The Witcher Thread

Been playing The Witcher for quite some time now, and I have to say that it's the first game in ages that I've come to really like. Feels good.

Only thing that brings it down for me is the voice acting. In some areas it feels really good, others it sounds like Operation Flashpoints radio messages. It even runs fairly decent on my 3 year old computer, I'm thinking the CPU is what's keeping it down (Athlon 64 FX 3000+).
Loading times does'nt seem that bad for me, they're long but not game breakingly long.

I just wish there was more of the game, and more dialogues.

From following the link that HoKa gave, I really want the Polish voice acting with the English texts, I've got no idea if it'd be possible or even accurate though - even with the "extended" dialogue change you can do. My only other option is to convince my polish friend to sit with me as I play and translate everything, hehehe.

My friend's polish version's due tomorrow.

I'll give some more info by then.

Meanwhile I'll continue giving Eschalon's demo a chance.

I don't like fantasy games too much, but I've read some reviews which made me playing this game.
now I'm finishing episode 3, so I can make a judgement of this game. Mostly I like it.
It's not a pure RPG as Fallout. You don't create a character, you don't have skills like stealing or gambling or talking. But still it's more RPG-ish than many games that have those feats.
There's really a lot of choices and chances to make (or not to make) smth and consequences for 'em. I'm not sure if I ever will be able to replay it to get the same. the game is rather heavily story-driven, but still you have lots of things to do or not to do, lots of choices. Also I liked that there are many ways to solve quests.
It's not a pure RPG also because you select just one sentence and then character begins the long uncontrolled talk. I don't like that stuff, because you don't know what your character will say the next moment. Dialogue reminded me of KotOR games. And the choices and consequences system reminded me of Fahrenheit (Indigo Prophecy).

Camera auto-rotation sometimes really pisses me off when I try to hit for a second or third attack and it changes angle so I miss.
Loading-saving time in Mercantile quarter is so damn long.

I'm playing russian version, it's not censored and actors did a very good work comparing to english version.

also there's a dog like Dogmeat that walks with you at the swamps :)

Success! Smash it. I knew it would work!

I replaced the english version of the Witcher's voices_3_00.bif voice sound file with the Witcher's polish version of the file (renaming it accordingly).

I have polish voices and english subtitles.

The good news is that dialogues and cutscenes are working as intended, the first lasting a while longer to compensate for the larger sound files, the second tracing off a bit whenever there's action. I've tested the whole Prologue, a good part of Chapter I, and some of Chapter III (where I currently am) and I'm glad to say I have suffered no crashes so far.

The bad news is I'm still stuck with the butchered english translation. Guess we'll have to wait for the toolset for that one.

Wasn't it supposed to be out yesterday along with the new patch?

Good thing it worked, when the toolset comes out you might even contribute to 'editing the suck' out of it in the English version.

Cheerio.

It doesn't seem like editing will be necessary, since the original script is apparently still on the disk.
Hopefully this means someone will cook up a patch full of awesome, come the toolset.

btw, just ran into some old demos of the witcher.. they wanted to implement a karma/reputation system at first and it was even demo'd. it was said even that ending will depend on your reputation.
but it didn't make into the final release. interesting, why it was cut from the game...

I think its actually better without it.

I feel that they try and make the morals in this game subjective to the player, putting a good/bad reputation marker on things kind of ruins that.

have just started it ... the dialogue and story so far annoys me but not as much as the female character models and lines ... a friend promised the game will get better later on so i'm sticking to it ... the game system seems ok and combat is nice

+ i like the camera .. if only FO3 used something similar

maybe, but the've lost some nice ways for quests to be solved. nut still the game is nice. as for what I saw in demos they've cut and changed many things...

yeah, you really should get into it a bit more. the prologue is a tutorial stage and is not too original (but compared to Kotor2's 'tutorial' stage, it's great =)). You should play at least till the end of the first chapter to see first big choices and consequences. as for the dialogues - yup, they're too long sometimes and sometimes you can't guess what will the PC say...
but still there are more positives than negatives for me

I got the game 1 week ago but waited for the patch 1.2. Loading time is no longer than 20-25 seconds and graphics are stunning. A little slow and annoying start, but music and ambient helped me overcome it.

In short after Fallout and Torment this is a first good RPG (half-RPG) game I have played.

This game is definately good, but it's not great like Fallout, Arcanum, or Torment. The choices/consequences in the game are the main aspect that I like, because a choice in Act 1 could fuck up a quest for you in Act 2-3. This leaves a lot of replayability to a game that is already 80+ hours long. The hardest difficulty is about perfect, as it frustrates me sometimes, yet allows me to eventually win battles by using species-specific potions/items and better tactics. The alchemy portion of the game is nice because if you actually know what you're doing as opposed to having the computer do all the work, you can make potions that are better than their computer-formulated counterparts. The combat system can feel like it's buggy, but it's all about timing and the weapon style you are using. I find it to be a nice alternative to the click-fest most other real-time RPGs are.

All in all, I think the game deserves a 9.5. This may seem a little excessive due to the sometimes odd dialogue/voice acting and some small bugs, but relatively, this game is the best RPG out on the market. Bioshock is too FPSish and lacks choices while every other RPG released in the last 5 years isn't even worth mentioning, so the Witcher takes the gold for the decade so far.

first off, note that Bioshock wasn't an FPRPG.

as for the lack of choices, i found that the lack of choices was nicely sugarcoated and eventually explained to you in a very nice way.

True, I just couldn't muster up the brain power to think of any other recent games that were any closer to a RPG than Bioshock. It's pretty sad the Bioshock was marketed as a FPS, yet was more of a RPG than some "RPG"s that are out there.

I have a question about the Quick Saves in the game.Everytime i push F5 a new and seperate "Quick save" is made.and each one is 9 MB !!!
Is there a way to fix this ?!
