Fallout: New Vegas quest troubleshooting (spoilers)

I already said that for the purposes of his character, a quest with ANY step that requires unavoidable killing means the entire quest involves killing and he must avoid it.

I never said you couldn't HAVE Veronica, I said her quest necessitated violence. I'm well aware that the majority of the quest is completely pacifistic (you can get the Range Finder rather than the other 2 selections, which involve dangerous treks into Vaults, many of her triggers are dialog-activated or by crossing landmarks, reaching a terminal doesn't involve killing, blah blah), but the confrontation at the end is unavoidable. I didn't specify because ***SPOILERS***, but thanks for ruining it for him...

And at 95, the Speech check- while obviously an available option -is one that's out of reach for most players. But fine, by technical definition, going by an extremely selective approach to her quest, it CAN be completed without any violence. I still object that you had to go ahead and spoil the quest for him...

Woops, sorry, forgot about spoilers.
Her quest has no unavoidable killings and no violence.
How is 95 out of reach for most players, especially those going for pacifist play styles?
Of course it's selective. Every quest is, if you want to play in a certain way.
But it's neither extremely selective nor obscure or anything.

I just hit level 12 and my Speech is already at 65. So I don't think a 95 speech is that far away. So if I were to try the Veronica companion quest, by the time I try it, my Speech skill should be 95 by then.

However, I did experiment by having her in my party and like you said earlier, Slav, even though I told her to hang back and not fight, she fought anyway. And that's just not gonna work for me. :p

So, yeah, I probably just won't recruit any Followers. Though I heard Rex's ability was good for scavenging stuff in the wasteland. Was thinking to recruit him and tell him to wait, as mentioned earlier, so I get his Follower perk without him actually following me. :p

I'm surprised it's so low at such a level. Which skills did you prioritize? Sneak and Lockpick?

I've been evenly-distributing the points between Speech, Sneak, Lockpick and Science. Been throwing a point or two (per level) here and there to Repair, Barter and Survival as well.

ROFL see? That's why I said it was "out of reach for most players"...

There's lots of different ways to play the game, beyond the role playing aspect. How you decide to allocate your points (in what priority, and at what point you set your limits) is one of them. Lots of players will "evenly" distribute skill points as they level, so while their focused skills are higher than their ignored skills, for example Speech over Explosives, they're never exaggeratedly disproportionate; like 80 vs 15 at level 5, for example. In some senses, it IS best to max a skill ASAP, and plenty players do that, but you lose the benefits of magazines, skill books, perks, and skill-boosting equipment. Thus why so many players will halt increasing their skills at the mid 60-70 range. A select few challenges and skill checks will bar their way, which they just return to later once they completely min/max their character.

It's that there's so many different kinds of players, and many that do just that, which is why I said passing that 95 Speech Check was something "out of reach to most". Clearly, still AVAILABLE, and possible, so I amend my statement that Veronica is indeed a character whose quest can be completed without any bloodshed. However, she's still VERY difficult to have around, due to her berserker rampaging tendencies...... XD

But by the time I would be ready to do Veronica's quest (not that I'm every going to in this playthrough) I would easily have Speech raised that high.

Right. Which is why I'm not recruiting her. :p

Also, like I said previously, I won't be recruiting any Followers on this playthrough probably. I might recruit Rex just to tell him to Wait so I can get his Follower Perk without him actually following me. But we'll see.

Mind if I suggest you NOT raise it beyond the 70s or 80s? There's an outfit that increases Speech by 10 and LK by 1 (so you can get a total of +11 Speech), and a Hat that increases Speech by 5, so unless you've collected EVERY Speech skill book, you wouldn't want your Speech to exceed 85.

I've never left any companion unattended for so far that they were left in one location on the map for an ENTIRE game, but theoretically it should work. It's just a shame you can't recruit Boone without having someone die from the onset, because his Perk is arguably the most useful in the game, and if you could "abuse" it just like you're planning on Rex's, that would make for quite and interesting character (and simplify avoiding combat).

I can recruit Boone. I did that quest. Technical Pacifist and all that. *shrug*

I felt bad, but the bitch deserved it apparently. :p

When you say "that would make for quite an interesting character", do you mean from Rex's perk or Boone's perk? Because to use Boone's perk I think I have to be looking down a scope or something and I have no weapons on me except for what I take back to a town to sell.

And in regards to that, I think my first Implant will be the one to increase my strength. Kind of sick of the low weight capacity. :p

No, it functions identically to Rex's; all you need to do is zoom (right click). It doesn't matter if you're holding a rifle with a scope, a weapon with no scope, a knife, a set of binoculars, or nothing at all, you "zoom" when you right click. That action is what activates Boone's and Rex's Perks.

Also I can't help but chuckle about "low weight capacity". One of the things I love about J.E. Sawyer's Mod (well, not having played it, yet, but taken from the readme) is that it deducts 100 carry weight, because it was sorely needed. The weight capacities in FO3 and FONV are obscenely unrealistic, and even if you surpass them, the Overburdened state doesn't hinder you much (especially in NV) at all!

It hasn't been a problem until I needed to get all those parts to fix the McCarran Food Processor thingie. Some of those components are heavy. :p

Even hoarding hundreds of misc items and plants and what have you, there's always weight to spare. Even more so for a character like yours who's carrying very few bulky items, because "Pack Rat" essentially doubles your carry weight (and that Perk is practically a MUST). Also lots of instances of "needing items" for things like the Camp McCarran Food Processor are pointless because high enough Repair supercedes the necessity of any parts at all!

I need an 80 repair and it's currently 40. Will take a while for my Repair skill to hit even 60 which would effectively be 80 combined with a Skill Magazine. So I kind of want to finish the quest before that. Anyway, I'm storing the parts at the NCR Safehouse for the time being. (and a bunch of other stuff)

Also, Purified Water weighs a pound each. And I have over 20 of them on me. That's a lot. Plus the Chinese Stealth Armor is 20 pounds. It adds up pretty quickly.

And Pack Rat's not available until I have a Barter of 70. My Barter is currently 35.

EDIT: Did I mention I'm playing on Hardcore Mode? I assumed that was a given, but just in case, I'm mentioning it now. :p

EDIT^2: Just got my first look at Deathclaws. Does the Animal Friend perk work with them? :p

If Hardcore mode wasn't a given for you, I'd assume we'd have to go through some sort of ritualistic banishment procedure for your mockery of and heinous disrespect toward the Gods. XD

I suppose carry weight CAN be an issue for first-time players, but there's lots of ways you can circumvent carrying everything you have on your person. Utilizing the Mojave Express Dropboxes to "store" items for you is an important suggestion, if you haven't considered it yourself. The most important Dropboxes are the Novac, Freeside, and Strip locations, because of how often you visit these particular areas. You literally can take most of any particular stack of item (unless you use them regularly, in which case you just take some of it) and ship them to a location you'll be visiting later, so if you should be running low on any of those items, you can just pick it up at that spot. It's mildly tedious, but when you're traveling the Mojave with no more than 60 lbs at any given time, you overlook the minute "inconvenience" for the massive convenience you've dealt yourself.

There's also storing (stockpiling) items in any one of the multiple safehouses you accumulate over the game. You can leave them at your room in Novac, or the guest rooms at the Lucky 38, Tops, or Ultra Lux, or even the faction-specific safehouses. Of course for the Courier on-the-go, that sedentary decision might not be the most appealing.

Whatever works best for you. =)

This I disagree with. Speech is probably the one skill that you have to max if you interested in diplomacy, unless you plan to go the whole game wearing pajamas (zero defence). There are a few times where, if you don't know it in advance, dialogues will start and if you don't have right then and there the Speech skill needed you are screwed. He won't die if he "wastes" 15-20 points.

No, but it's just a suggestion from a min/max player that focuses on min/maxing. Different strokes, that's all.

So I went to Black Mountain and rescued Raul. That was fun. Was a pain to sneak past that Nightkin on the tower, but eventually luck was with me. Snuck in the back and fixed Rhonda, etc. etc. Anyway, now that Raul is with me, I'm doing what he suggested and using him as a pack brahmin to store all these components to fix the food processor. Figured I'd search around the outskirts of New Vegas for the parts, then once I got them all, go back to fix the processor and then get rid of him as I can't bring myself to steal while he's around due to role-playing issues. :p

So, while searching around, I got the Hard Luck Blues quest added to my quest log. I assume this is one I can't finish without killing anything right as it takes me to Vault 34 which is full of feral ghouls. Am I right in my assumption?

That mission is basically fighting your way through bunches of annoying ferals, so yeah. You won't miss anything by skipping it.

LOL @ this line of dialogue from Raul after I tell him to "Wait Here":

"Sure boss. I'll just wait here, alone, while my heavily-armed companion goes out of earshot."

I have no weapons. :p

EDIT: Meh, had to use a Stealth Boy to get past the turrents in the H&H Tool Factory. :(

EDIT^2: Bleed Me Dry doesn't seem possible without killing creatures. Pity. I'd like Red Lucy to "reward me for my services". ah yeah.
