The issue I take with people being up-in-arms over those data mining statements is..... it's ALREADY happening, whether it's your operating system or your web client or your service provider or your phone or a whole host of other peripherals you're using. Not that I'm making light of data mining- I think it's despicable -but this isn't going to be unique to W10.

As per the original topic question, I will DEFINITELY be picking up W10 on my laptop, because that fucker comes with W8 installed, and I cannot explain fully enough the extent to which I DESPISE that goddamned piece of trash OS. I bought a COMPUTER, not a fucking iphone, Microsoft!!! As for whether I update the W7 I will be getting for my new PC... I'll probably wait till the last second of the year we're being given to get the free upgrade, unless my experiences with it on my laptop somehow converts me to believing that it's an UTTERLY amazing piece of software. Meh, my favorite is still 2000, and I haven't been able to use that for about a decade now, so it's not like I have any great expectations for the next outing from Microsoft.

So just curious, how much does the switch to Windows fucks with everything? Games and design software included and empasized.

From what? Cause if you're switching from an older version to a newer version... hardly fucks with it at all. Since the 90s and the rise of video gaming, Windows Operating Systems were designed with gaming support in mind, and it took WME for Microsoft to start putting any effort into "streamlining" their programs. That didn't go so well. But for the most part, updates are pretty seamless. You install the thing, which will probably take you a good chunk of a day, then it's installed. If it's years old, THEN you'll be subject to days and days and days of constant updating, but it will still be totally functional in those days.

If you're switching from something else..... can't say. Been a Windows PC user for life. Been "exposed" to the alternatives, and just never took any liking to them.

I use Windows 7, but I heard horror stories about Windows 8 making some software and games misbeahave. So I am just wondering.

W8 runs impressively smoothly. It's the INTERFACE that's a piece of shit. There is no Start Menu anymore, which is my biggest gripe. NOW it's the Start Page; the home for your apps, for your networking! Um, I did NOT buy an Apple product, Microsoft, I want my damn Windows back! I can't find where the fuck my Accessories folder is without making a custom shortcut because the damn software decided for me that I don't need to use the Start Menu anymore. At least W7 allowed you to customize the Start Menu to APPEAR like classic versions... Not so with W8! It's gone for good! That's supposedly one of the major benefits of W10; it's Microsoft's effort to return to the familiarity of form that its users are accustomed to. W8 has its perks, but to me they're just nifty gimmicks. Not enough to warrant getting the software. I only have it because the laptop came with it. If it had been an option, I'd have grabbed one with W7 installed.

As far as games running poorly... it seems to be up to the system, not the operating system. I've heard horror stories, but I've also heard glamor stories, as well. Just seems to be a matter of how well-constructed the PC was designed.

Big companies would love to control every step people make on the internet, and monetize it, so it's at least good that some noise is made. I wish people would use more open source software, which is free and tranrparent and sometimes is better than the commercial equivalent. As i use linux and usually build the whole system from the ground up (mostly from open source software), most of the time i can be pretty sure that there is no shit going on behind the scenes. I also block java scripts and cookies by default in web browsers (i use duckduckgo.com as a search engine), then i degoogled my smartphone completely (although i think google is one of the better big companies as far as ethics go). I do not use social sites like facebook, or applications like skype, so all in all one can greatly reduce ones footprint in the internet if he so wishes to.

After i deleted my facebook account a few years ago, i was astonished, that i coulnd still google a good bit of my facebook info.

Oh, no doubt. There's quite a lot of power to protect one's identify if one were to endeavor to do so. All the more reason I think some people need a bit of a reality check. I said specifically that I'm NOT making light of these problems, because I'm against them, but at the same time, if you're already in the spider's web of your own accord, you have no right to complain about the new silks being threaded.

I'm just too behind on software to be remotely capable of such a thorough footprint removal process. I can do it by avoiding certain online services (never used FB, twitter, reddit, etc), but I wouldn't even remotely know where to begin to "de-google" a smart phone, and I am VERY unfamiliar with Linux. Plus I kinda have a soft spot for Skype because I was using it "back in the day" when it was JUST a peer-to-peer chatting service, not this social media ad space and more. The majority of my efforts (which I jokingly refer to as "staying off the grid") are all physical. Paying in cash wherever I go, ample document shredding, burning of personal documents that I don't need to keep, etc etc. I guess that's just another area where I'm pretty damned oldschool about what I do... XD

2 Years ago, i also knew nothing about it, but there is something freeing about learning to operate and bend a unix based system to your needs. Not that i'm emploring everyone should do so, although, these days, some linux distributions are easier to install and casually use than windows. Making them play games can be a bit problematic though , but that might change with steamos.

Yeah, stores and banks have a pretty good view on what people buy, with that personal tracking device known as a credit card. I also try to use cash, but i have a very huge dislike for carrying around pockets full of metal currency, so.... maybe bitcoin is the future?

It's not just them tracking my spending habits, it's having a financial footprint AT ALL. Not to mention all those stores getting hacked and the credit card data of millions of customers getting stolen several times in quick succession galvanized me to take my purchasing habits much more seriously. But loose change is really easy to deal with: I spend it. Few cashiers mind a couple extra seconds to give them the exact change, so as long as the lines are short or you just don't care, it's very easy to spend the metal coins. Also, I figured out a system of keeping my wallet "stocked" with precisely $1 in coins, separated into a couple quarters, several dimes, a few nickels, and 5 pennies. That way, no matter what my change comes out to, I can always tally it up and have the appropriate coin ready at hand to pay them. I'm actually RUNNING OUT of change because I spend it all! Better still, I'm getting 100% of it for my own use: I'm not paying a fee to use a damn Coin Star machine. XD

Anywho, back to Microsoft Operating Systems discussions...

As long as people continue to buy those products despite the noise it is kinda meaningless.

I mean hands down, from all the people here complaining, how many actually decided to change to a different OS, differen browsers and deleating their Facebook account?

We are all good in bitching. But most of the time that's it :V

Well you are the exception to the rule.

Eh, I'll wait until there's a way around it, or I'll look to alternatives like Linux and emulate anything I can't run on it natively. Most of my shit is probably already handed out to major corporations but I'm not gounna sign a waiver for access to my files and all the other shit they're now explicitly pulling.
