When they took away the Turn-Based element it stopped being Fallout. Instead now to play you need a hyper-gyrex speed laser mouse 3000 and a crate of power-drinks.
Take away turn based and the SPECIAL system (<3) is just a side note you can easily ignore. I have no doubt Beth is doing a fine job at trying to make this have some sort of RPG elements. I reserve judgement but I imagine they will be shallow and simplistic roles but roles all the same.
Without the turn based though there is no point having a SPECIAL system other than to restric how much you can use your pistol-owning skills to back hand anything that doesnt come up with a little green "friendly" cursor.
The monsters too I mean oh my word. What were you thinking? Craptics turned super mutants into Dragon-Ball Z styled super tards and I didnt think it could get any worse, but no! Beth have found a way. Giant ogre super mutants with no minds of their own who have been given enchanted skull trousers from the wizards who live in the giant nuclear bomb dropping helium blimp.
Having nukes every ten steps is just... well I cant even fathom why anyone would think that would be cool. "Oh, its just another nuclear explosion... I'll just wait for it to die down anddd... There we go I can continue through this car park now."
Having a town built around a nuclear bomb... people didnt suddenly turn into cardboard cut outs with moving parts after the war. You think somone would build a TOWN around a nuke? Even if they didnt know it was a nuke its a bomb. Perhaps if the bomb was buried under the town or somthing of that nature then fine, but they pray to it FFS. - Oh wait, it reminds me of thinging... what was that game again? Oh yes, Craptics.
At the end of the day beth is going to have to drop the whole "make it look pretty and have lots of explosions" idea and start putting some depth into the game if they want it to even scratch Fallouts treadmarks. That said, I am greatful to them for actually carrying on the name and not letting the game die off into oblivion (no punn inteded). It wont be Fallout BUT I'd say if your reading this theres a 95% chance you completly intend to go out and buy this game when its released. I know I am.
This, perhaps, is why Beth is scorching Fallout's name so badly? USD's? I think its a fair bet.
Like I said though, I reserve most judgement for when I get to sit down and play the game.
I seem to be the only one that thinks having a cult that worships a unexploded nuclear bomb is just the kind of crazy that fallout franchise has, and I think it fits in well.
