Baldur's Gate III

I mean they are the Divine Divinity guys. AKA the only real good approximation of DnD in the last few years with PoE a contender for the title.

Did you mean Divinity 2: Original Sin? I somehow can't see Divine Divinity as a DnD approximation. Maybe a Diablo one?...

Either way... what makes DnD good does not translate very well onto the PC. Obsidian's PoE tried to refurbish the system to better fit the platform, and I think they did a decent enough job, to be honest, although that game was trying to be Baldur's Gate ancestor(which, I believe, games shouldn't try at all.)

D2:OS, on the other hand, had a fantastic presentation and an extremely well done first Act. The rest, however, declined from there. That's it... the game had no competition. The ugly, one-legged hooker is the best when there's nothing else around.

Pathfinder: Kingmaker is way more D&D than all of those clumped together.

It's a pity it's not turn-based, but there is a mod for that anyway.

Im mixed.

Baldurs Gate and Icewind Dale are my favorite traditional fantasy settings ever, yet I hate playing D&D.

I can't stand it. Perhaps if it's more like Divinity, then we might go somewhere.

I love D&D in a tabletop setting. I do not like it when in combat on a PC.

I have to say if there was one Studio which I really like to get a hand on this, it would have been Larian. The last game I played from them, Divinity: Original Sin II was pretty decent even if I thought it was kinda to short and the map to formulaic. It felt the same after the second chapter so to speak, so I hope they will find a way to avoid this feeling of repetition with the next game. But what I really loved was the writing - for the most part. The NPCs and companions felt unique in their approach and answers. Something that I can not say from Bioware these days where it always felt they stopped evolving here after Star Wars Knights of the old Republic. So yeah, I have some hopes that Baldurs Gate 3 will be actually good. Even though all I know about D&D are Baldurs Gate 1 and 2.

Looks interesting though it feels like the game was supposed to be Divinity: Original Sin 3 but has the Baldur's Gate label slapped on it.

Larian's recent games have been fun in terms of challenge and quests (especially with some of the solutions and design) so I'll keep an eye out on it.

Looks interesting. I wonder since you play a character that has an illithid tadpole inserted into their brain that there will be a ticking clock element in the game similar to Fallout 1 and 2.
So far I am impressed and will keep an eye on this one. If I continue to be impressed with more trailers and gameplay footage from Larian I will definitely have this on my to buy list.
One peeve I have is that it seems that you will be limited in what race your character can be given that humans, elves, orcs, half-elves, half-orcs, githyanki and githzerai are the only suitable candidates for cermorphosis. Races like dwarves, gnomes, halflings and I think maybe tieflings and dragonborns are not considered viable hosts to undergo cermorphosis. That is going to limit the player which might anger some players who are fans of those races. As someone who plays quite a lot of the Neverwinter MMO, I think some players will be pissed if they can't play as a tiefling or dragonborn given that those two races are the most popular to play as in that game.

Are the worms basically Khan mind-control worms, or is that the thing that turns you into a tentacle face (same thing)?

(Never played BG)

Oh, it is worse than Khan mind-control worms. It is considered the worst fate one can suffer at the hands of the Mind Flayers. https://forgottenrealms.fandom.com/wiki/Ceremorphosis
It basically turns you into a Mind Flayer after an extremely painful week long process. You end up becoming a Mind Flayer with little to no memories of your past. You go on to serve the Mind Flayer collective which is pretty much a hive mind centered around the community's Elder Brain. Kind of like the Borg.

Well, you can read about the process here : Ceremorphosis.

*Edit

I see. Someone was quicker with the link. Well it can't hurt to post it twice.

Also reading on the wiki, I am curious if there will be Ulitharids and Mindflayerdragons known as Brainstealer Dragons.

Not really. I've been playing D&D IRL for 21 years now and BG3 feels EXACTLY like a D&D session.
People are calling it a reskinned DOS2 because they probably missed to notice DOS2 had taken LOTS of inspiration from D&D. I assume those people haven't played D&D IRL with friends.

Another peeve I have with the game is the lack of classes. So far the confirm classes are Fighter, Ranger, Cleric, Wizard and Warlock. No Paladin, Barbarian or Sorcerer? In Baldur's Gate 1 & 2 and Neverwinter Nights 1 & 2 there are a ton of classes for you to choose from. Larian stated that the game is going to be early access so I hope that they will add more classes into the game down the road.

I'm not dismissing the game like people on BG's subreddit (Btw, don't go there, it's a lot of whining about how different the game is from BG1 and BG2). I have seen how much Larian improved DOS2 from pre-Alpha to the final build so I have cautious optimism that they can improve from there.

I wonder if they will bring in Ilsensine with how involved mind flayers are in the plot. Plus WotC are on-board with this project.

EDIT: Meant to link pre-alpha to the old pre-alpha footage for D:OS 2 instead of double-linking Ilsensine. Whoops :hide:
