Is anybody else sick of the Mario franchise?

I mean seriously, they've pumped so much out of this bloated character. I can see the future: Super Mario 100, where yet again you have to save the princess, like she already hasn't learned her lesson not to allow herself to be kidnapped. Not to mention the long list of terrible sports games they've brought out :P

Does anybody else think the franchise is dead?
 
No. Mario is far from dead.

Mario has always been about gameplay. The story doesn't really matter much. Many of those sports games were actually pretty fun. Super Mario Galaxy was way different than any Mario game before it, and they have continued to bring fresh concepts to the series. Sure, they whore Mario out, just like they do Link, and Samus, but that is really all Nintendo has to work with. I think Super Mario RPG is still one of my favorites. It even had a pretty good story to go along with it.
 
Pretty much.

For a franchise that got its start by creating a character around the concept of jumping, Mario games are still really damn fun.

It goes to show that design trumps all.
 
The story and universe was never that important for the Mario games to begin with, it always served more as a backdrop than to help the game along the way.

The RPGs tried to do some more focus on story telling and expanding the setting but the Mario universe was never one of political complexities and deep history.
Focus was always more on the gameplay.

What I do think is a problem with Nintendo is that they never tried to establish more IPs over the years.
 
what about Mega Men? Sonic? As like those kind of games need a story at all.

Last time people asked for a story in a Sonic game we got Sonic The Hedgehog 2006... Never again.
 
I've always hated Mario, even in the original Donkey Kong. And I hate the way these unimaginative companies just milk the same shit year after year. Just look at this list and weep...

Yeah, and many of those games were pretty enjoyable. Some were even educational. Most of those "Mario" games weren't even Mario games either. .Pixote listed several games numerous times. That list could be cut in half if it was edited properly.
 
That list counts every cameo appearance of Mario as well.

Because you know, a company putting it's most famous character in it's other products counts as an entry into that particular saga.
 
I like the Mario franchise. Most of the main Mario releases improve something or creates a new experience. I like all the plataformer games, and I specially loved the Paper Mario games. I don't particularly like the Sports games, I just ignore them.

The Franchise I am sick of is the Zelda series, they take their sweet ass time with each game but all of them are basically the same game wrapped up in a new colored tin foil, all of them have exactly the same game desing flaws, like they couldn't even fix that in their 10+ years of releasing them. And the fandom makes it all worse because they love to declare Zelda as the BEST THING EVUUUUUR!

I liked Wind Waker, after that it all went downhill, they just started embracing the "add gimmick don't fix anything" formula for every single Zelda game. Twilight Princess was the worst of the bunch.
 
I like Mario. As stated above, it's still fun to play. Same reason I think Pac-Man is awesome (still fun to play).

As for Zelda, most Zelda fans are nostalgia whores and whatever happens to be the first Zelda game they played will always be "the best". I played them all since the first one (gold cart FTW) but I've always liked ALttP the best. 3d Zelda's never really did it for me.

You are still looking at an average of 5-6 games with a playable Mario per year. We are only in May and there are already 5 games with a playable Mario in it.
 
I don't even remember what the last Mario game was that I played, let alone a Nintendo game. I remember that I raged pretty hard how shitty the 3d Platformers were. Fuck 3d ;). Thank god we have Super Mario Land and the likes.

Basically. Nintendo seems to have zero imagination when it comes to new characters and games. Mario has been a shameless cash cow ever since he got off SNES.

Which ones? Because I enjoyed a few of them. I hated Super Mario Sunshine, but Super Mario 64, and Super Mario Galaxy rocked. I think Sunshine was one of the lesser quality core titles in the series.
 
I didn't own a Gamecube, but the N64 - so it was Mario 64. ;) I don't know, it wasn't fun for me.
