Nah, not really. People were expecting the team to win a match, though.

Sweden rules.

Ok, I don't really enjoy the soccer - I mostly enjoy the beer, pals and mood that comes with it. (None of the pals are hooligans, just people enjoying watching a game together). While watching a game, it's not like we sit glued to the TV, but crap-talk quite a bit, and just get a mood-boost in the case of a Swedish goal/victory. Pretty good mindless fun if you ask me - especially since I wouldn't really care if we got kicked out, it's all to gain.

Don't teh Aussies use Celcius too? I thought it was only teh Murikans that used Fahrenheit, along with their other stupid non-decimal measurements.

Yeah I gathered that it was celcius, as 36 degrees Fahrenheit ain't exactly hot

And yes, we do use celcius here, and them damn Murikans use their backward, inferior temperature system, based on the melting point of butter.

The rest of the Australian team looked like they had lost going into the second half. Even the fans were falling asleep until the last few minutes.

They had lost the momentum, but didn't play that badly. The Japanese seemed strangely confident throughout. The fans weren't falling asleep. Remember, Australians love their sport. They were stunned and incredibly anxious, millions on the edges of their seats after that fowl goal. It should have been 3-0 really, as the ref admitted. Of course it would be better to cheer more when things aren't going too well, but the reaction was understandable. Then we had the pivotal substitutions and took firm control again.

The worry now is that four of our players received yellow cards against Japan, including the goal scorers Aloisi and Cahill, so if they play Brazil and get second ones they will be excluded from the Croatia game, which we really have to win. Even if we get to the next round, we'll still get crushed immediately by the Czech Republic, unless Brazil collapses first (no chance). I guess people would be willing to play against Brazil and take the risk of getting thrown off. We'll see what Guus decides to do.

I think I'll watch the replay though, as I've already stuffed up my exams enough watching the WC football.

Yeah, Argentina were awesome. The best thing about them was that they weren't just lobbing balls up to their forwards hoping that they'd get on the end of one, they were *shock horror* passing the ball! Waiting for a chink in the S&M defense, that they exploited nearly every single time.

I feel sorry for Serbia. They didn't really deserve to be beaten like that. Shee-it.

Ah well, we are now through the last 16, along with Argentina. Decent play in the first half, crappy play in the second half, but we made it.

You barely made it, actually. I told you a few months ago that Ivory Coast played some great football, remember?

Anyway i agree with Cruyft that Brazil and Portugal are two great disapointements, but i have to add Holland, same old mistakes all over again, Van Basten needs to shake things up.

Yep, they played much better than they did in the Africa Cup. They barely gave us any space to breathe or play any form of football.

Things won't be shaken up, though, there isn't that much to shake up. Some of the players (Van Bommel) played a very unfortunate match, and Ivory Coast did well in dominating midfield in the second half. Still, we played well for the first half hour or so, but it got too lazy once we were up 2-0, and Ivory Coast managed to really put a lot of pressure on the play.

Cruyft? Is that a mix between Kieft and Cruyff? ;)
Meh, there are more dissappointments here, and I'm hoping that we'll grow in the tournament, like the under-23 team did in France.

...
D'oh. I'm confusing three tournaments. Stupid under-21 with 23-year-olds, and stupid under-19 in France right before that.
But yeah, that's what I meant.

Sorry Quiet, I appreciate your loyalty, but the Australian game would have sank but for Cahill.

Serbia-Mont- got crushed. If the Argentina team continues to play that well, they will be the ones to beat at this tournament. Young and aggressive, very nicely played.

Well, this really boosted our morale up. We had many celebrations yesterday. Even my sister appeared on TV celebrating at the Obelisco.
