CanardPC's almost-review

Whatever happened to cats in fallout? I would have loved to have a go at one with a bozar... Sorry Mikael, random thought
There's a woman in Mom's Diner in Fallout 2 that has a story about her childhood pet cat. Apparently, they were often used as a source of food, though that doesn't really explain their complete disappearance. Perhaps cats can't deal with radiation like other things? That is, get bigger and meaner.

I kind of feel like that of doing that to people who like to shoot cats.
As a great fan of cats I am against cruelty against felines.

Hmm

Ok so whats this guys handle on NMA? Sounds like one of the more jaded of you, kettle black I know, reviewed the game.

Kidding aside, being made to review the game in a luxury Hotel, my god how did he survive. I also have a feeling the recent leaking of the 360 console version from what has been determined to be from a reviewer copy has something to do with "We don't trust you with our product anymore"

I'm not certain that this practice is new, but the point is that it isn't the right environment in which to review a game, where the developer gets to dictate what you can and cannot put into your review.

Infamously, GTA IV did it too. And it was derided for it as well, though I think it was lost in the tides of hype of the game.

I don't like it. If there are so many problems with review copies just stop sending out copies long before release. That way the problem of bias due to preferential treatment/exclusives is also solved.

Man the media is so subservient to the industry right now. It is disturbing.

In any case, I don't know how much Bethesda care about the preview of some marginal French magazine, but something tells me they won't be invited for TES5 preview sessions.

Its like making a boat. Todd decides that he wants to put a giant motor on the back, someone else puts a huge mast and sail in the middle, Emil puts a huge old lady killing cannon on the bow, someone else paints a giant red cross mercy boat symbol for the paint job, but no one bothers to put in anything to tie it all together.

Except that it is even worse than that in this case, because they actually inherited a working boat - maybe one that needed a little restoration and some refinement - along with plans for a new and improved boat.

All they've done is spent their time sawing bits off and drilling holes in the bottom, to make it lighter or something...

I'm a bit late to the party, but that was a tad depressing. After reading this, and watching those Gametrailers videos, I'm nearly certain that I'm going to cancel my FO3 pre-order and get something else with my $67.

Any suggestions for the PS3 or PC?

Depends on your preferences. There's the recent BioShock port for Ps3 but you might have already played the game. There's Little Big Planet though I'm still watching that on with distrust. There's Mirror's Edge which certainly looks exciting.

The other AAA titles this fall are prolly Gears of War 2, Dead Space, Left 4 Dead and Saints Row 2. Personally, out of that list, only Saints Row 2 has some appeal.

The purchase I'm personally still happiest with so far (of recently released titles: the GTA pack from Steam was prolly the best purchase overall :P) is World of Goo.

I <3 World of Goo.

I have LBP pre-ordered, and am quite excited about it.

I'm a big fan of RPGs, and I didn't really play Bioshock while it was on 360 or PC... maybe I'll switch over to that.

BioShock is pretty light on the RPG action, and it's a decent but not great shooter. Its real hook is the fantastic setting, amazing level design and solid atmosphere. If that's not something that's high on your priority list you might be better of skipping it.

I think it has a demo out on PSN.

News to me, I hadn't heard that they had figured out that it was a review copy or that review copies even exist. That was an assumption many people have made but they forget that people do periodically steal a copy off of the production line so it could easily be the gold version.

While reading this article, I got the impression that Omar Boulon started out trying to be somewhat fair, but got more and more negative as he went about writing and - coincidentally - thinking about the game. As he developed his opinion, it became more negative.

Most locations you can discover are "raider dungeons". City ruins are copy-paste of the same and only model
Yeah. That's really something to look for. Nothing surprising though.
Maybe there will be also some nice Ayleid easter-egg - like some generic ruins to be discovered deep down beneath Washington DC - something just for xbox achievement.

Even worse, where the atmosphere of decay should have been palpable, when you are walking in a city overflowed by skyscrapers ruins, disembowelled roads, peopled by half-savages, one can focus on but one thing: ruins placed strategically to prevent you from crossing the street because designers decided that you shouldn't take THIS path.
I especially liked that one. And this game's said to have open world and so-called "freedom of movement", huh?
World in let's say Gothic 1 & 2 is very small area but at the same time it seems quite open and accessible when one try to climb here and there or avoid some obvious routes, sometimes just for fun [I actually spent quite some time playing Gothic II just to chceck if I can reach some places in different way without using cheats].
I think compass and quest arrow seems quite right now. It will prevent player from becoming frustrated that he/she cannot cross street wherever he/she pleases, whereve seems quite logical or simply good for stealthy person... etc. Instead, there will be constant guide which help to avoid such nasty, frustrating situations and allow to immerse completely. It would be even better if there was big green guiding arrow floating several inches before Player's Character.

I still want to play it for a while though. Just out of curiosity, only to see it all with my own eyes. But I think I'll wait for some second-hand copy. I have started playing for the first time Gothic 3 few days ago and I very much like what I see [even though there is no climbing, but world seems open and accessible enough - no loading, no "the road is closed! follow big arrow!", no doors to caves... wait, Gothic games never had any of those] so my next purchase will be rather addon "Gothic III: Forsaken Gods" than Bethesda'a new product.

Same here.

Not all of them. The rest wised up and now they stay out of sight and away from people. They always use loading times to hide before any player characters arrive. Smart critters. ;)

Anyway, back to the topic.

I think the almost-review was quite an honest one from a Fallout fan rather than a Generic Fun Game In Its Own Right #X fan (or a bought-off journalist of course). Someone who obviously didn't buy into the "every bit of everything must always change for everything all the time because blah blah blah evolution" hype. And someone who actually cares about the namesake of Fallout. The only games I've liked because 'they might be fun in their own right' are first installments and spin-offs (which get some scrutiny for assuming such-and-such namesake but certainly less scrutiny than otherwise). To be part of a series is to forfeit the 'in its own right' excuse.

You should consider moving to Ulthar. I hear it's quite lovely and there's a cottage available.

IT IS THE GREATEST SHOOTER OH GOD BIOSHOCK MAKES ME SO HAPPY

God damn I enjoy that game. Though like Brother None mentions, it's not really an RPG at all. There's pretty minor character customization with the plasmids and weapon upgrades, and really only one choice in the whole game. It's even less of an RPG than System Shock 2.

Still, if you like shooters at all, well worth playing. I played through it twice which is a fairly rare occurrence for me, and would gladly play through again if they release the PS3 goodies for the PC version in a patch. Also worth noting that you can find it for $20 on PC now I'm fairly sure.
