Why are so many people buying this game?

It all depends on what you're looking for. A lot of fans like the game because it gives them that escape pretty readily. It's RPG lite, no matter how you cut it, but it's a wide open world where you can kind of go anywhere, do anything -- although that phrase has kind of lost its way since Morrowind. For a lot of us, who've grown up playing RPGs, traveling the wastes in the original Fallouts, adventuring in the world of Baldur's Gate, or discovering the world of Arcanum, Fallout 4 doesn't really scratch that itch. It's also a series we've been supporting and following since the beginning, so there's a level of disgust toward what the series has become rather than what it could have been.

I can't say there isn't some level of fun to the game if that's the kind of fun you're looking for, but as an RPG, it doesn't really stand up to what has come before and what we've grown to like from the RPG genre.

I can only speak for myself when it comes to why someone would purchase it. Simple, I've enjoyed all previous entries outside of BOS and don't mind Action RPGs. I enjoy a wide range of games. And I prefer Fallout 4 to many of its contemporaries except perhaps split screen Borderlands at the height of my game. It has just enough of that classic Fallout spunk to justify me spending money on it and I happen to enjoy Bethesda games normally. At least until the idiocy of the latter game sets in.

I suppose I'm simply not cynical enough to stop enjoying games. Doesn't mean I won't fairly critique it.

Does anyone here have theories on why this game is so popular?
I blame Todd Howard, who has mastered the old trick used by Rattenfänger von Hameln before. He's very mesmerizing with his sweet melodic voice, slowly spreading silky web of his lies, luring unsuspecting young folks right into the trap! :look:

I always thought Todd Howard sounded like an idiotic fucking twelve year-old even before Fallout 3. And I've always liked Bethesda games. He just seems like an overbearing, empty-headed manchild to me. Like the Michael Bay of game development.

Agreed, he doesn't seem to be a genius, just a guy spouting lies, sweet fucking lies!

It's popular for identical reasons to Destiny and Borderlands. Its simple, easy to understand, and designed to appeal to psychological gratification structures in our brain. It doesn't need complexity as long as it can appeal to the lowest common denominator. And their assessment of quality is in sales figures, not critical reception. This is actually the lowest rated Fallout game ever released on Metacritic.

They even mentioned that they took inspiration from Destiny in their marketing articles online. As for Borderlands, I'm surprised they didn't just say "F*** it, let's make Fallout 4 a Co-Op game!"

I almost wish I didn't type that because I don't want them getting ideas.

Is the only evidence that suggests they started the Great War that audio log of the soldier being interrogated? Because I don't think that definitely proves it by any stretch. So if that is the case at least you can feel better about the lore. I certainly don't think Mothership Zeta established any lore - I've played it multiple times and have yet to see anything definitely suggesting aliens orchestrated the Great War.

Personally, I didn't think it was going to be good and I didn't buy it.

When the GOTY edition is on Steam for $10 or less and I can mod it to be not terrible, then I might pick it up.

Maybe by then it'll have Steam Trading Cards too. >_>

Limited but still, aliens? What idiot made that?

I, for one, know that this isn't an RPG and I don't care. I play Beth games for the same reasons I play Borderlands or Far Cry; it's fun. I play games primarily because they're fun and more entertaining than my regular life. I'll probably wait until February to play, but I'm thinking that's when PS4 mods will be out anyway.

Awesome. Then you're heads in the right place about it. Though I would caution you waiting on mods. PS4 modding support probably won't show up until around July.

Really? I'd imagine BethSoft would want the mods to come out as soon as possible, to make sure they get as many sweet moneys as possible.

Good responses, thanks everyone. That was definitely helpful.

P.S. for the record I don't dislike games such as FarCry; in fact I made a compilation mod for it.

Reasons in no particular order

1. Cus I can (as opposed to can not, my computer wouldn't be able to run it, but I recently got a Playstation, so, I can!)
2. Cus I can (usually I'd be too broke to bother, but I'm not broke anymore, so, I can!)
3. To try it out, first hand, facilitated by 1 and 2^
4. To shut my friend up, because he would be giving me hell if I were to stubbornly "boycott" it
5. I only have two other games. My collection looks pathetic.
6. I actually imagined that it would probably be fun enough to just roam the countryside, listen to radio, and explore stuff. I was wrong, sue me >:I

Not a bad game on its own, but a terrible Fallout. Pretty much the general consensus, people just want to find something "fun" to play. I honestly don't think FO4 is very fun after 40 or so hours but yeah, I guess most people do.
