Obsidian's Project Eternity

That's 200$ down the pipes...

Also funfact, rumours are that thw 2 10k Pledgers are Vin Dizel and Notch.

Yeah leave it up to Notch to make the perspective of playing PnP with Tim Cain not very exciting.... asshole.
I know Notch sounds likely, but Vin Diesel? I know he's a huge nerd, but what makes people think he donated?

Enjoying the "RTwP is terrible" posts at RPGCodex too much. Wish my account confirmation email would arrive so I join in.

They can't be seriously whining about that in the face of such an announcement?

Since noon, CST. ~6 hours now. Besides the whole fantasy setting, many things are steadily heading towards my "best case scenario" marks:

✓ Kickstarter/Huge amount of financial support
✓ Original IP
✓ Emphasis on mature storytelling
✓ Key personnel involved
✓ Isometric viewpoint
✓ Character creation, as opposed to party creation
✓ Tim Cain is developing a gay accent
✓ I don't suffer from ED

Heh.

Really liking what I read so far, after initial doubts ( ofcourse :8 )

I didn't mind the RTwP in the Infinity Engine this much and thought the Icewind Dale Games were goddamn fun to play. Liking that this might the first AAA ( ???) game for years that uses prerendered 2d Graphics. I am a bit burned out on fantasy settings, but it always depends on the writing. No Party creation is a bummer. :(

This game will bring in 4 million IMO, and why not, we need more games like these. I can't wait. :P

They already have more than 50% and the first day isn't even over. I wonder if they will be able to get more than Double Fine Adventure.

Seriously not interested in real time with pause combat. For me it killed any enjoyability of Baldur's Gate 1+2 and Planescape Torment. If other people like it, fine. Yeah you can setup scripts and have it automatically pause for a billion things but it's nowhere near true turnbased. Not for me. Pass. Maybe after it's out I'll check. But this is not something I'm a fan enough to pledge money on good faith.

I'm not even gonna begin to point out the hypocrisy all over the place since today's reveal. It should be obvious.

Why all the obsession with turn base?

Can anyone explain it? Seems more like a retro whim to me.

It's slow and tedious in a party based game.

You would understand better if you had ever played a PnP RPG. I can get into a long drawn out discussion explaining all the pros and cons for both, but it's pointless and I honestly don't care to repeat a conversation I already had countless times in the past.

When has Obsidian or BIS games' combat ever been about meticulously assigning actions to your numerous party members in turn-based combat? Expecting PnP or Sir-Tech combat in an Obsidian product is shortsighted at best. When I play an Obsidian game, I'm expecting good dialogue and a nice range of choices and consequences. Not 35 minute long combat sequences.
That said, if you simply couldn't enjoy Planescape: Torment or Baldur's Gate or Icewind Dale.. Bummer man. That's a bummer.

Torment was really damaged by the game's lousy combat. I think the combat system basically holds the game back from being the best CRPG ever.

So low resolution, not scalable, inflexible and occupying gigabytes of space with frames? Wake up. 3D is more cost effective, flexible and looks just as good as 2D. Hell, everything in Fallout/Fallout 2/Baldur's Gate/Planescape: Torment/Icewind Dale/pretty-much-every-larger-"2D"-game-made-after-inventing-3D-modelling-software was created, as you admit, as a 3D model and only then stored as 2D sprites. Why you insist on using an inferior storage medium instead of using the source model is beyond me.

Have you played Eschalon books, Tagaziel? It's recently published game with 2D graphics, which looks much better than any modern 3D title. Also, its few hundred megabytes installation package and lightning fast loading times are more pleasible, than any clumpy multigigabyte monster.

But the backgrounds still look nice today. Best would be 3d models with 2D backgrounds.

I kid you not, I'm really afraid of another Dragon Age.
Just a personal preference, I guess.
