Robben is still a lovely player to watch. He seems to look about 3 years older everytime i see him though.

Italy are about as crap as i expected. France somewhat crapper. Toulalan + Makelelelele? Idee merveilleuse! I assumed Malouda was just crap for Chelsea, but in fact he is just crap in general.

Wow what the hell happened here. Beautiful exciting game.

4-1 what a result. Not the beating the French deserved, though. The final fifteen minutes of the first half, and the first 15 minutes of the second half were solidly on the French side, and they looked to be more of a team than they looked against Romania.

I think, though, this was mostly due to Engelaar not being in the same form he was against Italy. But when Robben came on for Engelaar you could see the Dutch losing the battle on the midfield, which changed again when Van Persie came on.

Van Gol played an absolutely brilliant game, though. He played as the target man, catching the ball and distributing it to the swirling midfielders around him.

And really, what about those goals? The first goal was just ridiculous defending by the French, specifically Malouda marking Kuyt but not even looking at the ball. The second goal was absolutely beautiful, with a great move by Van the Man to give Robben the ball, who put in a perfect cross to Van Persie, finishing it off with a sickeningly hard shot.
Henry's goal was a beauty as well, he had Van der Sar completely fooled, which is hard to do.
Robben's goal was just ridiculously good. How he could score from that angle is a miracle, and that was what crushed the French hopes as well coming only seconds after Henry's goal.
And finally Sneijder's beautiful 20 meter shot off the crossbar in injury time.

Also Motty is still the best commentator out there.

EDIT:
Really, beating the two world finalists with a 3 goal difference is absolutely crushing.

Missed Romania - Italy

Way to go dutchies. 4-1 against france? I don't know who else could have done it. Not that france is anything solid this year though.

Netherlands are amazing, end of story. What a wake up from the qualifiers struggle and the mediocre performances in the friendlies. I'm honestly shocked. France didn't even play bad, they played much better than vs Romania, and Neds still put 4 in.

Wow. Just wow. Fantastic performance.

Also, Robbens goal is the best one yet on this tourney, i think. Perfect counter, sick angle on the finisher.

Also, Ruud is having a great tournament so far, i suppose this puts my speculations, about Klaas-Jan being the first squad choice, to sleep.

Wow, Congratulations to the Netherlands team and to all the Dutch fans.
Great Game. Great Result. And Great Ass Kick on the French!

Every day that passes, I wish even more that Portugal can meet the Netherlands on the Final.

Maybe it's because of that chick in Brother Nones sig.

Yes. Even though she's Latvian.

Great match. Watched in a friend's house, 20 of us, beers, a beamer...can't get a better atmosphere than that unless you're actually there.

Nail-biter in the middle half hour, tho'. The goal-difference isn't that representative of the difference on the field: France was pretty strong, and you could tell that once Engelaar was given little time (he's just too slow, doesn't pass quick enough and passes back too many times), the natural flow towards our offence stops. Ruud is a good striker, but even he can't score without the ball.

That problem ate us up before, and if some coach is smart enough to recognise the flaw and has the players to abuse it, we're in trouble.

So, even tho' the Netherlands ain't as perfect as the score would indicate, still the best so far.

Hope it's Germany in the finals for a good match, or Portugal so we can humiliate the little pitch-fuckers.

remember 74? well i dont. but the scenario was very similar: nederlands beat the living shit out of every single team on their way to the cup, then lost in the finals. was great football then (actually the first team that did "raumdeckung" (i dont know how you anglosaxians name that - its defending spaces instead of sticking to an opponent)) and is GREAT football now. up til now, the most entertaining football in the euro. id love to see more of this.

perhaps the people from the netherlands dont exactly like to hear, what people in german sing.*

*- "orange - trägt nur die müllabfuhr" sung along "go west". roughly translated: "orange - only worn by garbagemen"

I wouldn't call covering areas of the field the most important hallmark of the '74 team, really.

And no, this isn't even close to '74. While we're playing good football, it's really not up to the standard of '74 which was simply revolutionary football built around Cruyff as a center forward who could travel all over the field. At most this is a somewhat weaker version of '74.

'Zonal marking'

Wow what a final minute thriller, again. Tournament of injury time, seems like.

But Spain was disappointing overall. The midfield couldn't get it going, and it broke down into a bunch of loose individual actions with no coherence. Partly because Sweden played a good match defensively and managed to disrupt the Spanish midfield very well, partly because they're still not fully a team.

And man oh man was Ramos failing hard today.

Still, time for Russia to beat Greece and keep their second round hopes alive. I can't get my head around what they need to win by to need a draw vs Sweden next week, though. 4-0 I think, but that can't be right.

Besides, we were the best team in '74. No contest.

That doesn't matter if you win fuck all though.
Ehm, yes it does, because you get to brag about being the best team, duh.
It's not as if winning the cup matters beyond bragging rights.

Also gogo Russia IMO.

Well shit, it looks like Sweden will have to beat the Ruskies (or make it a draw at least due to the goal difference if I remember correctly), this will be a tough game. Especially since Swedens attack force, Ibrahimovic and Henke Larsson, are both looking problematic. Ibrahimovic has a semi-injured knee (hopefully that will be better in the next game), and Henke Larsson has just seemed really tired so far. Without those two, Sweden is seriously lacking attack power.

Which we saw in the game today, I think Sweden was actually defending themselves pretty decently against Spain, but completely lost any offensive power when Ibrahimovic was benched during for the second half.

I never really expected Greece to repeat the triumph of 2004 but anyway. As DaVinci really couldn't have re-drawn Mona Lisa exactly the same, it's the same with Rehagel, he couldn't possibly bring forward the same masterpiece-team as in 2004.

Cheers to the 2004 European Champions. My hopes now lie with Spain.

Pffffbuaaaahahahahahahahaww.

Second most stupid comparison I've read this year. 'Grats.

I'm eager to hear the first worst comparison...

Anyway, my sentiments stand, no matter how flawed they might seem.

It was something about comparing Welsh to nazi Germany in a Chinese submarine thread.

But sure, point taken.

Sigh. Dudes, it was kind of a give-away the best trained would be the most likely to get to the top. The fact Polandia got to the championship and England didn't, is already something unusual.

Even if they have stupid referees.
