It's almost starting! Woot! So any new predictions based on the preparation games? And how is everything going with your national team?

Turning initial post of this into a poll, since Briosa saw fit to bump this into our official World Cup thread.

PS: The Netherlands is looking worse by the minute. Buncha hacks.

Brasil. Jogo Bonito and all that noise.

I expect the US to at least get to the quarterfinals. Just like last time. We are making up ground on the rest of the world. World Cup finalists in 2010.
Uh... yeah. Becoming finalist in a sport no american cares about
That's like an Austrian Team taking part in the world series.

Wrong. Oh so very wrong. Football is one the rise in the US in popularity numbers as well as in your team's skill. It's bound to be one of your bigger sports by the next generation at the last.

Except for the injuries, this time i think Holland is doing fine, they finally understood the importance of the game on the sides, and that great strickers need a very carefully balance midfield. I mean the 3/3/4 and 3/4/3 tactics work well with weaker teams, but with good defenses they could be suicidal without fast players playing on the sides and a midfield that does more than trying to recover balls behind. I think you've learned your lesson now.

With Jorge Andrade out, Portugal's defense, that already would have to do miracles in this World cup is shattered, and with Maniche, Costinha and Deco in very poor physical conditions nothing good will come out from them. Even if they pass to the next stage they would have to play with either Argentina, Holland or Ivory Coast, so there's no chance for them.

But yet no matter how my national team results turn out, i just love a good World Cup, i've been watching them since Argentina/78 and i can't get enough! :)

Croatia, of course. They have the world's most powerful secret organization on their side.

Australia!!

Well I do understand they really have a minute chance, but hey, I can always hope.

In any other guess, I'd say either Brazil, or England. England you question?? Yeah I'm not sure either, just a feeling I have.

my money is on Argentine.

that being said: football/soccer sucks donkeydick except if you play it yourself. i really cant fathom why a bunch of sweaty guys would sit together yelling at a widescreen tv over some overpaid athletes kicking a ball around.

sure, there's beer, sure there's friends, but i just cant understand the football crap. as far as i can see the WC is an excuse to get drunk & boast nationalistic crap. but guess what? you dont need an excuse for that...

So re you whinging about soccer the game, or the people who sit around and watch soccer on TV?

I'm sure there is something you do that is anti-sociable, while you watch your sweaty guy friends yelling and screaming...

it's not about being anti-social or anything. i have friends!

no, really!

but all kidding aside, what bothers me is a lot of things:
- dont you think this is a bit too much 'bread & games'?
- dont you think there is just a wee bit too much money involved? it's pretty decadent if you ask me.
- i never understood the nationalist behavior of cheering for a bunch of guys who wear 'your shirt' and defend 'your nation' for no other reason than that they are from 'your country'...
- i dont need a lame excuse to get drunk
- i dont need a lame excuse to hang out with my friends

i used to play football too when i was a kid (at Lokeren, pretty good team). that was fun stuff. but i cant see how you can enjoy just sitting there, looking at the stupid tv. i can almost understand being in the tribunes, it's a different atmosphere altogether.

There's actually next to not money involved as far as the players are concerned during the WC and EC, which is exactly what sets it apart from team football.

I don't watch football on a national or international level between teams. The hell do I care if Chelsea's wallet is bigger than FC Barcelona's? Piss off.

In any case, I choose to get dragged along or not. If I make the choice, it's pretty simple, I want to enjoy it and thus I do. Whuz wrong with that?

Well I used to play soccer, I did for 10 years, but now the whole fanfare of it has just worn off, I'm over it.

Well money isn't really too involved in the WC, its just the other league cups you are referring to. Take a look at the English FA Cup, fucking massive amounts of money are paid to these players just to kick a ball, I mean they do it with much skill, but it's remarkably ridiculous.

But come on SuAside, some people really do get a kick out of watching soccer on 'stupid tv'. I don't but I do think other people can without bothering them.

Nothing... Just give us this few weeks SuAside to enjoy a few games of soccer. This comes around every 4 years, so make the most of it!

Well, I bet all of my money on Justine Henin. I don't think that Kuznetsova stands a chance really.

What? :look:
