Hard Reset (Wooz's game) revealed

This is what I posted at the Steam forums...

Hit Ctrl and ~ to bring down the command console

Type: pp_enable 0

Hit Ctrl+~ again to close the console. You'll immediately notice other arguably annoying post-processing effects are also turned off. Personally, I think this is the way to go and the game looks better.

Also, using the "save" command in the console makes a save point wherever you're standing. Bind it to a key and you have a fully functioning quicksave option. That should be a really easy thing to implement in the control menu and seems to be the biggest thing people are bitching about.

Interview with Carlos Castañón, concept artist of Flying Wild Hog:

--------

Flying Wild Hog confirmed that the full version will have a toned down sprinting blur and an option to change the FOV and an option to shorten the menu animations.

A developer that releases a demo, listens to the criticism of (potential) fans and adjusts the final version of the game.

:ok:

I assume that is the Woozon himself? Or are there multiple concept-artists at Flying Wild Hog with Mexican roots?

That's Wooz, yeah.

The interview isn't super-useful, since the dude's asking a concept artist about, well, a lot of non-concept art stuff.

Well I am downloading the demo off steam.
I don't know if I will be able to buy it soon, I have a very limited budget to buy games.

So, the game should be unlocked now, but it isn't. I have "hardreset" listed but can't download it, and when I go to the store page it doesn't remember I already bought Hard Reset.

Steam flubbing yet another release. What a piece of crap it's been for some time now.

It is ok now - restart Steam and see that it is now called Hard Reset.

Downloading now.

EDIT:

Wow ... This game is pretty :)

My computer cannot run Deus Ex :HR on minimum, but I can run this baby on maximum settings and it is beautiful.

I love the visual style.

Hey, Wooz - the cartoons in between missions ... Your doing? They are very cool.

I also like the commercials, the flying ships, the posters etc.

I quite like the sound so far too (not the shooting etc, but the little details in the background.)

As a concept artist Wooz, you should be proud; it looks nice indeed. I do not think this game will turn out to be the worst to have on your résumé. :)

Nyet, they're Jarek Krawczyk's. Wouldn't have been able to do concept art and cartoon scenes at the same time...

Thanks for the kind words, and hope you'll enjoy playing it. It's by no means perfect and has gaping flaws, but eh. It's a start.

I'm halfway through now and it's very impressive for a debut title. Graphics are amazing, the setting is great, it runs smoothly and feels right. Unfortunately, it is way too restrictive. Levels are very narrow and loaded with invisible walls in the most ridiculous places. I can understand the level designers did this to prevent people from breaking scripted events or going outside the maps, but it removes any sense of randomness for possible replays. Yeah, you can go back and use different weapon upgrades, but you will follow the same exact path and fight the same exact battles with the same music letting you know when they are coming at the same places. Also, the 3 second sprinting sucks ass and needs the added ability to jump. Weird design decision there, and the only reasoning I can think of doing so was another way to prevent people from going outside the map.

Unless somebody really loves Blade Runner and is dying to run around in that world for several hours, I cannot recommend this game over something like Painkiller. You can get it for $10 (1/3 the price of Hard Reset) and does everything much better. With a price drop and some significant free addons I might reconsider.

In short: good game, not bad, but will be forgotten in a month unless you do some serious post-release support with addons and editors.

Not a PC gamer but congratulations on the good reviews Wooz. I hope your team goes on to make more good stuff in the future :)

Hey Torgul!

That is so not true! We were stating several times, that we estimate the game lenght for a casual player between 8-10 hours and for a hardcore gamer that finished all the dooms and quakes for about 7-8.

Odd estimates. I'm far from a hardcore shooter gamer but I finished it in 6 hours. Unless Steam mislogged, but Steam says 5.9 hours. Normal difficulty, finding about half the secrets along the way.

26 of 80 achievements unlocked! Man that's a lot of achievements. A lot of tiered ones for hard and insane I couldn't get, obviously.

The game has received quite a lot of positive reaction world wide. Does that mean there will sequel and will it be longer?

The good:
  • Art direction in general. From the looks & feel of the buildings, to the publicity, the 'motivational' posters / propaganda,...
  • The graphic novel cutscenes are nice & refreshing, while dark and moody.
  • Pop culture influences. Some influence from stuff like Blade Runner is really clear.
  • The 'small' things, hidden jokes, references, etc throughout the game
  • Total and absolute carnage. Almost everything blows up.
  • If you liked Painkiller, chances are you'll love this.
  • While somewhat boring at first, there are some very interesting weapons to exploit in this game.

The bad:
  • I finished the game in 4 hours on Normal and died 5 times. Two times from the metro. :P I found 2/3rd of the 'secrets' on this first playthrough.
  • The boss battles are in themselves "OK", but there's really nothing special going on there. Shooting pieces off a big boss, while every now & again fending off smaller mobs. Just take cover and shoot, mostly.
  • Did I mention it's a short game?
  • The ending doesn't feel like an ending at all. It offers no closure whatsoever. You don't really feel like you did anything epic and the game doesn't really prepare you for the fact that it was the final boss you just killed.
  • Short.
  • All in all, there's no real need for advanced strategies in dealing with enemies. Replayability is thus fairly low.
  • Too short.
  • Feels like a huge waste of the nice art resources and some of the nice gameplay ideas. It rarely "rises above" as it were. There seems to be a disconnect between the quality of art & setting and the somewhat limited gameplay & game depth.

PS: the coolest dev studio logo/intro in 10 years imo:

Wooz, tell them this game needs a Killing Floor style coop BADLY. Make a dozen large arena style maps, robots attack in waves and keep getting tougher every round, in between rounds you buy upgrades at the store with the xp picked up from killing everything.

Hard Reset reviewed by Norway's leading gaming site www.gamer.no

7/10

They like the graphics, and the Blade Runeer vibe, and they are impressed by how well it handles.

They like that it is pure PC, pure singleplayer, and a visit to the shooters of old.

They like that it is chaotic at times, and then more calm in between fights (for exploring)

They do not like:
- No quick save / quick load
- Too unbalanced difficulty - and if you ever decide to make the game easier by lowering the difficulty it does not let you make it harder again by raising the difficulty afterwards; if you lower it it stays low for the rest of the game.
- a bit surprising and abrupt ending - the journalist thought he was maybe halfway when the game suddenly ended
- a bit too slow changing between weapons and weapon modes
