The Ultimate Movie Thread of Ultimate Destiny

Remains to be seen, however.

Indeed. Upon close inspection, there are some odd things in the trailer. I think I see a detached head of a Space Jockey on a research table. This could be a different time altogether or have some time travel element. We'll see I guess but I'm super excited.

I'm guessing a leviathan like the Nostromo was well over a century old.
Look at how the US uses aircraft carriers. They have a service lifespan of way over 50 years. Every few decades they let 'em come in, rip out everything, refurbish it & let it go out again (this frequently takes 2-3 years).
The issue is more like the way how the Star Wars episodes 1-3 have been different to 4-6.

I really hope this will not be the case for Prometheus.

Recently watched Sherlock Holmes again. I love what Robert Downey does with the character personally, but I can see how some would prefer the oldschool version. Watched KickAss again and I love it! I need to start picking up the comics again.

Biggest surprise I had was with The Big Lebowski. I put it off forever, but I finally watched it and man was it hilarious. I don't know if it was because I was actually hallucinating while I watched it or not, but the trippy scenes were classic. Jeff Bridges is one of my favorite actors after that. He already had me with True Grit and Iron Man, but now he really impressed me.

Looking forward to Avengers, Ghost Rider 2, Dark Knight Rises, Prometheus, The Hobbit, and The Dark Tower Miniseries.

That's pretty much the reason why I loved the first one so much. The way that he plays Shelock is so different (and so funny) that I cannot see why anybody would like the older, stuffier movies.

It is fresh and new to us, but the old style will stand the test of time I think. When I think of Sherlock I still see the old ones.

What. Sherlock Holmes was a rather simple movie. Nothing really going on in there outside a few explosions and fight scenes. It was rather tasteful at first, but got a bit boring towards the end (although some parts of it were pretty fun). The explosions and fights were satisfying though. But nevertheless, not a lot of in-depth.

As for Big Lebowski, that's a whole lot different topic. It was a bit far too ridiculous at parts, but otherwise a rather convincing movie, a contrast to Sherlock Holmes :)

I agree with Sherlock lagging in the end, but I think it set up the sequel a bit. I have not watched the new one though.

The ridiculousness actually had a purpose though in Lebowski. I thought it was hilarious how the Buscemi character was told to shut the fuck up the whole movie. He just took it. John Goodman made that movie. He was such a typical douchbag, one-upper Vet guy. I loved that. He would bring up Nam for no reason every five minutes. Classic.

Well now I am unsure weather to watch it. Is the brutality used in a way that will further the plot? or is it just torture entertainment?
I've been turning this over in my mind ever since I saw it. It's hard to answer without giving spoilers that would ruin the experience for you. There are definitely some scenes that are very tough to watch, and I'm not sure every detail needed to be in there...but on the other hand I do think there's some justification for it, ultimately. The brutality is not completely gratuitous the way it is in some movies, and it also doesn't fill the story from one end to the other. I wouldn't say it's just torture porn. My complaint is more about how more and more movies seem to be getting more and more nasty.

I think you can handle it. Just be aware that there are a few really horrible parts. I would have preferred to know that ahead of time, I think.

Because it's easier. It's easier to elicit a nauseating, shocking emotional response by showing base, gory shit than it is to write something as compelling and act it out. It's that simple.
That's the essence of my general complaint. Not only is it dehumanizing and unpleasant to watch, it's ham-fisted character creation. I think Lisbeth Salander is a pretty good character though.

And I'm not squeamish, I've seen GWAR live a couple times.
I went to a GWAR concert in Madison in...1993, I'd say. Best rock concert I've ever seen. That's one band that really understands how to put on a show. I can't even say I like their music, but that hardly matters. I was in stitches the whole time.

So if it's set in the Alien universe, I'm having a bit of a hard time placing in it somewhere in the timeline of the established franchise - with the shitty AvP taken into account. Says on Wiki it will be placed in 21st century, which is a bit of inconsistent even with the original Alien
I was under the impression it was going to be about the dead alien they find in the chair of the crashed ship at the beginning of the original movie, but I admit that's hearsay and I really haven't been paying close attention.

It's Ridley Scott, so I'll be willing to give it a shot, even in spite of Robin Hood.

I watched a old Christopher Walkin movie called Communion. It's about a guy getting anal probed by aliens. Weirdest shit I have seen him do by far. The Fx and production values were laughable at best.
The Fright Night remake is horrible. Doesn't live up to the original. Just watched half of Dead Alive, and I was disgusted. I don't get grossed out, but that shit was over the top. Recently watched In the Mouth of Madness for the first time, and I loved every minute of it. I like Lovecraft-esque stories, so it was right up my alley. The part in the theater at the end is classic.

This is reality. This is reality. This is NOT reality. Hahahahahaha!

Saw the new Beavis and Butthead. Fully expected it to suck but it was pretty damn funny.

Surprisingly enough, I concur. The segments where they MST3k MTV shows and music videos are some of the funniest things I've seen on basic cable in a good long while.

Me three. I was super surprised that something brought back that old would still be good or able to resonate with a new audience.

Then again...it's like the Three Stooges. Who could complain about it being aged?

Sincerely,
The Vault Dweller

Am I the only one that think Spielberg is losing it? Super 8 is just one example. Halfway through the movie it derails into a sappy mess. It seemed decent enough at first, but I had to turn it off once they got to the cave. Ridiculous. Who am I to question Spielberg though? I guess every project he is involved in can't be golden. I guess I expect more from a movie when I see him involved.

I watched wrestler, king of kong and cowboys and aliens.
Well cowboys and aliens was bit of a let down, dunno why i was expecting so much from it when it clearly was meant to be cheesy flick with tough main character type of deal, its just i found all the characters to be boring as hell and the aliens were generic independence day aliens. I couldnt watch it all the way through( didnt watch the last 15 minutes or so)

King of kong was funny lightweight documentary about bunch of people and their passion/obsession with old arcade game world records, or rather the particular record of donkey kong and the feud between the challenger and the current record holder.

Wrestler was ok, was expecting too much from it based on the hype from friends, it had its touching moment though and i enjoyed the whole movie through.

Did he direct Super 8?

The last Spielberg movie that I enjoyed enough to watch to the end (and more than once) was The Terminal. I have zero interest in War Horse.

I'm loving the new Beavis and Butthead. It's exactly the same show. I always have faith in Mike Judge, though; his stuff is consistently good. If anything the new B&B makes MTV seem even dumber than it was fifteen years ago, which is frightening.

No Spielberg didn't direct Super 8, he just produced it. I too disliked the ending but it's pretty much in line with his sappy E.T. stuff. I miss the old 1970s Jaws and Duel Spielberg.

I saw the same tour IIRC. Tooks days to wash the fake blood off, and the errr... other fluids. Fun stuff.

Duel is such a gem, shows how good story telling can be done well without a big budget or cramming useless CG shit in for it's own sake.
I too could never stand his sappy streak. Saw ET in the theaters as a kid and never hit me Even as a kid I
I know this is blasphemy, but even as a kid thought Goonies was 'meh' too.

I am a pretty bad Tarantino fan, I have watched all of his movies.... except for Reservoir Dogs, well I HAD up until now, I am startng to love Netflix. Reservoir Dogs was pretty cool, I still like Inglorious Basterds and Pulp Fiction more but it still was a pretty good movie, with an obvious low budget.

Luckily it was raining the night I saw GWAR, so I happened to be wearing a raincoat. It got hit with a big stream of green "other fluids."

I've always hated E.T. and I probably appreciate The Goonies more now than I did when I was a kid (Corey Feldman's character is such a whiny POS in that movie). I liked Poltergeist and Close Encounters of the Third Kind.

Have you seen the BBC TV series Sherlock? It's pretty good. It's a modern-day version of Sherlock Holmes. Not stuffy at all.
