Well, you have to consider that many people did not experience that. I, myself, played my first fallout games the year before last (new vegas), and the only other Bethesda game I had played was skyrim at that point. I'm pretty young (20) and didn't start really getting into gaming until relatively late. I saw NV, fell in love, went and played 3, was disappointed, assumed NV was better because "It's a sequal it's to be excepted, right?" At that point I didn't even know it wasn't actually made by Bethesda (in my defense, I didn't really care either way at that poiny). So I thought "Yay, new fallout, and so close to when I discovered it too. This'll be awsome, new skills, improved mechanics, more guns, more story, more explorations, the works!" There were some reservations. "That's wierd, a perk system. Well no reason it can't work." "A dialogue wheel? Why not stick with the box? Would save having to do a 'more options' button."
But, I wan't really that concerned (foolishly perhaps). There was also a lot of cool stuff to look forward to. Building my own base and scavenging, which fits really well mechanically. Upgrading and customizing weapons. Actual half-decent shooting mechanics.
The only doubts started when I started watching the early gameplay stuff. Stuff like the voiced character having a personality of there own. The fact that the wheel never expanded. The extremely simplistic perk chart. No skill checks. And thus began my decent .
