Obsidian's Project Eternity

And they will get money from it even in the future, not just as long as they are working on the game. So if Project Eternity gets done, it can still make money for them even in 10 years.

Salary? I doubt there's any difference, they're under continuing contracts anyway. Individual salary should be the same.

Bonus structure and how much money the developing house as a whole gets is better for Kickstarter, obviously. But base salary? Hmmm.

Don't get me wrong, I backed without even reading the Kickstarter - it's Obsidian making a game they want to make, so i have faith.

I just think they firstly need to say what makes the setting appealing to them - why have they chosen, so far, generic-sounding fantasy, what's going to make that special? They are not constrained by publishers, so they've actively chosen this setting as something more appealing over something more immediately unique (Eg. Planescape). I want to know why, though.

Secondly, the tiers are not so great at the level I am looking to pledge. I would have given more than $35 if there had been something there for me (I'm an international customer).

Thirdly, IMO RTwP was never a fun combat system. I remember the debates and arguments in the Black Isle days about RTwP - the 'hardcore' wanted turnbased combat in their games and saw RTwP as a concession to publisher demands. Fallout: Tactics was heavily criticised for introducing a real-time option.

Anyway - the bottom line is this is a game Obsidian want to make, so I'm backing Obsidian, rather than the game, at the moment. No excuses allowed if it's not great - this game will define Obsidian, for me.

Feargus: When we looked at whether to go the Icewind Dale route or the Torment / Baldur’s Gate route, we felt the latter tied much better into the focus we are going to put into the story and character development. We want the central character to be one that players will hopefully not just play through Project Eternity with, but into sequels as well. Like Torment and Baldur’s Gate, players will find companions to join their party – crafted by the incredible talents of Chris Avellone and Josh Sawyer. When it comes to how they will improve – that is something we are still considering and would love to hear what fans out there think. We invite anyone that is interested to come on over to our forums at http://forums.obsidian.net.

I've never replayed the Icewind Dales because of that fact; Companion interaction is essential for me. I like balancing their personalities, along with their strengths and weaknesses. Icewind Dale just had me creating characters I didn't care for, other than maxing their potential for whatever class(es) they were. I guess I'm not a very good character author :(
NPC interaction with party members and companion quests seem to be integral to a great RPG.

Jeez, this thing is moving fast.
I looked away for 10 minutes and BAM! they got another 30K.

I put in $160 for the box and goodies (and shipping of course).
Probably wouldn't have if it wasn't my birthday next month. Hopefully I can recover some of the money from generous relatives then. :look:

I gave in $280 dollar now. That's just 214 euro, thanks to the weak dollar. :>

I'm not super happy about RTwP, but I'm still very excited about it. I think one of the reasons Obsidian struggled so far is that they desperately tried to adapt to the modern gaming landscape but focused on stuff that mainstream doesn't really care about, and this sounds like the kind of project they really should have been working on since the beginning.

Wasteland 2, The Banner Saga, Shadowrun Returns, Project Eternity, just to cite Kickstarters, plus Chaos Chronicles, Divinity: Original Sin, Age of Decadence (ahahahah, no really, it will eventually come out)... the future is promising for old-school RPGs. Now I just have to hope that stuff actually delivers.

Judging by the rate at which funds are coming in.. We're good. My hope is that the funding surpasses Double Fine's kickstarter, to show crowd funding isn't just a fad that's slowly dying.

I don't know why i have a bad feeling about KS , it just seems too good to be true.

We'll know for certain once W2 and Eternity get released...

They will use light graphics for Eternity, like those of wasteland 2, right?

Hot damn, 450 000$ already, and the day's not over. Wouldn't be surprised if they reach 3 or 4 millions. I'm going to contribute come next Thursday. I missed out on Wasteland 2, but not this time. Probably the 65$ version, I'm still too poor to afford anything else, but I'd like a boxed version.

That's 200$ down the pipes...

Also funfact, rumours are that thw 2 10k Pledgers are Vin Dizel and Notch.

Yeah leave it up to Notch to make the perspective of playing PnP with Tim Cain not very exciting.... asshole.

Not a lot more people have 10 grands to throw at what remains a video game, I'd wager. Albeit I'd probably pay to see a pen and paper game between Avellone, Sawyer, Cain and Vin Diezel.
