The Guns and Ammo Thread

Took clercqer and his wifey shooting today. I think it won't be long before we have another gun nut on the forum. :wiggle:

They tried out the .22LR Taurus Tracker, .22LR Beretta 87 Target, .357Mag MR-73, 9x19mm Sig Sauer X-Five AL and the 5.56x45mm SAN SwissArms Sig 551 SB.
Even though he shot his fair share of magnum rounds, at the end he was still shooting damn admirably with the X-Five. We just might have a natural on our hands if it wasn't pure beginner's luck.

Most popular gun of the day for both novices:

I wanted to buy a Glock, but there's a wait. I can't afford to put that kind of cash up when it's not even a sure thing. Not a felon, but shit. I'll just buy mine hot from a friend I know.

Dare I ask why you think it wouldn't be a sure thing? Typically all background checks happen at the counter prior to the sale. If you can fill this form out honestly typically you shouldn't have a problem.

Indeed, yesterday I tackled two firsts in one go: first time meeting an NMA'er and first time at the shooting gallery. I had a lot of fun. SuAside is a super stand-up guy and a great instructor. We both quickly felt completely at ease around him. Even the gallery's own people had nothing but the highest praise for him.

All guns were a blast to shoot. Especially the magnum... ;)
I liked the 9 mm best as it didn't feel as unwieldy as the heavier revolvers while having more of a kick than the Beretta.
The rifle was a lot of fun too. It's something completely different but I liked shooting it a lot. Looked awesome too.

As to becoming a gun nut, I think people are born that way. It's just waiting to come out. :)
I'm very happy that I was able to bring my girl as she was not quite on board when I mentioned my fascination for firearms. Now she was able to let the prejudices behind her and see that the equation does not have to be guns = violence and that it can just be a hobby. I don't think she's interested in getting her licence or anything, but at least she has a more realistic view on the matter and she had a lot of fun.

So thanks again SuA, we both had a great afternoon. To be continued for sure: we'll need to find out if it was beginner's luck, right? ;)

Back in town for a short while, accomplished a few firearm related tasks. Nothing particularly new, but I did get around to finishing a few things. I got a couple Aimpoint Micros which I finally mounted:

Mostly finalized my comp gun configurations. Still on the fence about the Vltor E-Mod, but otherwise done.

At the moment, that^^ is my favorite AR.

Finished up my KMR and did the wire routing:

And that mostly sums it up.

Welcome back Johnny!

I really like that 9mm carbine.

What other calibers do you have?

Nice setup, Johnny.

As far as firearms news goes, I ordered a left-handed AI AT. It should be going into a production batch scheduled for April. I'm still not sure about what glass to put on it. I'm primarly looking a Steiner (3-15x50 mm MSR) atm, since Nightforce discontinued the scope I was going to pick. Bipod will probably be a Roedale RH50.

In other news, my bank account now hates me.

Can't believe I'm posting in the "Guns & Ammo"-thread, I remember arguing with Dammitboy here.

Anyway, SuAside & co. you guys interested in precision rifles? Probably you are, and shot them, got any favorites? Finnish military is using the Sako TRG - sniper rifle now and it's available for civilians as well. I'm not really a big gun buff but I have an interest in sniper rifles that stems back to my own (mandatory) military service.

TRGs are pretty great, but Accuracy International remains the "standard".
Personally, I also like the Sauer 202 series (so classy)...
But there's many great rifles in that price range.

Of course, if you just want good accuracy at a decent price, you can buy a Tikka T3 Varmint or a Howa and slap it into a good chassis, such as the Roedale RCS II or KRG Whiskey-3.

Both TRG and Tikka are manufactured by SAKO, a Finnish armaments company. I've had a Tikka rifle, not a new one like the T3 Varmint but an older one, it's a quality item. The wood stock is pretty and kind of traditional.

It's interesting how accurate and effective at even long ranges some older rifles can be. I've seen some vids on Youtube of Garands, Springfields, Enfields, Mausers, basically WW 2 and even older weapons being very accurate still. The Garand/M-14 - based system is still in use.

I have been kind of disappointed in Nightforce's new line as well, and they have discontinued a couple scopes that I really liked. On the other hand, there are a lot of new and old manufacturers producing some pretty good glass these days. I've been seeing a lot more Kahles popping up at the distance ranges around here of late. Vortex's higher end Razor HD line has also been showing up a lot. I have a deep and abiding affection for my Schmidt & Bender PMII, but the later production models have been getting mixed reviews, and they are kind of pricey for me to be buying a bunch of them.

I had said that my next bolt gun was going to be an AI AX to keep my older AI AW company, but it hasn't happened as of yet. The new AT guns look like an updated version of my AW, so I am sure you will be very pleased if that is what you go with. Domestically, if I were to recommend a bolt gun in .308 that could serve most folks better than they could shoot it, it would probably be the FN SPR A3. You get a Win 70 short action in a McMillian stock and a decent barrel for under $1500 USD. Which is about what you'd pay by the time you built something similar on a Remington 700 action that was capable of sub MOA out of the box.

Yup, but Tikka is the "budget" brand. Still gets very nice results regardless.
Too bad Beretta now owns both. It's always a loss of national culture when that happens.

Same thing with Browning/Winchester/Miroku being owned by FN-H.

Another insanely cheap option is the Sig Sauer SSG3000 Patrol. The stock isn't all that great, but the rifle itself is basically the normal SSG3000 or STR200. Sometimes they're on sale for very low prices because they're rather unknown. Full of handy features and accurate as hell.

I took a long hard look at many such guns (including Roedale semi-custom rebuilds of Tikka T3s), but in the end, the AI AT is only slightly more expensive and needs no mods. Additional limiting factor was that I needed a lefty bolt action. If not, I might have ended up with an accurized Tikka T3 Varmint in a KRG Whiskey 3 chassis?

I steer clear of Remington 700s nowadays, i've seen too many fuck ups with Remington (Freedom Group). They even manage to totally fail QC on their more upscale models like the 5R.

Oh, didn't actually know that. I don't really follow these things that closely. There was some talk recently of the Finnish Defence Forces looking for a replacement for the RK-62 / -95 assault rifle and one prominent candidate was the ARX - 160 by Beretta. I wonder if there's some scheming going on and Beretta is going to scoop the deal or something. That ARX looks kind of plasticky and boxy to me, might be good though, don't really know.

The ARX-160 has started showing up here in both pistol and rifle form. To me, it looks like someone stuck a helium tank on an AR and inflated it. Why, Italians, why? I may not like the Beretta 92, but it's sexy. The ARX-160, on the other hand, looks like it escaped from Bizarro-world.

I don't have any pictures of it, but today I bought an integrally suppressed 10/22 barrel by Gemtech. So in 6-8 months, I might have a pretty cool looking 10/22 to post. While I was in the shop, I saw they had a relatively uncommon Kimber Eclipse 10mm with the Novaks instead of their Bomar clone target sights. I really do not need another 10mm gun, but it was very pretty, and I feel my Delta Elite could use the company. Perhaps if it is still there by Friday, I will grit my teeth and make the purchase.

I'm no gun nut, but what do you guys think of my mental top 3 of guns?

Purely based on aesthetics.

1- A hunting revolver, fine if you want to hunt elephants or something, impractical for self defense or warfare.
2- Woud have loved to see how the weapon developed, a great concept in my oppinion, perhaps it appeared too early for it's time.
3- A solid rifle, one of the few bullpup designs that actually got it right.

Never owned a firearm, always been issued/trained with, but not owned yet. I do own my own kevlar vest tho. My current service weapon is a Bersa Thunder 9. When I was in the army we had the FN FAL, the Browning HP, and the FN MAG.

I always wanted to shoot a FN FAL. I wasn't too fond of the M16's we were issued. I'm liking my new AR, but the red dot scope is off. I want to get a real scope put on, possibly a Leupold. I would like to use bare sights, but my wife doesn't like to shoot that way.

I may have some pics and videos up in the next few days...

The ARX-160 is "in the lead" for the Finns, no doubt because it would be produced at Sako.

It is weird, but has some nice features, like swapping ejection side within 20 seconds and without spare parts. If that's worth anything on the battlefield that's another discussion though.

It is very pretty indeed, but people often piss on Kimber for using parts that wear quickly. 10mm Auto being especially brutal, what's their reputation in the US?

Largely a gimmick, but it's functional. Interesting mechanical design to say the least. Not a bad target revolver. Due to the lower placement of the barrel and the slightly recoiling action, it has lower felt recoil than a normal revolver in the same caliber.
The internals of this gun looks like Swiss clockwork.
It was doomed from the onset because:
1) The ammo used was not yet up to snuff. The science behind it was still rapidly evolving.
2) The merger of the two germanies into the Germany we know today totally ate up any budget that West-Germany had for this gun. As such, they defaulted back to a cheaper proven gun.

A good bullpup, but it's starting to show its age. It's starting to lack features and the stock trigger is pretty bad.

1- A hunting revolver, fine if you want to hunt elephants or something, impractical for self defense or warfare.
WTF are you talking about. It's not legal to hunt an elephant with this ANYWHERE, because the bullets in this revolver are woefully inadequate for this type of game.
You wouldn't even be allowed to hunt deer with with a .454Casull Unica 6 in most countries...

I'm liking my new AR, but the red dot scope is off.
Can't you adjust it? What kind of red dot is it?
