Voice acting - Liam Neeson has lead role in Fallout 3

"Lead role" does seem to send some bad vibes.
Nobody in Fallout 1 and 2 had lead roles. Sure you had awesome actors in it, but their characters came and went. *You* were the star.
If they're going the Oblivion route of your character playing second fiddle to the celebrity guest star... well, that's just not Fallout.
Nowhere does it say 'lead role'. It only says that Liam Neeson leads the cast. Patrick Stewart led the cast in Oblivion as well.

Liam Neeson to Play Lead Role in Fallout 3

Seriously though, I think NMA should really think over its - well we can't really be the judge of the end product seeing as we don't know anything substantial yet - stance. For instance, if Ron Howard is asked to do a Apocalypse Now sequel it's just plain insane to maintain that you can't be a judge of the quality beforehand.

I'm sorry, do we do that? Is it 'our stance'?
Nope. All *I* am doing is refuting that this 'proves' something. I still don't believe Bethesda can do a proper roleplaying game, or understand what such a roleplaying game is. I haven't seen any evidence that they understand the Fallout setting, or its gameplay elements.
I just can't stand faulty logic.

Heh. I can't believe I've read over that, like, ten times.

Uhm, yeah, maybe it's just that not one of us owns a Jump-To-Conclusions Mat.

What background? That he came from a Vault? No major info, you'd get a clean slate, right from the start.

Clean slate? Right from the start you're different from absolutely everyone around you. Living all your life in a vault versus living all your life in the ravaged wastes is a hugely defining characteristic.

There were lots of times in dialog where you could proclaim yourself to be a simple traveller from a village to the north/west/east/whatever the other direction is. There was no onus on you to swing around the nearest lightpole praising the Overseer. How big a factor your being from a Vault was was up to you.

Anyway, I'm willing to give them the benefit of the doubt on this issue since hiring people who are well known actors is not an outright bad idea. The overtones of the role he's playing vibe me the bad way, but live and let live I think, and as long as I'm able to kick him in the nuts, I'm game.

The thing is Bethesda have given us.. two pieces of generic post-apocalyptic art.. one unmoving music track and.. an announcement of Liam Neeson in a major role.
This is not how you should preview a game, especially one with an already established name.
Bethesda fully deserve the ire against them because of their attitude and misguided priorities.

It's not enough to judge the game, but it all adds up in judging the makers.

Hm, all this "father" thing kinda goes against Fallout's Mad Max-ish roots. You are supposed to be a lone wolf, who comes into the city, messes(fixes) everything up and goes along his way. I will be fine with "father" only if he appears once in the beginning of the game, gives you the MacGuffin and then quietly disappears... which is not seems to be the case, since he will "appear prominently throughout the game".

Unless your father is the antagonist. Which would be, like, TOTALLY AWESOME.

Fallout has no Mad Maxish roots.
It used some elements of Mad Max, but also some of Planet of the Apes(Part 2 mainly) or the Omega man.
Fallout is unique and thats something rare these days.
Thats the reason so many peeps are afraid of Bethesda changing it.

Did i say peeps?

Neeson has a good voice but I can't recall him ever having done a Post Apoc themed anything. I'm willing to give him the benefit of a doubt.

i just hope that for players whom prefer "a bad guy" style of gameplay (me!) it doesnt mean shit kind of "oh son what have u done?" / "how could you?!" etc.

I don't know.. it might be funny if done right.
I still remember the reaction of the starbase commander in Star Control 2 when I sold a bunch of my crew off to evil aliens.

"You are a HEINOUS SLAVE TRADER!!!!!!"

I'm pretty split about this. Liam Neeson is good actor. A great actor, even. But he's got an accent which doesn't really vibe with the whole "East Coast" thing.

If Mr. Neeson doesn't talk too much, and doesn't have shit lines, then I think we're in for a treat.

Yeah, the horribly unfitting accent. As far as I know, there's a shitload of people on the East Coast who are of Irish ancestry. His accent is the least of our concerns (Bethesda's ability to give Neeson a good script being the biggest). I deem this good news.

Anyways, according to Norwegian gaming site Gamer.no, the following actors are in as well:
Den øvrige rollelisten inkluderer Keith David (They Live), Clancy Brown (Highlander), Ron Perlman (Hellboy), Richard Dean Anderson (MacGyver), Brad Garrett (Everybody Loves Raymond), Tony Shalhoub (Monk), David Warner (Tron), og CCH Pounder (The Shield).
