The Ultimate Movie Thread of Ultimate Destiny

After spending more than 2 hours watching Apocalypse Now Redux, I am still uncertain what I've seen and what kind of positive change is this from the original.
It's not really a positive change, just a "restoration project" version with all the stuff that didn't make the cut the first time. Like you said, some of the cut material is good, but most of it deserved the chopping block. It would be nice to have a version that added in some of the dumped material judiciously instead of restoring all of it.

I take it you didn't watch the whole thing, since Redux is what? Four-and-a-half hours?

12 Monkeys on tv right now.
That's one of my favorite movies that I tend to forget the most, when trying to remember favorite movies.

What boggled me a bit is the fact that Redux came out in 2001, which is well over 20 years after the original release. By that time, Copolla was certainly aware of the film's influence and importance, it's ups and downs. It's strange to me that he would change the whole pace of the film by a additional material, most of which is just unfitting.

I could just be spoiled though, DVD era bastard, used to deleted scenes extras on my discs and such.

Regardless, it would've been best if he did what you said - added some, not all material.

I've seen it all, but it's around three-and-a-half, actually. To be precise, 202 minutes, according to Wikipedia. Take 10-20 minutes out of it for ending credits, and you get a three-hour journey, meaning I've made a mistake in my previous post.

David Peoples and his wife co-wrote the script for 12 Monkeys. He also co-wrote the script for Blade Runner and wrote the script for Unforgiven. That's some good work.

I wouldn't mind if he was involved with the Blade Runner sequel, but I don't know whether he will be.

Have you seen La Jetee?

Man....New York Times really doesn't like the superhero genre....although I don't understand some of their complaints...

Does anyone get angry that Harry Potter and James Bond are white males? No because they were that way in the original source material...so why are they getting angry that the avengers and other superheroes are white? They do make some of them black like Nick Fury...

Also...sexism? Black Widow got the most screentime in Avengers it seems and she wasn't doing anything "sexist".... yeah she manipulated some baddies by pretending to be the typical weak female in action movies but I thought this was a trope inversion rather than using the trope so isn't it not sexist?

It's just a bunch of pseudo-intellectuals over-analysing super hero movies and giving an opinion that dosen't agree with the majority to get more people to read their articles.

No, wikied it and was quickly intrigued. I'm definitely gonna look for this, thanx :D

I'm going to randomly post in this thread to say Ghost Protocol was an OK action movie, which is to say not too good or memorable, John Carter was a so-so action movie that didn't make any sense, which is to say not too good or memorable, and The Return (Vozvrashcheniye) was really good.

Incidentally I thought Låt den rätte komma in was kind of so-so because of some plot peculiarities, and it was explained to me that this is because they left the nasty parts from the book out of the film.

So I just watched (well yesterday) The Amazing Spiderman, it was prety good, it wasn't without it's flaws but it was a pretty good movie.
People keep saying it's a remake of Raimi's Spiderman movies, but it is completely different, it has a completely different tone, no Toby McGuire (thank SPaguetti Monster), just everything, I only liked those movies when I was a kid, but looking back at them, they are not that good, specially the third one.

In summary, I liked it, I am liking this trend of Marvel superhero movies turning out good.

Oh and there was a trailer for the new Swatman, meh, whatever.

His original co-writer, Hampton Fancher, is on board. I don't know if David Peoples is coming back for rewrites. We'll have to wait until they reach that stage of development.

The Amazing Spider-Man was pretty bad, even by superhero movie standards.

Moonrise Kingdom on the other hand was one of the best films I've seen all year.

rate the following movies 1-10

spidey 2
spidey 3
avengers
dark knight
cap america
tennenbaums
life aquatic

The Royal Tenenbaums
The Life Aquatic
Spider-Man 2
The Dark Knight
The Avengers
Captain America
Spider-Man 3

It's really not fair to compare superhero movies to regular movies though. Wes Anderson certainly isn't the messiah of cinema by any means, but superhero movies aren't exactly known for being masterpieces. His films will beat out your average superhero flick any day.

Edit: This is actually a more accurate depiction of how I feel:

Tenenbaums = Life Aquatic > Spidey 2 > Dark Knight > Avengers > Captain America >>>>>>>>>> Spidey 3

I had to evaluate your critical thinking in the superhero movie genre, as well as expose a suspected wes anderson bias.
you passed the first and confirmed the second.

I don't have a Wes Anderson bias, it's just that no supehero blockbuster popcorn flick is going to beat out any film made by someone even half competent. That's why I say it's not really fair to compare them or hold them to the same standards.

Rushmore is Anderson's best film by the way.

Edit: Watchmen had the potential to be ranked among "real" films but Snyder fucked that one up.

I liked it so much I saw it a second time. Couldn't stop thinking about it for a week after the first viewing. Personally I'd say it's my favorite Wes Anderson of the ones I've seen, Rushmore included (and I'm a Rushmore fan).

Anderson is the Roald Dahl of movies.

Actually, just 3. It's only about an hour of added material, with the biggest of them all being the French scene (where I was like, what?). But overall it's pretty good quality. Like the medevac scene.
