That is one of the ugliest things I have ever seen...

There are a lot of surviving MP40s all over the world, it's not unusual to see them with militias and partisans.
But the libyan rebels were also found to have looted quite a few G36s from the libyan army, and Heckler&Koch is now looking to find out who sold those rifles to Libya in the first place because there was no permission to export those to Libya.
Didn't they sell a bunch of those to the Saudis? I'd imagine that's how it found its way into the Libyan armories.
Yeah, but the Saudis would need permission to resell those guns to Libya.
Theoretically yes, but it's not like anyone monitors what the Saudis did with them.

If they can get hold of some of those rifles it shouldn't be too hard to figure out how they ended up in Libya, provided they implemented some sort of tracking system before shipping them off to the middle east...

FN-H sold many F2000 + EGLM grenade launchers and FN303 riot control weapons to Libya under special export license as they were to be used for an African Union peace keeping mission in east africa (escorting food convoys).

I would suspect something similar for HK?

Also, people should stop being so naive... At the moment the troubles in Libya began, the SAS was in the country training Libya's anti-terror troops. Hell, Gadaffi issued an arrest warrant for Bin Laden before 9/11 even happened, but no one took him seriously. :)

The fuck are you on about?

(Never played the MGS games so I can't really respond to that without you clarifying)

Libya was one of the main battlefields of Northern Africa in WW2...
Yes, even the Czechoslovak 11th infantry battalion fought there along with Allied forces, defending Tobruk against the Afrika-korps.

The tracking system on guns extends to serial numbers. A big, proper tracking system. would basically require strapping a cellphone to it, and would require charging it regularly.

or nanomachines (like metal gear).

Another suspect would be the Bundesnachrichtendienst (german intelligence agency), who trained Gadaffi's security force.

Saudi wouldn't have sold ANYTHING to Libya in the last 10 years, unless it was done without the Saudi family knowliege, as the Saudi Royal Family HATES gaddafi.

What's the difference between an SMG and an assault rifle? they both seem to fire rapidly so I dunno why people still used SMGs

subguns fire handgun cartridges. They're smaller, more compact, typically have less recoil, make less noise. They're better for room to room combat due to their size and, while it depends on the specific round used, they're less likely to over-penetrate their target.

MP -> SMG -> assault rifle -> battle rifle.

Machine pistol is a pistol sized pistol caliber fully automatic weapon. (9x19, .45ACP, 10mm Auto,...)
Submachinegun is a slightly larger (with the option of having a stock) pistol caliber fully automatic weapon. (9x19, .45ACP, 10mm Auto,...)
An assault rifle is a fully automatic (or burst) rifle that fires intermediate cartridges. (5.56x45, 7.62x39,...)
A battle rifle is a semi or full automatic rifle that fires full sized full power cartridges. (7.62x51/.308Win, .30-06,...)

The odd duck in the pond is the PDW, kinda depends on the source. No fixed definition for it. basically somewhere between SMG & assault rifle.

Edit: There's more of course... LMG, GPMG, HMG,...

After I posted I felt like I oughtta explain it further, thanks for saving me the trouble, Sua.

There's also carbines over various sorts, old school "rifles" which pretty much fit into the category of battle rifles or just flat out rifles, which I'd put to be different from sniper rifles,

Would muskets fit into any of those categories?

The answer to the question; "what would happen if dammitboy won the lottery?"
