PSM3 Fallout 3 hands-on preview

That's just assinine to say the existance of horses would make the game feel like a fantasy game. But then like assholes everyone has their own opinion.
Game-wise, riding a horse tends to carry a certain amount of fantasy-setting baggage in my mind, yes. You just don't see horses very often outside of fantasy-settings, is the most likely reason. Also, I didn't mean to suggest that the inclusion of horses would make it indistinguishable from a fantasy setting while in the middle of a wasteland while playing a character with a rifle slung on his back, as that's obviously foolish. However, I still believe that, if the horses from Oblivion were simply thrown in, they would be distinctly out-of-place, feeling like a throw-away from some generic fantasy game. As I previously stated, I think that horses would make perfect sense in a PA setting, even in the Fallout universe. The East Coast setting would also help since the apparent lack of horses on the West Coast could be readily explained to be a result of all sorts of circumstances.

All I meant to say was that I don't think Bethesda could pull off horses in FINO3 in a manner that wouldn't scream "we already had these horse models/animations so we figured why not go ahead and reuse them!"

Hell, you might hear twelve year olds at Walmart talking about how sweet Fallout 3 looks,

Can't wait to hear some semi-conscious 12 year olds telling me how awesome Fallout 3 is, just like they tell me how awesome Heroes 5 is. After all, it looks "graet" doesn't it?

Yeah, seriously, this is what I always wanted for Fallout... mass-market appeal. That's a guarantee for a good game.

Speaking of that; I was playing TF2 the night D3 was announced, and somehow Fo3 got brought up. To my shock, almost everyone there said they thought it looked awesome, and were going to buy it.

I asked if any of them had played Fallout/2 before... and got a resounding no (Well one person claimed that they watched a friend play the demo). Even "Oblivion with guns" came into the conversation, and they thought that sounded awesome.

Yeah...I'm only 22 years old, but these guys make me feel old as fuck...We are probably too old to understand the awesomeness that is Oblivion and the uber-pwnage that is Fallout 3.

Actually, I can somehow understand where they are bringing this poor licence. As I see it, they just decided to go for the coolz and the pwnz and to leave the canon, depth and coherence behind. Fallout 3 will probably be an enjoyable experience for those who didn't play the two first episodes intensely and for those who never read anything at the Vault Wiki because they won't be able to understand why orcs, the fatman, Dj Dawg etc aren't ok.

If the new Fallout is successful it'll most likely go the same way as TES. Each new iteration will bring a new fanbase and the old fans will be ostracized.

The only thing I'm hoping for is a good modding support so that people can actually turn the game in what it should have been.

I doubt the editor, if there is one, will allow you to make it a turn-based, isometric game.

I'm drawing a blank for an example but I know I've seen modders make some pretty radical changes to games before.

and even if the engine Isn't that flexible atleast people can take out all of Beths' "VISION OF A BETTER FALLOUT"

So there would be no more:
-Fat Man
-Robo Pony
-3 dawg
-Dogmeat sacrelig
-Being able to pause the game and fire several shots.(Oh yeah that makes it REAL challenging)
-Perks every level
-Generic "you must go find your father" storyline.
-goats
-"BEHEMOTH SUPERMUTANT OMG"(Afterall the whole concept of the supermutants was to have an army of behemoth's)
-Out of place BoS and Enclave.
-Horrible reskinned orcs as supermutants(modders could add proper skins/models)
-Ghouls that look like mummified corpses.
-Liam Neeson
-Out of place toilet humour.
-Making flame throwers out of empty pickle jars and bicycle seats.
-Nuckular sploding KARZzzzzzz
-FPS Style fire fights

Infact thats what Fallout 3 needs more than anything is a fallout 3 modding wishlist because theres so much that could be added to that list.

How much of this do you think is actually removable?

But it's retro-future, and since FM radio was known in the 1950s, they probably did predict that FM will be more widespread in the future.

wow, that was unexpected ... wait, no

seems like F3 is gonna be pretty jolly game
i just hope they will continue with what they do best and ill be able to collect shrooms somewhere again ...

The whole weapon system would require a complete overhaul to fit Fallout weaponry, what with all the AKs and Galils...

-Robo Pony
Not only that, the entire travelling system would have be redone to make the gameworld realistically sized in the macroscale, as it was in Fallout and Fallout 2.

The fact that the enclave is alive is a travesty, let alone working in a radio station. It would seem a waste of Bethesda's work to throw the entire radion-station-thingy away if only that work was any good, which I doubt.

Then again, if the game forces you to fight against several enemies at a time, a proper mod would be to erase fights altogether, leaving only the bosses, or maybe a bit more.

Unillenium said:
-Perks every level
Also, modders would have to completely redo the perks list as I think, I think it's doen accordingly to the perks-every-level thing they've got going on there.

-Generic "you must go find your father" storyline.
Firstly, they'd have to make the father killable, and then complete the storyline arcs accordingly.

Unillenium said:
-Out of place BoS and Enclave.
Erasing them altogether wouldn't hurt either.

Unillenium said:
-Liam Neeson
Way too much trouble and too little benefit. One thing leads to another. If you look at bethesda's history, you'd have to redo voice overs, dialogs and scripts nearly from scratch...

Unillenium said:
-Out of place toilet humour.
Out of place as in not belonging to Fallout in any way.
