Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim

Not me, I found it boring, but some people like boring games and then convincing themselves they're having fun by playing make-believe.

Right, because everything you find boring is automatically objectively boring for every single person on the planet and those that refuse are lying to themselves.

I will say that the music is pretty freaking good. It's both moody with a little bit of throwback to Morrowind. (just watch the last video) A complete 180 when compared to the crap that was played in the background of Fallout 3. But then again Inon Zur was generic music anyway. As for Jermey Soule? I've been digging his stuff since the Total Annihilation soundtrack.

As expected. Beth's ''new'' footage is all old stuff. It's incredible how they like to troll their fanbase, and how said fanbase is impossibly forgiving of them. Any complaints are dismissed as ''oh, it's pre-alpha!'' regardless of the fact it was released at E3, a few months at most before the game goes gold.

I mean, I will probably buy Skyrim, not day 1 of course but eventually. But, unlike with most games, I will stay the hell out of it's dedicated forums.

well what I really find surprising is how people absolutely hate the Oblivion gates but at the same time feel so much joy about the "Dragons" as like it isn't obvious that those will have more or less the same function in Skyrim like the Oblivion gates in the past game ... generic content. Already now when I am watching those skyrim videos again the fights with those dragons looks like it will be a chore at some point (like closing those gates). Fun for doing it once or twice. But after you killed/closed your 10th Dragon/Gate ...*yawn*

I can only speak for myself and my own experiences.

Life is easier and much more fun that way.

I hate dragons, faires, magical spells and all this crap, HATE IT! I can't stand Lord of the Rings and all that BS Tolkien.
Or D&D, man that thing make me puke.

But I like RPG, the more pos-apoc or scify, the better.
I think that's why I like Arcanum, the mix between magic and science is terrific and very imaginative but without all that "we faires are angelic magic beings" crap.

I think that's why I don't give a flying f*** about Skyrim.

Well the game looks fun enough, I am not a fan of high fantasy (unless it's Dorohedoro, but that is more like Magicpunk or something), but I don't see the big problem with thsi game, it doesn't look like the second coming nor does it look like another Final Fantasy or Dragon Age 2.

Just like every game ever. It's called "Publicity" you know? games don't sell by having "AVERAGE GAME!" on their ads.

Yeah, not to mention that people will usually act like you're crazy for not liking it.

Why, just this morning, I expressed doubts that Skyrim was going to be good and the person's response was basically 'Well, it's by Bethesda'.

Well, I'll wait for the game to be out before I decide whether or not to plunk down the cash.

My friend's favorite game is Oblivion. When I mentioned that this video killed my hype for the game, he exploded with pointless arguments and petty whining. He didn't even give me a chance to explain my reasoning behind my statement. Point is, Beth fans are extremely whiny.

It's not that I think this game won't be good, but there comes a bit of curiosity when a game is all talk but no show. This video, while practically the same footage as before, definitely was more detailed and thorough than previous trailers and was more show than I've seen of any other Beth title during pre-release. The video shed a lot of light and answered many questions. Now that sense of curiosity that builds hype has been extinguished for me, there is really nothing left to keep me excited. I do hope this is a good game, I really do. I loved Morrowind and even got a few shits and giggles from Oblivion.

Skyrim just seems to be doing exactly what Oblivion did by using strong visuals and detail to make up for the lack of deep gameplay. It's impossible for me to play vanillia Oblivion without the impressive FCOM mod package because of that shallowness. I will say that if Skyim can pull off the new character system and especially the perks, it will be more RPG than Oblivion ever hoped to be. However the combat is exactly the same and no fancy spells, left/right hand system, and finishing moves can change that. At this point, I'm completely neutral about it's release.

Why would anyone, who is even remotively interested in good videogames look for Bethesda Games past Daggerfall/Morrowind? It simply baffles me.

Yes, Morrowind was the first and also the last Beth's sandbox game, which I ever tried. I'm definitely not going to buy and play anything else based on this silly concept. (dumb combat system; level scaling which ruined the replay value completely for me; generic and repetitive dungeons; etc.)

well as much as I liked Morrowind I have to admit though that as RPG it was almost as shallow like Oblivion though. Any of the characters could be replaced.

But at least Morrowind tried to give you a feeling of complexity with all the guilds and quests and such. Funny is how past games in the Elder Scrolls franchise have been substantially bigger compared to Morrowind and latter games. There have been enough people which expected a different kind of game.

Not that I am a huge fan of "Sand box games" to say that. But thinking about it Oblivion felt at least much smaller then Morrowind. Probably because I had no reason to explore the world since everything was scaled to your level. It made no sense to get any quest reward either because the sword of prettiness you get on level 5 will be completely useless later in the game. Everything was somehow generated "randomly" based on your level.

But the worst part was the character department and the story telling. And here I have not seen anything yet which tells me that Skyrim will be better. I absolutely hate the quest structure in Oblivion which usually does not go beyond "Kill person A and get me object Z!"

I mean I sure dont expect that a game throws at me always content that would put Planescape to shame. But com on ... at least a few quests which are a bit more then just hackin' and wackin' and smackin ...

*Edit
by the way if you love Oblivion and Bethesda as much as I do (I dont) then this will be funn for you:

Codex Exclusive - Elder Scrolls: Skyrim Interview with Bethesda

Well, I don't know if that interview was for real, but anyway, I agree with Todd this time:
Todd: That's right, it's not where games are going. Games are getting more stream-lined. Lots of skills is complex and people don't like complex systems with like numbers, and maths and stuff -
Pete: Yeah, I hate maths.
Todd: - Especially console gamers. So as developers, we're really taking that trend and opening up new pastures of gaming.
Todd is saying, that the Beth's games are simplified to satisfy even the most unassuming paying customer.

That was one of the few joke interviews that have made me laugh. Good job, codex.
