Don't Buy the Hype

I posted this on the Gamespot forums about 4 and half hours ago.

The replies its getting are great.

A link, or the full text? If the latter, did you ask Bradylama for permission?

I post from GameFAQs, so it's weird to see that layout. Ahhh, avatars!

Per, I don't think he asked to be asked for permission to repost. I do think that he wanted people to post the .txt instead, though. Hopefully NMA's bandwidth doesn't take a significant hit.

I'm just as guilty as Pariah. I posted a topic with the same link.

I wrote this piece with the intention of it being used for viral anti-marketing. I understand it's probably way too big for that, but the whole argument requires too much evidence. Please, if you like this, repost it on other forums using the .txt file linked at the bottom of this post

I'm assuming that is permission

Hi there first time poster. I just wanted to add something to this article. Its missing the part where Bethesda works with Akella and completely screws up Sea Dogs 2 "aka Pirates Of the Caribbean". (it was on the front cover of the Morrowind CD-Case)

The fans of the game at Pirates Ahoy take the game and make it one of the best games I personally have ever played. I loved it so much that I offered to host their PR ModDB profile. www.potc.moddb.com *plug*

Unfortunately Akella hasn't learned from this and produced Age of Pirates which was a critical flop caused by the Starforce debate, I think it was self published.

After this Bethesda started work on Oblivion. So yeah they have a long reputation of ruining franchises :D (and leaving the fans to pick up their mess)

Uhh...sad article  During reading I've even tried to incorporate RPG Codex phrase to one of my post on beth forums and when it really turned out to be 'i really love oblivion' i was shocked

It'd be a great idea imho, to incorporate Vee response to 'Deconstructing the hype' section, although the article itself would end up as extremely long. But that text from Vee is excelent too...

EDIT:

One more thought.

Companies have this whole PR and marketing stuff, so they can even sell a shit. Why do not they try to sell something good?!? Is it harder than selling a shit???

Haven't posted here for years, but came in from GameFAQs. I knew Bethesda was screwed up, but didn't think it was THAT screwed up.

This article is definitely worth reposting as many places as possible. And I like the citations; it gives the Beth fans less validity to say: "whine whine whine you just b*tch because you think anything not from *fill-in-the-blank* is bad"

Not to say that they still won't, as we see, but but saying it against valid articles just ups the ante for stupidity ESPECIALLY when taken in context.

War is changing.
I don't like it.
I don't think I'll buy Fallout 3 unless it's turn-based.
I'd have to play the demo, but I doubt it'd change my mind.
Sad really.
I like Interplay.
They made two of my favorite games; The Fallout Series and Sacrifice.
They deserve some credit.

I got banned

They(Bethesda forum moderators) suspended my account 'til 2034... at the Bethesda forum. I found out it wasn't ISO view, and freaked out. Well I'm glad people here are keeping it real. I hate Bethesda. I bought a new CPU and video card hoping it would make the game run better and be "more fun". But all it did was make me get sick of it faster. I hope Obsidian creates the spiritual successor! Does anyone share my opinion? Or am I crazy? I like what the parent post said. I wish fallout fans would unite and create its own "fallout". I feel like Bethesda stole all the ideas Black Isle came up with and sold out.

Wouldn't put all your hopes on Obsidian, all their games thus far have been far from stellar. NWN2 & KOTOR have both been 'ok' but overall very linear, railroaded and chokka with abysmal dialogue. Now that could be down to Bioware pulling the strings, but given their current Aliens project is shaping up to be an Action RPG - it doesn't sound too promising. Still at least they treat the fans with respect, and are a lot more approachable.

Agree totally that we as fans should try and do something, though for most of us it's finding the time.. we mostly aren't school kids anymore :(

tim cain

Well I wish Tim Cain would create another great game. Chris "avellone?* works at Obsidian though, and he seems to be a genuine fallout fan. i've NEVER gotten used to the 3D rpgs like NWN, or any game like it. I prefer ISO view, I just want to feel like the level is "moving" and I want that dialog box to tell me what I'm clicking. Its interesting and compelling to discover other things.
Where did Tim Cain go :(. I loved the vampire game they made. I'm at the last level but I seriously had a lot of fun playing it. I hate to say this; I got in trouble for downloading NWN, and I was playing it and starting to enjoy it. So when they sent the automatic letter saying they knew my IP. I told my ISP I bought the game, which I did; but later the bastards on ebay said the warehouse burned down??? don't ask.. thats what they said. Anyhow I plan on buying it, but comparing the story on NWN to Baldurs gate; NWN is a goddamn joke. Baldurs gate 2 was so awesome and I hope they make number 3; but I HOPE its ISO view!

Btw, they banned me from the bethsoft forum because I said to everyone "Fallout 3 is bit torrent material, just another POS". I also said something like "I guess we will find out when I see it on piratebay". Yeah, I'm cynical! I did like to vault picture, not the suit, it looked interesting but god I hate that its FPS. The only game I felt that did a good rpg/fps hybrid was Deus Ex. Deus Ex 2 was very horrible compared to the first one.

I could go on and on about how games are becoming more about selling money than actually sitting down and creating a game using creativity, and not jumping on the bandwagon like "oh look here it has high poly and you can see her nipples through her shirt".
Icewindale looks more beautiful then Oblivon ever could, and I mean that. Icewindale had very stylish art, and to this day it looks amazing. The characters have always looked a TINY bit strange, but all and all it blends very well. I really do like icewindale characters, I can just admit they have a few issues. But I totally prefer the ISO view. You ever played Lion Heart? Yes that game lacked a lot of things, but it was very pretty, and looked like the levels were "moving"(more of a way to describe the realism). With moving parts rotating and the music I thought was pretty cool, had a dark feel to it. The story was alright but what I didn't like it was way to repetitive. I liked all the references to philosophers. Anyways I'm rambling on but I just want a game to pull me in like fallout used to. Theres a number of games I haven't completed because they are no longer fun. I play warcraft 3 and battlefield 2(actively and thats about it for the past 6 months). Its pretty sad. i've beaten fallout tactics 12 times, Deus Ex 14 times, baldurs gate 2 twice, fallout 1 and 2 for years... I cant say how many times I beat it because I get to a point I really like and sort of do my own thing and find interesting things.. but I feel like I've discovered nearly everything. Anyways, Im looking for great unique games that keep you asking for more. Like fallout 2 did to me, fallout 1 had a way cooler story, towns, and I'm sure you heard the rest. Fallout 2 was great too and that "take all" improvement was pretty sweet. I'm a pack rat(this is why I cant play games like oblivion because no matter what I pick up I will always fight monsters with the same level as me, and theres just no point).
I like picking up every item I see and sell it for something else.
Diablo 2 is a pretty horrible game, but all the neat little items you get just make you feel like you won the lottery. But with fallout its totally different, every item is a treasure.. even the pocket lent. I really like the robes for some odd reason, and getting ammo is fuckin' bad ass. Then again Id prefer sneaking bombs in NPC's inventory, or burning something to death with fire or a laser. But also the humor made me laugh so much; I felt like a total nerd.
I used to suck at reading when I was 12, but fallout really helped me out and I enjoyed every day of it.
Now Bethsoft can't offer this (In my very fearful opinion, I know I'm not being optimistic/borderline crazy)!
I do have a lot of respect for all the people here and Ive tried to type posts with somewhat correct grammar considering I'm pretty lazy, but at least I'm NOT sprouting "...gg gg noob , im soz c00l cause I L33T T4LK!"
Please keep in mind, if anything seems to be insanely shocking, try to consider its the other way around, sometimes I really fuck a sentence up. Please bare with me. So I go on!

Excuse my rampant fallout behavior Im just an old school gamer that hasn't had a lot of games to play lately. I think I've about destroyed all the fun in playing Half life 2 because I played it way to much. This will be my last comment: Farcry was VERY sweet at first, but after awhile; all they did to spice up the game to keep it compelling was increase the map size, make triple amount of enemys, and show off how "nex gen it used to look(meaning its old now)". :x

Before Morrowind came out :D They made demos all the time. Then they stopped because they knew that they could trick people into buying their games instead.

Well hello everyone.

After 2 years and over 700 posts I got banned from "edited out" for voicing my opinions why Fallout 3 will not be the game the community wants.

Its good to see that at least NMA isnt getting blinded by the hype.

Excellent post Brady, I was thinking that Bethshita where doing things like those, but never saw such an accurate post. Good work, man.

Yeah this is awesome, must have taken helluva time to assemble all the info.

Im also following your discussion on "youknowwhere", but no argumentation will plug up the amount of idiocy.
