what he truly loves: antique firearms.

Being dragged up by a chap with a firearms certificate and black powder licence (and living in a rural area) has allowed me to shoot more than probably 90% of British lads my age. Aside from 12/16/20 gauge shotguns though, the most modern gun i've had frequent access to is a Civil War 1853 Enfield

Acquiring the sort of high-power modern rifles on display in this thread is virtually impossible over here, unless your occupation specifically requires it or you're rich, well connected, and/or a long standing member of a club.

Still, going small game hunting with my mates and their 12 gauges is something I appreciate, given how few of my generation have ever shot anything more potent than an air rifle

I'm not the forum's most timely responder because I am in and out a lot for my job. I appreciate your commentary, and it sounds like you've had a fair bit of exposure to firearms from a young age. I didn't really get any exposure to them until I joined the US Navy.

I've run into a fair number of folks from your fine country who have displayed remarkable ingenuity in adapting AR15s into 'bolt action' rifles to be in compliance with your laws. I also hosted a gentleman from London a few years back, who came over here specifically to do some shooting.

Your country may have restrictive gun laws, mediocre cuisine, and a peculiar love of redundant vowels, but you also gave us Doctor Who, and your enlisted sailors get beer rations. My country has much to envy. :D

One of my secret desires is to buy a Ruger AC556 or Mini-14 GB with side-folding metal stock, and an 80's Corvette, and relive the A-Team fantasy of my youth.

Gunshow report from the seller's side of the table:

Had a great show. One word of advice to anybody entertaining the idea of buying, selling, or trading a firearm. Know your current market values!

In part, I did well because I try to keep up to date on what is selling for how much. The internet is just a google search away, for situations where you aren't sure but have a ball park idea.

Another useful aspect for me, is that I've known a lot of these dealers at the shows for years and bought, traded and sold with most of them at one time or another. Just by paying attention to their conversations, you'll get a good idea of what is trending hot in the market.

I made some really good trades that I was able to turn around for cash and a straight out purchase or two that I was able to double my return on. Of course, most of what I sold were things from my collection that I bought low at the right time and now was the time to sell high. Part of the fun of collecting for me is the bartering, dickering, and haggling.

The first day was very heavy traffic, with lots of lookers and plenty of buyers - much better than the last show's turnout. Today was much slower, being a sunday in a small southern town. Fewer folks, but it seemed like a higher percentage of buyers in this crowd.

Made great money, pretty pleased with my return on investment. More excited about the couple of trades I made. One for a Ruger SR1911 - which is just one very pretty gun and the second being an upgrade to my standard carry sidearm. I traded for a Para Ordnance P14-45 in stainless to replace the model I've been carrying since 1997.

Might get another table week after next in Jackson, MS - a much bigger town with some real good size crowds...

I agree with "know the market value" before you go to a show.

Its sad watching someone try to get $1300 for a Romanian PSL even if it was a very early import from INTRAC... its still not worth much more than $700

Just thinking about other things I saw...

Several Evans Rifles (lever action with Helical/screw type magazine in the stock). I was aware of this gun, but had not seen one in person before. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Evans_Repeating_Rifle

other interesting firearms:
Savage Revolver in .44 from the civil war
90-100% silver plated and engraved Walker with papers...
Colt Double action new frontier... it has a mix of features and definitely shows how colt transitioned from the peacemaker to their double action revolvers with swing out cylinders.

There were tons of M1 carbines of all types (from $350-$3000), numbers of Garands, several K/G43s, a G41, lots of 03A3 springfields, Nagants, Swiss rifles, and some Japanese Arisakas.

One "displayer" had a dozen or so Japanese pistols.

There was a display table of more than a dozen M1911s as well as earlier colt automatic pistols in .38.

Willis, you are making me want to plan on attending the Birmingham Collectors Show - been too long since I've gone to a really big show.

Im just sad that winter has set in and I wont be shooting until spring.... I also have to pick up a new scope for that .22. I got a neat side scope mount with it (the scope mount looks like a soviet PU or Nagant mount). it is a unique mount, so I will have to find a scope that will fit (2-4x and short) but it will be fun. Now to find a couple more mags for it.

I disassembled and cleaned 30 of my HK mags... the aluminum is really thin.
Most of the magazines date from the 1960s-1980s and are aluminum. I only have one steel mag.

4 of the aluminum mags were dented. I was able to pound/bent them back into working shape.

If anyone else plans on getting a HK91 or copy, I would recommend jumping on any chance to get a number of mags. I have not tried Thermold plastic mags. I may get one to see how it works. I do have a few steel CETME mags (30 or so). I have not tried them in an HK yet, but I have heard they will work.

Why so many magazines dude?

How about "I store my ammo in small metal boxes rather than in the cardboard ones the cartridges come in"

I dont think 61 HK mags plus a bunch of CETME mags is too much.

I have 300 or so AK-47 mags (steel) a bunch of bulgarian Waffle mags...

100+ AK-74 mags

120 FAL mags (metric). I may someday want to own a FAL.
