The Ultimate Movie Thread of Ultimate Destiny

It looked painfully dated. I don't know if WB skimped on the VFX money, but I felt like I was watching a movie from 10 years ago especially with the fight with Ares. The action part of this action movie was easily the worst element of it. It's one of the only films I've seen in recently where I only enjoyed the second act. The first act was a bit of a slog and the third act completely lost me.

It looked pretty good. Then again your idea of criticism is "it looks like a Zack Snyder film" (it wasn't even directed by him) so I am kinda wasting time indulging you.

Which is a valid criticism. I never said he directed it, but it does follow his visual style specifically during his 300 and Watchmen years. It's fairly clear where Jenkins took her inspirations from. I'll give credit where credit is due, The No Man's Land sequence was great and touched on the subject of war in a way that I felt the first MCU Captain America film should have, but didn't. That doesn't fix the the first and third act or the laughably dated visual effects.

The final battle was pretty weak, but I don't get how the fight in the beach is any bad or dated. It's not Logan but it's pretty good and the Zack Snyder hatewagon is a pretty popular cop out nowadays.

Way too much slow mo is my issue with the beach scene and everything leading up to that scene was a chore to me. I agree the hatewagon for Snyder is a popular cop out, and I don't exactly hate his films. I think Man of Steel is fine, but with the reception of his films and the overtly positive response that this has received, I expected this to be a completely different film. This thing is being heralded as the best DC film since The Dark Knight, but I personally don't think it's any better than Man of Steel. It's definitely an improvement over BvS and Suicide Squad, but it's still got glaring issues. Hopefully they can iron that shit out with the sequel.

I rather have slow mo on well shot scenes than it being another bland action scene where you can't even tell what's happening. Also the begining is pretty good, it stablishes character fast and it still has good action.

Watched the Breakfast Clubbin' Power Rangers...

Holy shit, how are people even saying this movie "isn't so bad"? I mean it's not the worst thing ever but it's just boring and corny in the bad sense. Power rangers was always kooky and silly but this thing decided to go the "dark gritty" route on it's atmosphere while delivering some of the most vanilla whinny suburban teenagers as it's supposed team of "screwups", they were really looking forward to that scene where they say "We are all outcasts you guys" but the problems of this kids are shit like "My family is too normal" "I shared a photo of a friend" "I pulled a prank and it went wrong" "I am autistic", kinda surprised none of them said "I am a non binary vegan, wiccan", these kids are sooooo boring and vanilla. Most of the movie they don't even fight anything in any sort of cool action sequence, just the typical "simulation of monsters" and they don't even transform until the last act. I am glad this shit was a box office failure like all of it's ilk.

Krispy Kreme/10.

Watched John Wick 2. I can dig it. I like how they keep expanding the world of assassins so we get to see more and more about how they operate.

John Wick 2 is one of the rare few sequels which are on the same level, and perhaps even top the original film. Absolutely fantastic.

JW3 is probably the film I'm most excited for in ages.

Guess I'll be checking out John Wick 2 next.
The first was... delightful. Not very good necesarily, not something I'd chase people to recommend, it's even dumb here and there, but still absolutely delightful

oh! and RIP Michael Nyqvist :(

I disagree. I think it did tons for the action movie genre. It was very fucking good. Keanu Reeves is pretty believable in the role too. It is a little dumb in some respects, but a hidden group of assassins hiding in plain sight such as they are is a bit dumb in general I guess. Plus the effects and camera work are on point. Oh and good actors.

Basically just what I said, but with much more enthusiasm... :D
I meant "not very good" compared to all movies of all genres. I wouldn't recommend it to my super intellectual dad. Compared to action movies, then refer to my statement of "absolutely delightful", it's spot on and the pacing is perfect, it really knows what you're there to see, and doesn't muck about before delivering massive doses

And good actors indeed, Michael Nyqvist, the mafia boss, Swedish actor, died just now

John Wick is actually a very smart film. It's not a deep, introspective piece of philosophical cinema art, but is smart in an action movie sense - it is very, very aware of being an action film. Nothing more, nothing less.

What's smart with it (and the sequel) is that they don't try to forcibly and unnecessarily cross genre boundaries and become anything more but an action flick. Instead, the intellect of the films is shown through excelling within confines of the genre - confines which are intentionally imposed.
So instead of trying to be some sort of drama film, or some political B-movie thriller, or a quasi-realistic commentary about the geopolitical situation, or the depiction of harsh underworld of criminals and depravity, John Wick only tries, and absolutely succeeds in being a fantastic, stylish, old-school action film where every single thing within it, from camera work and lighting, to every single character, only serve to tighten the action.

Is it realistic? No. Is it deep? No. Does it try to be anything more than it already is? No. Instead it chooses to be the best at what it already is - non-stop blood-boiling action.

Quote from the first film can explain it very neatly: "John is a man of focus, commitment, sheer will... something you know very little about".
Well, John Wick is a film of focus and commitment, something modern high-budget cinema knows very little about.

I've said it already, and I'll say it again - if JW3 is as good as previous films, then JW trilogy will be hailed as one of the best action films ever made, proudly standing on top next to legends such as Die Hard.

I recently rewatched Come and See (1985) for the second time in about 5 years. It was no less powerful than when I first watched it. If you haven't seen it, then I urge you to watch it. If you have issues with panic attacks, PTSD or anything of the sort, I urge you to not watch the movie. People have been hospitalized after watching the film in theatres.

Just watched Split.
It was pretty entertaining, the set up seemed like a trite torture porn flick but it really took me by surprise and by the end I was just with my mouth agape with some of the developments, the last twist was okay, it's good that M. Night Shyalamadingdong seems to have learned to make a cohesive story first and build the twists to elevate the themes instead of just adding twists for twists sake.

Hedwig/10

Saw Spider-Man Homecoming with the wife. I was initially dreading it because the majority of franchise films make me want to vomit, but it was a solid teen comedy about Spider-Man. It had an interesting villain with an actual motivation, something the MCU movies have been lacking and it was relatively small in scale. This wasn't Spider-Man saves the world, it was Spider-Man tries to take down a weapons dealer and doesn't do a particularly good job at it. It was refreshing.

Tramsformers 5 something-something-big- random-earth-killing-event.
Seriously, does someone still care for the titles? Or do they just randomly choose something that sounds cool and THEN write a story around it? Meh, I can't say that Transformers is like the epidome of movie making, but I think the first and second Transformers movie have been at least entertaining, if all you want was to see robots punching the crap out of each other. But at this point ... it doesn't even have that anymore. Half of the time I didn't even realize which robot punched whom. The whole thing was so erratic. It really shows that they don't give a fuck anymore, I mean in T1 and T2 you had at least some very solid action scenes, where you could easily tell what was happening, good use of slow motion and they at least tried to give a sense of direction. But here? Wait, Optimus is dong what? Oh another robot punch! Hey why is Megaton now talking? What robot is that? Oh, the earth is supposed to get smashed by a planet the size of the moon, but you hardly notice it. Meh.

Wonderwoman.
Oh boy. I put me to sleep. Can't really say more about it. It wasn't bad, but I don't get all the hype. At least they didn't fucked up that female-hero thing. It didn't felt forced or out place. So yeah, that is a pretty positive thing I guess. I actually liked the acting even, and I really would have loved if the movie was much more about WW1, and wonder-woman being well ... wonder-woman, as many said here, the middle of the movie was pretty solid.

Covenant.
What. A. Steaming. Pile. Of. Garbage.
Seriously ... Ridley must be drunk. Like all the damn time. There is no other way to explain this cluster fuck of a movie, from the pacing, the acting, the story, everything is shit. The visuals are ok, even great. But that's pretty much. It's even worse than Prometheus. Really, at some point the whole writing team must have decided, that they just don't care anymore, and treat the movie goers like pigs that eat everything you throw in the trough.
If you like intelligent movies, this will turn you off, if you like good Science Fiction this will give you brain cancer, and if you actually like good Alien movies ... well, better to keep hand guns and knives away, or you might kill your self.

War Machine.
Solid movie about the Afghanistan war, even though I totally feel that Brad Pitt was completely misscast for his role. I am not sure if they tried to actually make a honest, serious movie or a comedy/pardy of sorts. It's not like Jarhead which I think was a pretty intelligent movie, but it really is also not like Inglorious Bastards which was extremly ridiculous. I also think that you will enjoy this movie less, if you watched IB with Pitt. You really have to get someone, who can actually convincingly play the role of a US General or something. But outside of that, it was entertaining.
