The Ultimate Movie Thread of Ultimate Destiny

Saw two movies today:

HUGO - beautifully shot, although it did look like a cartoon half the time (I guess it was never intended to be watched in 2D), with some nice moments but a freaking snore-fest overall, someone has to say it. The whole thing felt to me like a long ad for Hollywood at a time when it desperately needed a boost of artificial integrity. The whole "aren't movies an amazing art" shit was the theme at the Oscars this year, and that's where most of the industry's self-promotion happens, so I'm not surprised that they gave so much praise to Hugo, apparently. Again, there are some things to like but overall, I hated the fake, melodramatic feel of everything, along with the lighthearted unfunny humor and the simple-minded characters that aren't even realistic for a children's story (which this is too tedious to be). I actually checked when the movie would end and still had about HALF to go. Wtf?

MI: Ghost Protocol - What a fucking ride! I don't care if me hating Hugo and liking this one means that I know dick about movies but I was entertained AND on the edge of my seat nearly the whole time. I'm not too big on action movies lately but it doesn't get much better than this: very creative and intense action scenes, exciting locations and some pretty decent humor, mostly of the "holy shit!" variety. I'm respecting Tom Cruise as an action star again. Even if you didn't like the last one, go watch this.

Lol exactly my thoughts. It was taking too long and nothing seemed to be happening. Luckily, I was watching it with two of my buddies so we had something to talk about meanwhile.

I can't think of a more comically self-aggrandizing group of jokers than the Hollywood crowd. We're talking about Martin Scorsese here too...you'd think he would be above that. You would never see a group of novelists get together and do the same thing, or painters, or whatever. Even musicians aren't that full of themselves. I find it quite amusing.

So, I also watched Men in Black 3, I went into the movie expecting almost nothing, but it turned out to be pretty good, I dare say, as good as the first one, it avoided everything the second one did, it went balls deep into the whole alien conspiracy paranoiah setting, it was pretty entertaining.

Let's talk about The Avengers....what did you guys think about it?

I personally thought it was one of the most entertaining action movies that I have seen....they captured the "spirit" of these characters very well and the script was pretty funny...the people in my theater were laughing at many many moments throughout the movie....

My favorite parts were when [spoiler:5339504fc7] Hulk grabbed the guy while he was deploying the parachute, when Hulk punched Thor, and when Hulk beat the shit out of Loki......come to think of it, I guess I really like Thor lol[/spoiler:5339504fc7]

It was pretty good, but a few things really bugged me. Overall it was the best comic movie that Marvel Studios has produced. None of the characters were shortchanged, which was surprising, and it definitely left me wanting to see more. MAJOR SPOILERS!!!!!

[spoiler:8a6fea3b5a] Banner constantly referring to the "other guy" was pretty lame. Just call him the fucking Hulk! So was Black Widows whining "red ledger" side plot. I think a lot of people were confused about Hulk losing control on the heli-carrier, but then being in control later on. Maybe some explanation about Loki's Staff (Mind Gem I assume) would have helped. Overall there were no surprises in the movie really. The good guys beat each other up a little, then they get beat up by the bad guys, then they team up to take home a win. Coulson dying was kinda forced. The alien invasion battle scenes are on point other than a few minor things. The music was pretty decent overall. It did the job well, that much can be said, but it could have been better. I really disliked Black Widow altogether in this movie - Jumping onto speeding alien spaceships, hijacking the alien craft with her knives, and flipping onto the Stark Tower - Really annoyed the piss out of me. Hawkeye and Hulk were dead on. Loki was the perfect villain although he did get his ass kicked quite a bit. Tom Hiddelston is the perfect guy for Loki. No one can dispute that after watching this movie. Well, you can I guess. It was pretty funny throughout the movie, but Stark cracked too many jokes for my liking. The whole cast was pretty good.... I really just want to see Black Widow gone, possibly replaced with Wasp or Scarlet Witch. I look forward to seeing Pym and Wasp soon. It is an exciting time to be a Marvel fan.

If they are leading up to Infinity Gauntlet (They appear to be) then I believe they should introduce Warlock, Doctor Strange, Black Panther, Hank Pym, Wasp, and the Guardians of the Galaxy sometime during Phase 2. All of those characters are rumored to be in development at various states. Thanos should be awesome if done right. Iron Man 3 will kick off Phase 2 soon, so we will see what happens. A Doctor Strange movie could be very badass if done right. Black Panther has a large following , if they cast someone really good (Snipes wanted the role heh), it could rock. Guardians of the Galaxy would be one of those risky movies that might knock one out of the park if done right. Groot and Rocket Raccoon would be adored I'm sure. GROOT SMASH! My eyes twinkle when I imagine how this will play out. The Avengers, Guardians of the Galaxy, and Doctor Strange against Thanos and a bunch of other villains with the fate of the Universe at stake. Epic win if executed properly.

Oh The Avengers
[spoiler:90a1fe6441]Wasn't Black Widows "Blood soaked Ledger" more somethign she used to manipulate Loki? she didn't seem to actually care that much about it. Still she felt like a Typical Whedon female character, where he gives her way too many powers just to fullfill some rather shallow illusion of feminism instead of actually relying on good characterization. Not as annoying as his other Characters, but still. Well I don't think he wrote the Script, because it actually had pretty good dialogue. (LOL ZING!).
I specially liked how both Thor and Loki kept all the ham they had in the Thor movie (wich I tought was decent and pretty funny) They truly felt like they walked out of a Keneth Branagh movie.

I rather liked Cap America's mini character arc. Cap America was one of my favorite Marvel Comics movie.

Iron Man, well Robert Downey Jr IS Tony Stark, period.

I wanted to see mroe of Hawkeye, he seemed like an interesting character, mostly ebcause he seems to be the most grounded of them all, lacking Super Suits, Super Strenght, Godly Powers, or Josh Whedon pandering powers.

But the Character that stole the show for me was Banner/Hulk, specially Hulk, ironic because I never watched the second Hulk movie, I guess the first one (Hulk vs The Poodles) left a bad taste in my mouth.

I also liked Coulson, some people actually think he is alive, remember what Stark said "Fury never tells you everything" [/spoiler:90a1fe6441]
I want to rewatch it, maybe I am gonna go this weekend. Would be the third time now

Well....

[spoiler:301d3d6fa3] She mentioned it to Hawkeye afterward too. She did use that against Loki though. It was just really stupid how she said it. Repeating the same corny phrase ya know? I agree with you on Coulson. They could go with a LMD plot or just say they lied altogether, but who knows. Some people want Coulson to be Vision now, but they have to introduce Pym and Ultron, unless the want to deviate more from the comics. [/spoiler:301d3d6fa3]

I want to watch it again too though, so that is usually a good sign. :D

Charlize Theron as Enchantress? That would work just fine...

I checked out Prometheus this afternoon. Pretty good. Not the best Ridley Scott movie ever, but I wasn't disappointed with it. The art direction is top notch. Definitely one of the best looking movies I've seen, and worth watching on a big screen.

These two movies may not be in the movie theater, but I found them to be my favs. Babel and Crash use 2 awesome plot twist in which everyone of the main characters are connected in someway, yet they never talk or even see each other. I think it is because of this that it is so intriguing to me.

Avengers was a good movie but I don't think I'll ever want to watch it again. Toward the end, I found it increasingly exhausting for some reason, like having my head smashed between two cymbals for too long. I think its the whole final battle section. It was good and looked epic but it wasn't very engaging to me and started to tire me out. I had to refuel on shawarma as soon as I left the theater.

I deliberately tried not to set my expectations high for this one, as I figured it would be a pointless rehash to cash in, but it just seemed like a pointless rehash to cash in.
in retrospect, I wish I had expected naked big titted lesbians.

I saw a couple of fantasy movies. Some remarks:

[1] Legend (Ridley Scott)
- It's got Tom Cruise in it which can be a bad or a good thing depending on your taste.
- I liked the Diablo atmosphere of the last 30 minutes.
- Stupid story, really.
- It's nice to see how/where Ridley Scott got the unicorn footage that turned up in Blade Runner.

[2] Willow (Ron Howard)
- Big disappointment: the lead role is played by a goddamn midget/small person/cretin.
- Val Kilmer is really good in this movie, probably because there really is no competition.
- This movie is filled with midgets, it's fucking crazy. And what's worse: you will soon be reminded of those awful Ewoks in Star Wars VI. Seeing as how George Lucas actually had a hand in making 'Willow', this should not come as a big surprise.
- Story ain't too shabby. Lots of interesting characters.
- By the end of the movie, I liked them horrible midgets so much, I even started to fantasize about midget porn. So go figure.

[3] Stardust
- Hey: it's got Michelle Pfeiffer in it, which is a huge plus even if she looks like a ghoul for most of the movie.
- Robert De Niro is pretty good in his role of queer sky pirate (but the idea is better than the execution, imo).
- Heh: Ricky Gervais is in this movie. It's a nice little cameo, funny enough to be appreciated.
- Storywise I like this movie the best. It's pretty straightforward, which works best for these kind of tales.
- It's funny. It's really funny. I didn't have to laugh once with 'Legend' or 'Willow', but 'Stardust' did the trick. And I like some humour in my movies. It's like the icing on the cake for me.
