The 'MrMattyPlays' Fallout 4 Review "A Near Perfect Game"

She's magical... what she can see the future, what other magic is up her sleeves?

Yeah, I'm thinking she's a "Psyker". There's a few people similar to her in other games but I dislike most of them. Only tolerable one was the Master really.

To me games seem to be on a scale of 7-10/10 because I rarely see anything below that. Even if someone says tons of negative things about it the game will still get a 8/10. I want to know how this game is near perfect because I find it super boring after 64 hours and I haven't even finished the main quest.

I don't remember where, but I read an article about that. Scores below 7.5 are very rare, and it is deliberate. Basically, the bulk of them are bought and paid, and so if they truly hate the game, giving it a 75%+ score is the least they can/are allowed to do.
Don't quote me on it though, but I keep seeing the same thing - and I adapt to it, so when I see 7.5/10 I know it's most likely utter crap.

Yeah agreed. It's surprising how anything lower then 8 is bad.

Might be because the majority of gamers, the casual ones, find it easier to love something than they do to resent or even hate something. If they buy a game and don't like it they may just go "eh, what can ya do about it" and then trade it back. But if they buy a game they really enjoy 'then' they will go out of their way to voice their opinion because they'e like 'really' into it.

Just a theory.

Oh and because of the idiots that think that if they like something then it deserves a 10, a perfect score, meaning that the game is flawless. 10's are just tossed out left and right.

No such as thing as a game that deserves a ten.

Personally, I am rather enjoying the game. I consider it a marked improvement over their previous attempt, mainly in that it feels more confident, if not well written. Essentially, it feels more like their game, rather than a tired trotting out of Black Isle's work. In that sense, I respect the game and what it represents as it is thoroughly Bethesda's vision. It's fractured and askew, much like their modern TES games, but it's less regurgitation. I can dig that, for what it is worth. Also, Nick Valentine has actually become my favorite companion since Marcus. Never expected to say that about any Bethsoft game, let alone their version of Fallout.

The assertion that it is anywhere in the wide, wide universe even near perfection, however, is ludicrous. The engine creaks and groans beneath the weight of the game it shoulders. The dialogue system is downright busted. Choice is, once again, an illusion. NPC's disappear into the void you lost your toenail clippers in. Settlement building adheres to arcane and inscrutable clipping rules that only apply or do not apply when they feel like it. Does this sound like a "near-perfect" game? I would consider Shadow of the Colossus "near perfect". Metal Gear Solid 3. Planescape Torment. The recent Undertale. (Overzealous fanbase aside)

I know that Mr.Matty is the ultimate shill, a man who has hardly seen the cover art for many great games, FO4's forebears included, but that is just mind boggling. I'm loving this game, and for me, it's a giant broken mess with a confused interface and even more confused writing. There is no conceivable value in praising a game to the moon that is broken on a fundamental level, regardless of perceived faults such as its adherence to the originals. I apologize if this comes off as ranty, as I'm still processing my thoughts on the game, but this review just galls me for some reason.

Honestly, the game is shit everywhere. Even as a combat walking sim it's bad, but perhaps that's my opinion? After Farcry 3 my standards on first person shooter combat has risen highly. Damn, even though I dislike the genre the combat is so good.

I thought Far Cry 3 had really good shooting myself even if I found it too easy. I wonder if we'll ever get another isometric Fallout game?

I find that I've had moments where it competes. I find the general beat of combat to be challenging and fun. It's not half as polished as Far Cry's is, (Or even a fraction as daring) but the brutality of the encounters tests my mettle in fun ways. Different strokes for different folks.

It was really easy but the combat was smooth and fluid. Going to cover made sense and with a bit of tweaking needed.

The more I think of Far Cry 3, the more I realize Fallout 4 is a LOT like that game. That would be fine if there was also an RPG in this game, but there is not. There is, however, an MMORPG in Fallout 4 in that there is a multitude of grinding you can do for no reason for hours at a time as though it's a second job.

I always liked the rock throwing to get someone's attention idea from the Far Cry games too. I can't stand the cover system in Fallout 4, sometimes it works other times it doesn't work. Its gotten me killed plenty of times because it feels like a broken or incomplete feature. I prefer the lean feature from the Thief games or any game that features that.

Agreed, way better and it works.

I think the reason the cover system doesn't work in Fallout 4 is due to it being contextual. I mean sure you can't use the "Q" or "E" keys but if it means a better feature then why not?

Also clipping, the enemy usually hit you anyway.

Now that you mention clipping, I can't tell you how many times I've been hit through a solid wall with laser weapons. Why is that?
