Pope Resigns, World Cares (Not)

Lets be honest, he got caught fingering little boys and decided to resign into a secluded villa somewhere while everyone finds out, meanwhile he will be safe from all the contrversey/legal issues due to isolation/being chosen by God. Even though he was chosen by his peers. And he had to step down due to illness. Even though he is Gods earthly representative. Surley God would give him the stre- oh fuck it.

I wonder if the church has the balls to go outside of europe this time.

Now, I'm not expecting a black pope (say Desmond Tutu), but I think there might be some room for a very white looking south-american perhaps?

That said, if I had to gamble, I'd go with Italian.

Oh, not the argentine bishop, please. As a fellow argie I would be ashamed if he was to be elected. As far as I know he is probably more conservative than Ratzinger was.

Just to demonstrate just how much people are predicting who the possible Papabile are, here's a few:

João Braz de Aviz: A Brazilian, Prefect of Congregation for Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life. Generally a conservative, has made some roundabout criticisms of left-wing liberation theology and the Second Vatican Council (the great conclave in The Sixties that modernized the Church). Was shot several times, including in the face, during a robbery he stumbled into.

Timothy M. Dolan: An American, Cardinal-Archbishop of New York. Conservative. Publicly rebuked Joe Biden and Nancy Pelosi for espousing non-Catholic views on abortion. Recently prominent in the USA fighting the contraception mandate.

Marc Oellet: Canadian, Prefect of the Congregation for Bishops. Has criticized secularization of Europe, calling it a "genuine crisis". Believes that the Second Vatican Council has been interpreted far to liberally, and says that abortion is never justifiable, even in cases of rape. He has also offered a public apology for, pre-1960, the Church's "anti-Semitism, racism, indifference to First Nations and discrimination against women and homosexuals."

Odilo Scherer: Brazilian, Cardinal-Archbishop of Sao Paulo. Considered theologically moderate. Criticizes liberation theology's use of Marxism as analysis, but supports its efforts against poverty and social injustice. Against abortion in all cases.

Luis Antonia Tagle: Filipino, Cardinal-Archbishop of Manila. Has spoken of the need for an attitude of humility from the church. Has said that the Second Vatican Council was a "rupture" with the past. Theologically fairly conservative, he opposes contraception and abortion, and led opposition to their availability in the Philippines. Has made great efforts against poverty in that country.

Peter Turkson: Ghanaian, President of the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace. Has spoken of the need for reform of the international financial system, and against the provision of condoms in Africa, though not in all circumstances. A favourite, he would be the first Black pope (though not the first African - that was the North African Victor I, in 189.AD)

Angelo Scola: Italian, Cardinal-Archbishop of Milan. A generally unassuming theologian and figure (at least according to TOW), he was nevertheless papabile at the last conclave. Some Cardinals vigorously advanced him as a candidate because they felt he was the only person able to halt the decline of European Culture.

Christoph Schoenborn: Austrian, Cardinal-Archbishop of Vienna. Spoke against priestly celibacy in the aftermath of the sex abuse scandal, and was required to obtain "clarification" from Rome in response. Has also criticized Cardinal Angelo Sodano for indirectly blocking attempts to get a Cardinal investigated for sex abuse. Has also said that condoms can sometimes be a "lesser evil".

Agostino Vallini: Italian, Vicar General of Rome. The VG is always seen as a Papabile, none have ever been selected.

Please, not this clown. He's embarassed himself more times than I care to count. He's basically Ratzinger Jr, except without the intellectual background. If the Church wants to put on a better face, he's the very last guy they need.

Then again, I'm not expecting much wisdom from them. The Church really, really needs to take a good look at itself and change some things. Good luck convincing that bunch of old farts to actually do it. They will probably elect some European and praise the Lord when he follows the line like a good guy.

From DevilTakeMe's summary, Christoph Schoenborn sounds like a good choice and Peter Turkson sounds fine. Schoenborn sounds like he might try to modernize the church more and at least clean it up. Turkson sounds like he's where the church was when JP II died.

Most of these guys sound hideously reactive and conservative. Fat chance of a guy without his head up his arse getting elected.

My idealistic and completely divorced from reality wishes about the pope:

- Takes the church out of the bedroom and stops rambling about sex, especially abortion and contraception. Preferably after he reads the Old Testament again and takes into account that the good book advocates rape, mass murder, incest, deception, and a variety of other fun passtimes.

- Stops blabbing about the "decline of European Culture." Honestly, it's just a weasel term for "you are not listening to me!"

- Cooperates with civil authorities to pursue and prosecute priests breaking laws (not only pedophiles, but also fraudulent bastards etc.)

- Isn't a smug, arrogant asshole convinced of his monopoly on Truth and Moral Correctness, like every pope before him.

Fat chance, I know. But a man can dream!

All of them sound like douchebags.
they are high ranking church members. Of course they are douchebags. Thats kinda like a requirement.

Thing is, I don't have a problem with the catholic church, there are a lot of priests and workers in different organizations like caritas which do outsanding work and many work even for free without this "we have to make them christian" feeling.

But the higher you go inside the church the more it starts to stink.

People still care what the church does/says?

Yes. Gays around the world, for example, and especially those in Uganda have great opinions about what the church says :I
