Think a voiced protagonist is a bad idea? Here's Bethesda's reasoning!

I absolutely HATE having a voice protagonist and its one of the main reasons why I am not buying this game. And No Bethesda the reason why people didn't the conversations in 3 wasn't because they weren't spoken out loud by the character but because the dialogue sucked and now we get to hear our character speak your wonderful and well written dialogue. :irked: My main gripe with a voiced protagonist is that modding for quest mods is going to be so much harder or impossible now because of a voiced character.

The IGN comments gave me ebola.

What IGN comments?

Like almost all of the comments there. People saying that Fallout 3 gave them unrestricted freedom (even too much so), people saying that if you make the game more linear the story gets better, people saying that they skipped all the conversations on F3 and FNV to "get back to playing the game", people saying that they want everything to be narrated because (actual quotes!) "reading is boring" and "it's 2015". This and so many other atrocities... Please dont ask me to reference or quote these things, I never want to read any of this again.

So basically like Fallout: New Vegas.

Still don't see what's wrong with that.
Uh no, Fallout New Vegas had a lot of options for ever ycharacter build to be viable, even skill checks in conversation and extensive dalogue options. It wasn't like Mass Effect at all.

Truly the written word has become a wholly unappreciated art form, if people cannot be bothered to read in an RPG.

I'm of two minds about this whole thing. I can understand and somewhat agree with Bethesda's reasoning, but I also understand and somewhat agree with you guys' reasoning.

In short:

Bethesda: We know the stats/demographic and how to appeal to them.
NMA: We want more depth and nuance, and VA is a standard part of aRPG packaged deal that never stops to disappoint cRPG fans.

Different developers, Walpknut. Different priorities. Clearly Obsidian prioritized lore first over gameplay; they had the wherewithal to do that, at least, since they were simply using an engine and assets that were already made for them. Bethesda, however, clearly prioritizes gameplay pretty high over story.

Indeed, Obsidian played to their strength (character and story) which can be seen by the number of dialogue lines in each title FO3-40k FO:NV-65k

Although, I don't know how good metric dialogue lines are. The Witcher3 has 70k... but then GTA IV had 80k.. GTA V has 160k

Every character build with a modded game that removed all skill points outside of one. Otherwise, you end up maxing out and basically nullify your build.

Most of the dialouge in FO 3 and NV had 3 or 4 paths you could go down so the wheel might not necessarily limit the speech options any more than they were in the past.

I liked mass effect for what it was and I like the idea of combining action with RPG but not if the RPG elements are really dumbed down like they were in the last 2 ME games.

Hey Moyra, do you have any items to trade?
Why are you writing this book?
About my current mission...
Can you do repairs?
Any news about Megaton?
Have you thought about disarming the bomb?

Oops, can't fit that on 4 buttons...

Which is why I repost over and over again on reddit this video to wake sheeple up:

Hey Moyra, do you have any items to trade? - opens trade menu
About my current mission - why are you writing this book + 3 more options
Can you do repairs? - opens repair menu
Any news about Megaton? - Have you thought about disarming the bomb? + 3 more options

It can be done + maybe the barter and repair services wont be a part of the conversation and may be accessed some other way

People just like to "get more stuff", it is primal hoarding survival instincts.

Want more money? YES.
Want more cake? YES.
Want more apps? YES.
Want more menus and lists and buttons and shit obscuring your view? Hmmm - wait, you said more? Yes. More. YES.

so, that's all the angle Beth needs to advertise a speaking rpg protagonist - "But wait - there's MORE!"

I always took the dialogue in the wheel to mean that this the "gist"/meaning of what the character actually says. The problem of a SILENT protagonist is that you have to either imagine a voice (which unless you play the same gender as yourself, is hard to do) or suspend disbelief and just call your character a telepathic mute.

You can't max out Skills in New Vegas without the DLCs.

I would say that there is NO build in NV, just "which skills do I max FIRST?".

But I am not de-railing any more threads here. Have your cake, I do not care.

Well good thing because you are making no sense.

This is a Level up screen of a character I have been playing, he is past the Vanilla level cap and I see a lot of skills not maxed out, hell some of the are very Low level. I don't min max, but I know that without the DLCs you can't Max out all skills. And Old World Blues adds a Trait that allows you to cap your level to 30.

Also, it's hard to make up a voice for a character? What about books? You have never read books?
I rather decide myself what the character is saying, knowing full well what I am about to say instead of just getting a "gist of it" just to have have some generic gruff voiced dude voicing my character. Voice acting doesn't improve a story, but bland voice acting actually can ruin it altogether, specially when the point is making a character yourself.

So instead of havign a quick access list of topics and options, all written in full + all of it being controlled by 2 commands or inputs (analogue for going up and down, action button to choose) You are instead given a menu where you have to continuosly switch between tabs, every switch of the tab done with a different button I might add, just so you can get to the option you would've gotten there with a single button and picking an item on a list? And all of this with 2 word summaries on what yo uare actually saying so you have no idea of what is your character going to actually say.

As a graphic designer, that's a poorly designed interface. Like, completely awfully designed.

Im not saying its a good idea, im just saying that its theoretically possible to have more dialouge options.

Will they? Probably not

'Fraid we'll have to agree to disagree here then. I really don't see how all this change is going to destroy the franchise or whatever it is you're worried about. If anything, it'll probably save it -- CRPGs only appeal to a niche market and those really don't make a lot of money.

Besides, the gameplay doesn't make it "Fallout" to me -- the story and setting do. Even if the story sucks, which I frankly also can't see in FO3. Could it have been better? Hell yes. If anything, it felt more along the lines of unfinished/rushed to me rather than sucky; again, they probably tacked it on as an afterthought after making the game mechanics and such first. I recall The Pitt being on the same level as Fallout: New Vegas -- that DLC made me uncomfortable morally towards the end.

I liked the pitt and the end was morally in the gray area but new vegas it was not. If Ashur and Werner had been developed more it would have made the decision that much more difficult. In the NV DLCs the characters were much more developed.
