What did Bethesda actually do better than Black Isle?

I think alot of the art direction is done extremely well. The buildings and such look really good, the settings are also top notch.
The complaints about the visuals are a bit puzzling, especially when compared to the older pixellated games.

To call this piece of work 'soulless' is really unfair, they really *did* try to make a great Fallout game.
It happens to be much more difficult with all the spoken dialogue to give the sheer number of options that 1 or 2 had, unfortunately.

I will say this: I was absolutely *compelled* to play both F1&F2 until I finished (tactics...not so much)
I find I also am *very* compelled to play this game. I really like it, seeing the FO universe in first person 3D is really a treat. There are also visceral advantages to the First person play. When was the last time you actually jumped from your seat exploring 1 or 2? I know the first time I was attacked by a feral ghoul in an old train station, I did. Or Deathclaws. Deathclaws are wicked!

Look, is it as good as the first 2?
No, but what is, right? Especially in the rosy light of nostalgia.

heh, funny this speak of nostalgia. You'd think that we would be tired of a game after 10 years if it was strictly nostalgia compelling us to be so passionate about a game series we truly enjoy.

The Shishkebab is fun. I stuck about 25 points into Melee by level five or so, not a whole heaping lot, just enough so that if I ever did happen to run out of ammo, that chinese sword would be at least somewhat useful.

I noticed very little difference. Also, why is it that EVERY SINGLE SWORD in the game is a Chinese Officer's Sword? Even the Vampire's Edge is the same model. It's Bethesda, surely they have a shitload of sword models laying around that they could have used/modified and put in this game. I have a hard time believing there were that many Chinese Officer's running around in DC when the bombs went off.

Uhm why would Chinese Officers carry swords anyways? Because they like the Japanese military tradition? I somehow doubt that very much.

i don't agree that repair deserves much praise. i find it very tedious.

sure it's somewhat of a challenge in the lower levels, but it doesn't take that long where you're basically at 'shoot-shoot-shoot, loot-loot-loot', then repair your stuff.

running out of space (weight limit)? then repair one or two guns, or some armor to free up a few extra pounds and to make the weapon worth more... but then you realize how fast caps accumulate

and the whole skill thing. with decent INT, and running into skill books and bobbleheads, it doesn't take a lot of work to max out your relevant skills. I'm at level 16 I believe, and everything short of barter, melee, unarmed, medicine (which is at 50ish) and maybe something else is at 100.

good thing I can say is the graphics look better, but i don't play games for the sole purpose of enjoying graphics.. so :|

Yeah, also a very good point. Why are there Chinese ghouls running around in DC? I get that we were at war, but it's completely stupid. As far as the swords go, blatant laziness.

Uhh, don't some officers in the US military carry ceremonial swords? I don't see how it's a stretch that Chinese officers might do the same in this alternate universe. That is, if they don't already.

And I REALLY can't see how an additional weapon is "blatant laziness" on the part of the developers.

uhh, aren't we talking about WASHINGTON DC, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA?

US Marines are issued ceremonial swords upon graduation of their boot camp, yes, but I did not see a single US Marine Corps Saber in Fallout three, again, all I saw were CHINESE Officer's Swords, you know, carried by the Chinese Officer's in the game, you know, in America, specifically the American Capitol. Wow.

The blatant laziness comment was directed towards the fact that you can find an abundance of Chinese Officer's Swords all over DC, yet you are unable to find any other sord of sword aside from the Shiskebob (which is really a rigged up lawn mower blade). You know, it makes me wonder what happened to all the more, at least in my opinion, common blades, like a machette, or even those flashy Marine Sabers we were just talking about. Where did all those go?

Your completely right. Everything that was made before this week we all like because of the rosy light of nostalgia. I guess everyone that likes a writer like Shakespeare or a director like Coppola or Kubrick are all looking though Nostalgia tinted glasses.

I think sneaking is much better implemented in this game. It has its retarded moments, but it serves a much better purposes than toggling it just so you can loot bookcases.

I also think stealing is better implemented than in FO1 & 2, although it's annoying that a whole town can turn hostile just because you look at some stuff

Beth should have put in Mounties.

The RCMP would at least make more sense than the Chinese... and it would have made my Canadian heart go all aflutter.

And you see dead Chinese soldiers fairly often. They clearly invaded. It's not strange that they may have brought their ceremonial swords with them.

On the one hand, I agree with you that having a US ceremonial sword would be nice, but honestly there's a lot of melee weapons in the game already. Calling it 'blatant laziness' is over the top and only done because the cool thing to do here is bash Bethesda as much as possible.

It'd be such a waste not to utilise those lovely Oblivion models.

Case in point.

you first played fallout 1 and 2 when you were significantly younger then you are now

Yes, invaded as far as Alaska before being defeated by superior power armor technology. Now, I'm no professor of geography but I was under the impression that Washington D.C. lay quite a ways from Alaska, no?

No way to explain occurrence of these weapons other than through blatant rape of canon, and you wouldn't want to do that, would you?

Would you?

To the original poster: I really like grenades. That's about it.
