Your Favorite Companions

Dead Money companions. Period.

No seriously, their backgrounds and stories are amazing. Sure, they are not regular full-time amigos, but I think they're so well explored, especially if you look on game as a whole (meaning vanilla + DLCs).

That's not to say that companions from vanilla or other DLCs are bad (okay, Honest Hearts could've gone better on that one), but even though I spent much more time with Boone, Cass etc., they didn't remain in such a memory as the aforementioned ones did.

Vanilla game wise, I'd say ED-E and Boone. DLC wise, Dog/God.

I say Boone because he has such a deep, if not depressing, storyline which defines and outlines the consequences of the choices he made. Deciding to shoot his wife for mercy, deciding to listen to orders and fire upon the innocent people escaping Bitter Springs. It really is touchy and sensitive to trend on as a story topic since it's realistic with what most people fighting in any military would have to but up with after their service. The torment he goes through and the mental anguish he's acquired is something he knows he'd have to live with for the rest of his life. I've always been a fan of choice-and-consequence styled sequence, be it storyline or just gameplay. So Boone's a good fit for me in that department... Also ED-E because of his useful traits, including his companion perk. Other than that, he's a really fun companion to have around even if he is just a robot. His Enclave roots also give a little age vibe to him.

Otherwise, Dog/God is probably my favorite DLC companion. Period. I mean, a Night Kin who suffers from schizophrenia to the maximum core that he has a second personality. On one end of the pendulum is a brute who is forced to serve as a slave and a scape goat for physical means. While on the other end is a individual being who wishes to break his chains and escape his boundaries mentally and become what he makes of himself, without others choosing his actions by force. Dog/God defines self vs. self conflict very well and in such a tormented manner that it makes his ending choices vital in the way of how his self decision effects him i.e. his suicide or his 'release'. To be honest, it probably hit me a little harder when I first played though Dead Money. After sequencing everything about him together and freeing him as God, I'd say his story shoulders up to Boone's story, but maybe just a little better in my opinion.

I never really travel with companions. I build myself as the silent assassin/sniper and they usually just blow my cover running off half cocked, especially Boone if he sees anything remotely resembling Legion. IF I have a companion I choose Cass simply because her personality goes with my chain smoking, hard boozing, tough bitch character.

Though I usually travel alone, I have used companions sometimes. I'll list them all, from best to worst (in my opinion).
I think Boone is the best companion in the game. You can get him early on, is a beast with rifles, and his companion perk is extremely powerful.
After that comes ED-E, with his multifunctionality, useful perk, and he's a pretty good fighter.
After that comes Gannon, he's a good fighter, his perk is really useful, and his quest is awesome.
After that comes Veronica, she is a god with a ballistic fist or Pushy, and she has a pretty fun personality.
After that comes Rex. I have never really liked him, though his perk is pretty useful, and he is a good fighter.
After that comes Raul, I never used him that much. His perk is negligible when you have Jury Rigging, and he dies constantly.
After that comes Lily. I never liked her personality, and her perk isn't that good. Also, isn't it ironic that a Nightkin like her always blunders into combat without stealth?
At the bottom of the list is Cass. She is a pain in the ass to get to, her perk is, well, crap, and she isn't that good of a fighter. And then you have the incessant talking...

Veronica has personality going for her. Pity about her preference of those rags, though, or I would have gift her that Vera's Outfit like Cass.

Cass is too silent with this newest patch. She's very useful, especially as I like to chug drinks like there's no tomorrow. A Vera's, Daniel's Hat, a Riot shotgun, and that's complete her outfit.

Only with the loss of Enhanced Sensor do we realize how we depend on that from EDE.

Search and Mark from Rex is nice, dont get me wrong. But his quest is too simple and quick.

Boone's bloodthirstyness is too inconvenient. I park his ass in Novac and just forget about him outside of his personal quest.

Raul is also nice with his quirkiness, but a ghoul? Call me pro-Human. Though his Maintainance perk is certainly useful.

Lily? too simple. I dont even get her on the Jacobtown job.

Arcade? I can tell you his usefulness is very limited what with the abundance of food, drink, and stimpack.

I like Arcade and Raul personally. Getting Raul the Vequaro outfit actually makes him a fairly decent fighter (he completely wiped out the fiends in Vault 3, I didn't even have to take my gun out) and i love Arcade, because, I love Arcade

DLC-wise, possibly ED-E. <SPOILER I never got over his sacrifice at the end :(

.

Alot of hate on raul, i personally like him and the things he say really crack me up. I gave him the best armour and helmet i could buy plus he weilds the ranger sequoia, his vaquero outfit is hilarious tho. I have Ed-e and doing to followers part of his mission makes him kick a**. Neverhad problems with him dying and i get into tough fights. My NCR sniper caracther has boone and ed-e, as a sniper boone helps out a lot but i do have to tell him to wait ofter so he doesn't go beserk. Played with rex and i loved him like a real dog XD, perk is usefull and i have to try the others in another walkthrough.

Vanilla ED-E is all I really need, though Lonesome Road ED-E was kickass.

I kinda liked Veronica and Lily, but I never kept them for long.

I'm thinking I need to start up a new play and grab Arcade as a follower. I think he's the only one besides Raul I've never traveled with or done the personal quest for.

I prefer Veronica, She's close range and I'm long range, so I think it's a good balance. Also means I usually get kills before her.
