Also erm.. like with Gizmojunk, looks like a lot of people here didn't see the movie yet. You guys okay with spoilers? I've pretty much given away the entire plot in my rant. :confused:
 
Honestly, I don't care about spoilers. I can enjoy stuff even if I know everything. But just to be save, you should give out a fair warning. You can use the quote tags with spoiler instead of quote, and your text won't be visible unless you click on it.

Didn't see it either. I ain't expecting some masterpiece, but hell, the Rey girl, etc... that's hilarious, yet somehow sad...

Anyway, the hyping was strong with all Star Wars, not only this one.
With a well managed interweb, that's funnier.
All those anti-spoiler on Reddit... "that's not cool they've not seen it yet" whatever, more visiblity.

Anyway whatever, the more they hype something, the less interested I am.

I guess there was no way that this Star Wars movie would not be a huge merchendize fanfare. I mean ... com on, no one could have gone in to this movie with such unrealistic expectations and the idea that they would somehow recreate exactly this kind of Star Wars 4 magic. It's simply not the 1970s anymore. Not that I am saying movies with artistic integrity as their primary goal are impossible, even high budged productions. But it is a lot less likely to see them under the Umbrella of corporations like Sonny, Disney, you name it.

So I guess, you have to take it as what it is, and be happy that it's not THAT bad ... I mean ... honestly ... it could have been worse.

In the next movie she will probably outdo Starkiller and juggle several Star Destroyers.

Why do I have a feeling that the audience would have complained if Rey had not been able to pull off all the things she did now, instead gradually learning these things as she progresses in training.
Not to mention some of those militant feminist types.

That would actually be a very interesting concept in my opinion, since we have probably 2 more movies infront of us, there is plenty of room for such an arch. We have yet to actually see something like that, the only character that managed to really redeem himself, with the help of Luke, (SPOIELR!§§$) was Darth Vader. And that was right before his death. We also saw a couple of characters falling eventually to the dark side. But you never see them really coming back. Not even a chance. But Darth Vader has shown that it is possible.

I would welcome a hero who's falling from grace, just to climb up the ladder again after disappointing everyone, saving the day in the third movie.

But I have serious doubts that we will see something like that. I mean it would allow the story to push in a different direction.

First all I would like to say that the movie is far better then Lucas did with the prequels. With that said many of the problems with are because of JJ Abrams, the movie feels very similar to his reboot of start trek. Which is good and bad; Abrams style does fit star wars better, the bad part is it shows Abrams' adhd problem "I need to show cool stuff all the time!" Which means the connection between scenes is tangential at best and many elements don't fit in the internal logic of the universe very well.

This movie is so Fan Fic-y they even have a Yoda wannabe, but it's so poorly paced that she just peeters out of existence on the plot.
 
Oh c'mon, it was fantastic. The rest of the people here must have some pretty high standards for storywriting, because I thought character arcs were pretty damn excellent in this one. So was the overall pacing.

I really enjoyed it. Hey, I'm the unpopular opinion again, whaddaya know. My only single gripe with the film was that it felt too shy to make any unique steps of its own, and ended up feeling like "more of the same" of the original trilogy. Felt too much like it rehashed core plot points and overall tone. But the rest was very good.

I have a feeling this thread is being a bit too pessimistic about how the trilogy is going to go. I mean it feels like Episode IV, but I felt like this was done on purpose.

So was Rey's mastery of numerous skills and why Kylo Ren's actor portrayed him as an angry wannabe kid. In my opinion, it's done with the express purpose of setting it up for the other films. The political undertones were done pretty well without having to force too much backstory into the audience if they didn't want to know about it. If you didn't figure it out, the First Order are basically insurgents, and the Resistance is the army the New Republic is using as a proxy force against the First Order.

All in all, it's a solid film. If the rest of the thread has made you a little bit unsure about seeing it, I say go see it anyways. But I did like Fallout 4 a lot, so my opinion here seems to fall on deaf ears.
 
People keep trying to insist that anyone criticizing Rey is an evil misogynist.

Maybe some people should learn the difference between a Strong character and a Powerful character. Contrary to modern belief they are not neccesarily the same thing, more often than not the strongest characters are the ones with the most limitations to their skills.

I am not pessimistic. I just didn't like the Mary Sue aspect of Rey. I know I keep using that word a lot but that's just how she felt to me.

I didn't dislike Force Awakens, it was pretty good as a new, modern installment in the series. But Mad Max: Fury Road is my movie of 2015.

I really don't care if there are spoilers since the movie sounds like crap and rehashes parts and character types from the original trilogy. Rey sounds just like a Mary Sue unable to fail at anything and take on Darth not-Vader with more training then her.
 
You never get a feeling for Finn's character at the beginning at all. From the beginning he walks differently than the other Storm Troopers and he just kind of decides to betray them on his first scene ever, we don't see him interact with his fellow troopers at all before that and he is pretty giddy about shooting them all dead and even celebrates when a bunch of his old buddies get blown the fuck out by another ship. What kind of cjaracterization is that? Even Anakin flinched a bit before killing the "younglings", the other Troopers display more emotion towards the stiuation than him, and he doesn't even attempt to avoid killing at all, instead that seems to be his go to move.... yet he insists that he didn't want to kill anymore. They could've easily fixed this by making him only kill as a last resort, with him killing the other storm trooper with the lightsaber actually have more emotional impact on the story instead of it just being a pointless vignete.
