Why are so many people buying this game?

I've seen shit like this before with people who try to act elitist and claim that a game is bad even though the amount of hours they've invested in it says otherwise. I don't know if that's the case here, but regardless, if he put that many hours into the game and still says it's bad, well, then I think there's something wrong with him or he's just being a hypocrite.

One explanation is that he was digging desperately to find moments of brilliance in the game. I’ve certainly been in the same position: tolerating something unpleasant in hope that the situation will improve.

He’s giving the game a chance, and it ha’n’t paid off.

Why would you put 60 hours into a game if you thought it was bad?

The answer is simple: algophilia.

If he didn't play it all the way through there would be people saying he only thought it was bad because he didn't play it all the way through for 60 hours.

You're allowed to buy a game, take in everything it has to offer, and draw a conclusion. It's this thing called freedom.

Personally, I think Fallout 4 is a totally mediocre game that is just enough to make me play it but not enough to make me satisfied at all. So I'm playing it despite Kid in the Fridge and other nonsense. And as an RPG/Fallout game it is awful.

People and their demands for how others should react and feel, can fuck right off.

This is like when people criticize reactions to trauma "That was the wrong reaction. People don't stiffen and stare like that, they run and scream. That reaction was incorrect."

Maybe, but he also said the game was very addictive, which means he was having fun.

Well, those people are wrong and should be ignored. If you're not reviewing a game you're not obligated to play it all the way through to have an opinion. And again, he put 60 hours into it and said the game was addictive. It's only addictive if you're having fun.

You're either having a good time with the game or you're not. Mediocre games can be just as fun as truly great games. I just think it's stupid to shit on a game that you've put that much time into because you were having fun. And to do it (not saying this is the case necessarily) out of a sense of elitism is, quite frankly, retarded.

Not necessarily. An addictive substance is not necessarily a pleasurable one. Crack is addictive, but nobody praises crack because of that.

Video games are not crack. If a game makes you come back to it after putting it down the first time, then it obviously has some redeeming qualities. It means you had enough fun or found something about it that was engaging enough the first time around to be willing to give it a second go.

People are entitled to buy and play whatever they choose. They are also entitled to think its dogshit and keep going.

I never said they weren't.

@Riven326 Collecting all the bobbleheads mostly, is why I spent that much time on the game. Like I said, compulsion / addiction. I legitimately had fun at the beginning but the more I played the more I realized it sucked. Fallout 3 is not a bad game per se, but it's a soulless game. That's the best way i can describe it. By the end the only reason I was playing was to get the rest of the bobbleheads but I stopped before getting them all. I just couldn't justify it any more, I was miserable.

I believe part of why games like Bethesda's are so popular is that most people don't know the difference between Skinner compulsion and actual fun. Just because we urgently desire to continue playing doesn't mean we're actually enjoying ourselves. Many people are aware of this at some level but they deny it.

I also wanted to see if the main story would get better, but it didn't.

P.S. I'm not being a hypocrite, it's the other theory / conclusion of yours: I fully admit I have a problem. I behave compulsively with addictive things very easily. It's very problematic, has had a significant effect on my life, and led me to waste thousands of hours of my time.

P.P.S. You seem to not understand the relationship between addiction, compulsion, and pleasure. As a couple others said, doing something and enjoying something are not the same and are not mutually exclusive. This is well-established.

P.P.P.S. It's also well-established that video games can be addictive, and that furthermore, game designers specifically capitalize on this because they make more money that way. Video games can effect some parts of the brain in the same way other addictive things do, because of how we process goals, progress, rewards, desire, pleasure, etc.

What is it that changed that made you go from having fun in the game to not having fun? I don't recall any drastic changes during the course of the game that would make me do a 180.

I updated my post, that might answer your question.

Anyway the main thing was the more I played it, the more I noticed all the problems with the game.

I see. I apologize if I came off as rude. It's just that most of the time people who put a significant amount of hours into a game and then go onto a message board to say how bad it is, are usually the type who just want attention or feel like exercising some narcissistic tendencies.

I have something like 120 hours in Fallout 4 so far. Since it came out, I barely played any other game. (Some Armored Warfare and World of Warships here and there) And I think it's a very bad game. Why do I still play it? Novelty. It's a new game, one I haven't seen much of, so I want to see what it has to offer. I want to explore, I want to experience something I haven't experienced before.
It is also within my comfort zone. I'm very reluctant to pick up new, different things, be it games, music, movies or TV shows. This is called "Fallout" and it has some vaguely fallouty qualities. It is a bad game, it has almost nothing of real fallout, but it's within the comfort zone so I play it and despise it at the same time.
I also try to find some redeeming qualities, so to say that it's not this bad. It's not easy.

Sounds like you're just giving yourself a headache.

lol fair enough. It's all good, no worries, group hug. I probably would have said the same things if i were you.

I used to have problems with drugs and alcohol, so I'm actually glad that my worst compulsions these days are things like food and video games.

Also for the record since text doesn't have tone, none of my post above was intended as angry or defensive. My favorite comic rendition of text's lack of tone:

Wait so you can kill FATHER when you first encounter him and nothing is affected by his death? Do you still go through the rest of the story line like as if he was still alive or does it turn out to fail the quest if you kill him on first contact?

I didn't notice your reply
Eh, it just doesn't react
Had it reacted, it would have said "mission failed" or something substantial, which is what I genuinely expected, I mean, I shoot him right there, but you're just dead-ended. He's a corpse on the floor, and you're surrounded by inaccessible doors, you can only go back to the elevator which you arrived in. I'm not sure if you can teleport back home, or if you just... break the game :D I loaded previous save, when I realized I pretty much have to play along with him - down to "i missed u so much boo-hoo" and all that lame-ass crap

At least I pretended that I was coldly feigning sympathy...

Because it's a good game with ton of content. It's a shamelessly casual, bland game: it's a shooter, it's an open world game, it has crafting and it has settlement building.

She's hot, she has the curves, she has the act and she's good at bed too. One simply can not notice how shallow this gold digger until it's too late.

I think dismissing criticism of a video game as "elitism" is, as you put it: "quite frankly, retarded."
