The making of Fallout 4 - Game Informer article

(you should be holding him accountable for breaking the review embargo and releasing his early)

You know it was probably an editorial/publishing mistake right? By now almost all reviews have been completed and now are sitting on a website/Youtube and are waiting to auto publish when the embargo hits.

Those kinds of fans aren't exclusive to Bethesda. The more hardcore subset of fans who seem to view every element of Fallout 4 as perfect are caught up in their hype and imagining that it will fufill their own expectations on account of not having played it. Some months after release, I hope these folks will look back on the game with a more level-headed opinion and admit they were getting caught up in the hype of it.

And I would recommend holding judgement until Monday when the full reviews come out, followed by the game itself before making a statement about the fans on a comments section.

Oh, I know.

I'm planning on picking up a copy myself so I can play the game.

But I'm not going in expecting anything more than a decent open-world shooter.

Vociferous fandoms are hilarious to me and I do love riling them up on occasion, but I'm generally too laid-back to actually get bothered by them most of the time.

It's just this time was particularly infuriating.

A spoiler-free, fair review on a non-gaming website getting inundated with bullshit because they published early and it was a glowing 100/10?

Woowee, that got my blood a boilin'

What is it these days with gamers defending publishers and developers? It's like they forgot that they are the costumer. Very strange, borderline cultish behaviour. This hyping up everything shit has to stop, as these companies are getting shamless in their money schemes with cut content, idiotic dlc and insane prices.

Cultivating tribalistic mindsets in the consumer has been an effective marketing strategy in the video game industry for decades. The whole concept of a "console war" is predicated on it.

I feel though those people do more damage to your development in the long run than any good that might eventually come out of it. I mean criticism, I mean FAIR criticism is extremly important. For any developer. It's like beeing surounded only by yes-man-type of people, every creative process needs some who actually challange you on your work and thoughts. Otherwise you end up with something like Star Wars Episode 1-3, as Lucas got probably rid of any people that questioned him a long time ago.

Here's hoping right. But I can't help but consider another theory; this reviewer was pretty lowkey, not someone who will really be considered as much when the rest of the bigger outlets have their own reviews out. Perhaps this was a small opportunity to be the first to have a review out on a major title before anyone else and reap the brief, but noticeable attention that it would bring.

That's probably not it; more likely this might have been the result of some confusion regarding the emargo lifting, which could have easily been misinterpreted. But I can quite confidently say that if this had come out at the right time alongside all the others, it would not get the same attention it got today.

No idea why the Bethdrones are so angry at this dude, is not like this was like that review that said that Obsidian Phoned the game in because the guy couldn't find the Snowglobes... That review was just completely incompetent.

Review comments spoilered just for size:

I guarantee once other reviews hit and if other reviewers do say similar things regarding Bethesda's total lack of improvement in meaningful narrative, writing, companions, and sensical environments - there will be the same "complaints."

Nothing less than total praise will be acceptable, rather than holding Bethesda's feet to the fire to actually improve.

I find it hilarious that some of those comments on that review are attacking them for not giving it total praise and simply stating the obvious - its a shallow game. People waited 7 years for this, of course they want the wait to be beyond worth it. As an example: I waited years for Rome Total War 2 and I had to admit it turned out to be a mediocre mess of a game that hardly lived up to expectations.

That is a silly thing to say sure, but Variety is not a gaming outlet, and they were reporting on a party. If this was an actual gaming site reporting this, it would be more ignorant, but as it stands, they were most likely interpreting the addition of the first fully voiced female character as something else.

Many Gaming outlets made the same mistake during the initial E3 reporting period. Even Polaris reported on "The new Female character" being now added to Fallout.

Well, the Vault Dweller and the Chosen One are canonically male characters (based on subsequent games). So maybe Bethesda is tipping their hand that the Sole Survivor is canonically the mother, not the father.

By showing only the male survivor in basically all of their footage and trailers?

Only the Vault Dweller is canonically male. The Chosen one is still vague. Also....

The intro basically states that the male character is the canonical one

The male character is always the canonical character because that's just the mindset; there's always been more male players so when there's a choice between male and female, they naturally gravitate towards male.

But it's good at least that the launch trailer puts some emphasis on the female portayal. Hopefully some years down the line it will be announced that a game has both male and female player characters and sites will go "yeah, okay" and then move on.
