The Last of Us 2 - Two cowgirls murdering each other's loved ones

I had a hard time fighting off the negative impressions of all the people that said Death Stranding was boring shit. Even when I was having fun I kept hearing everyone say "boring" in my head while playing it. It was quite annoying especially while having fun. I ended up liking it more than any other game released the past few years. Boring shit.
If Death Stranding was a bit faster and probably easier to understand with super sad drama moments that make you feel a little bad inside I'm sure critics would have raved over it. I haven't played it yet but still want to but I'd imagine it's more of a weird Lynch film than it is a typical sad story that TLOU 2 would present.
Yeah, I should believe those faceless people over Pewdiepie, AvoidingthePuddle, Angry Joe, Critikal or that ex-reviewer who released that video two weeks ago, all of who that disliked TLOU2 immensely and actually played from start to finish.
I only give a shit about people's opinions when they value the same things I do in a piece of work.

All of this fuckin outrage is making me watch the fucking story to this thing. Fuck you people. Thanks youtube. Fuck you Bill Gates.

Ok starting. Ohh..

Irony that Dunkey actually enjoyed TLOU2 quite a bit and fell into the same traps all the reviewers did like thinking Joel dying was the reason everyone's upset.

Why is that irony? The point of that video still stands. I like Dunkey's content for the most part, it's funny, but his reviews no matter how serious or funny they are, are worthless to me in a critical sense. They're a great 5 minutes for me to laugh about something he's going on about. I don't align with his tastes in games 80+% of the time. My point was you brought up other youtubers, who have a track record you can follow and relate to. I don't value games the same as Angry Joe but a bit more than Dunkey it seems. I watch more Dunkey but Joe's reviews would slightly matter more to me when it comes to analysis or opinions on the game. If Dunkey hates a new turn based RPG, well big fucking surprise. If a few of the more niche youtubers I follow hate it? That's when I'm actually interested in a real breakdown of why.

Whereas game magazines have what Dunkey called the lottery. When you read a IGN review, or a GameSpot, or GameInfromer review how often do you even bother looking at who wrote that review? That person writing that review matters way more than the publication does. This is why people like Toronto shouldn't bother with reviews on something like Death Stranding if those same reviewers don't even like the games he likes for similar reasons. Atomkilla and I don't see eye to eye on all games but I quickly noticed he shares a lot of values (at least for games) with me. If I see he's played a game before and I'm thinking of buying it, what he says holds a fuck ton of weight compared to many other people.

A journalist working for a magazine can have value to a person though but it's more rare because so many people don't keep up with who is behind the typewriter. If they do, and they generally agree with the reviewer writing the pieces, then it means a hell of a lot more than me reading a GameInformer review.

Do they kill the protagonist by some weirdo that has tits and a cock? Did Lee from Walking Dead get killed by a tranny?

At the risk of undermining your transphobia, you realize that Abby is a straight cis woman, right? Transgendered women by and large do their best to NOT look butch and tough.

That's Hass' tongue in cheek point. They portray Abby in a manner that is so unflattering that it looks like a botched re-assignment surgery. They want her to be a product of the environment but Ellie and Dina don't look anything like she does.

So where does Abby sit on this spectrum. Who is she supposed to appeal to exactly?

Abby is a soldier with a morally dubious but well supplied militia in a brutal and prolonged guerilla war, she has also spent years obsessing over the killers of her father. Her being muscular is pretty well representative not only of the well-supplied millitarism of the community that she comes from but also of her dedication to her mission of violence (against Joel and against her enemies as a soldier) which has consumed her life in its entirety. Similarly, her not being conventionally attractive is as suited to this role she takes as much as her offish personality. Meanwhile Ellie and Dina are young people in love, living in a society that is focused on community and survivalism rather than war or control.

I say this as a guy who likes Kojima games and enjoys Quiet as a visual design a bit too much, but not every character has to be wank-fuel and Abby's physical appearance is pretty perfectly suited to her as a person and her role in the story. I'd be more interested to hear the argument as to why a character like Abby has to be attractive other than "it sells more copies and makes pp hard"

So... she's not even trans?

As someone who was on /v/ at ground zero of this shitstorm starting, no she's not. It literally started because everyone on /v/ calls any character that's not anime uguu "ugly manfaced tranny" (this also applies to Claire and Jill in the recent RE remakes btw) and they memed it into existence because it's more fun to think that and spam it than to actually talk about the game.

There is a trans character in the game but it's not Abby, and them being trans actually has good relevance to the story.

I don't care enough either way. I just know when media is being presented to the audience with a shallow attempt at pulling on their SJW heart strings. The average person that does not know about the specifics will likely feel the same way. The dudebros that play games like this are not looking to be enlightened by liberal talking points about "transphobia". For the record I feel sorry for people with a mental illness like this. I am not afraid of them. I am afraid they might encourage another child to mutilate their genitals even further than ritualistic penis blood sacrifices already have but aside from that I don't care. Maybe if the game was not about zombies roaming the world (lowbrow dumb shit) I could handle a serious dialog on transgender psychology and lefty circus clowns with daddy issues. As it is the first game seems like it was made by totally different people that had a different purpose in mind. Then for the second one they wanted to stir up shit due to the political climate. Good for them. Now they get a shit review score.

As someone who rolled their eyes upon hearing there was a persecuted trans person in the story, it's actually decently done. The character doesn't really understand that they're supposed to be trans or what trans is, and it is barely brought attention to because yeah in the Last of Us world that's not really going to be something that's at the forefront rather than violence. They get outcasted from their post-apoc religious cult because they felt masculine instead of feminine and decided to shave their head, and didn't want to take the designated role for females that the cult wanted them to. That's about it.

So... she's not even trans?

She was never trans beyond the ND dev that leaked the motivation behind her resembling the incredible hulk (to appeal to the trans community). But even CT Phipps made the case that the trans community wants to look less like someone stuck in the middle.

That's the point of escapism and its true for male characters as they all fit into some type of stereotypical mold - handsome, tough, rogue-ish...you get the picture. For some reason it seems women are the exceptions to this rule and this is the arena some developers are choosing to fight in. If your audience is ResetEra then yeah, you'll probably win points over there.

To be very clear with my point - I am not implying characters need to look like the Edo from Rubicun III.

But don't you find that the escapism argument is kind of bad for video games? Escapsim is 100% valid and I welcome games that revel it and embrace it (as I said in my previous post I love Kojima games and they are pure power fantasy) but I don't see the issue with having games that branch out from escapism as a goal. Movies aren't limited to this, and I don't think video games should be either. You can make the financial argument e.g why attractive hollywood stars are lead actors but that's a seperate argument entirely to quality.

Imagine if you will for a moment a New Vegas that didn't look like it was inhabited by potato people and had the same type of fidelity that Naughty Dog games have, would you not find it out of place or disappointing for all the characters to look like attractive power fantasy people and not a wide range of pretty, ugly, beat-up, worn out, well-presented, clean, dirty etc as suited to the type of character they're portraying?

You need to stop going on /v/ dude. You are not going to find a serious discussions of games on there.

It is unironic stockholm syndrome. I can never leave.

They are serious in their discussion though. The shit they say is retarded but the worst part is that they mean all of it. Hence why half the userbase legitimately believes Abby is trans for example.
