Microsoft has bought Zenimax/Bethesda

Also, with Microsoft having many of the old school Fallout talent working with them we may no longer see stupid shit like Kid In A Fridge or Cabot House.
To be fair Cabot House is at least somewhat interesting despite being somewhat out of place, Kid In A Fridge is just ridiculous.

But I won't claim to be unbiased about The Cabot's, that would be hypocritical of me.

I for one am not a fan of The Legion, but I can understand you curiosity on the subject. In any case it should be studied before it's gone for good, I calculate a 95% chance that The Legion will not last the year.

Honestly my point is that I want the Legion to be a faction worth playing through and siding with. As New Vegas stands normally... their content is just more boring compared to the other three paths. It really just feels like the short development time meant that they drew the short straw, and Caesar's Legion just ends up feeling... generic evil.

@Robert Edwin House you're lucky I made a promise to @ironmask or I would derail us all by arguing with you about the Legion.

In terms of the Microsoft purchase... I, like many here, am hopefully optimistic. So long as they don’t give Bethesda too much free reign, maybe they’ll listen to fans and make something that’s even a step in the right direction.

EDIT: Also, as Ranger said, I hope they fire Pete “What Am I, a Nerd?” Hines as well.

I too am optimistic, as unlike Bethesda under Todd I think Microsoft actually gives a care about their personal reputation beyond the Atomic Shop enough to not release a big title under their ownership half finished and underdeveloped.

Exactly. Say what you will about Microsoft, even Halo after it went to shit was more “consumer ready” than Bethesda bugfests.

InXile had announced that they would be making a AAA RPG using Unreal engine 5. Could also be a Skyrim clone for all we know:
https://fextralife.com/inxile-entertainment-next-aaa-rpg-will-use-unreal-engine-5/
So would Awoken, TES 6 and whatever this AAA RPG from inXIle is, compete with each other?
Well actually, since they want people to go and subscribe to Game Pass they'd get access to all three of those games either way so I guess it doesn't matter on the xbox side of things. And I'm sure there's going to be differences between them to attract different crowds. Bethesda's little ace up their sleeve has always been the extreme amount of mods that are available thanks to releasing that modding kit of theirs. Doubt Awoken or InXile's game would get that kind of a modding kit. So Bethesda provides a shitty sandbox that people can play around with mods in. Awoken will probably be more narratively driven. No idea what InXile's trait would be though.

Anyway. I'm still tired of fantasy games so none of these sounds appealing to me.

Sure, it's interesting how godawful it is and how much they managed to fuck with the lore. It's not a good kind of interesting though.

[edit]

Oh and I guess we'll see what Microsofts influence is on Bethesda's products with Fallout 76. Will it be proper patched? Will they alter the monkey milking? Will they remove the atomic shop?

And to think it actually happened. Damn.

A fallout reboot would be interesting if they just used Fallout 1 for the inspiration, as it is has the best literary vibe of any of the games that followed.

"To the west, you can see stars in an open sky. For the first time in your life, you are looking at the outside world."

The games of old really relied on playing up the imaginations of the player, the way books do for readers. Bethesda destroyed that literary immersion in favour of visceral stimulation, obviously because more people play Call of Duty than games like Myst.

A reboot that brought us the best of both worlds would be interesting. A solid remaster of the earlier fallouts would be nice and I'd still take a fallout 5. But I think we should all be prepared for the Fallout MMO announce sometime in the next couple years, just incase.

I have been on these forums for a very long time and I remember the doomsayers who said fallout will suck from now on .
Back then I thought "nah how bad can it get?" then came fo3 which I dislike for not being isometric and turn based alone (let alone all the other shortcomings) then fallout 4 which made it worse and was totally uninspired, then 76 which I didn't even buy for 10 bucks .

since I am officially no fan of current fallout anymore, things either stay the same (nothing lost) or will improve. they have it in their hands. let todd ruin games other than fallout and give it back to its creators.

Remember when some people used to say "best game ever is if Bethesda makes the map and Obsidian the story". I guess Microsoft could do that and see if it makes "the best game" or not.

Reminds me of that joke of that incredibly beautiful but very stupid blonde and the very ugly genius professor.

Heh I can't wait for a Fallout 5 that is the result of Obsidian working with Bethesda and reactions on release here being "Microsoft, you only had to do one thing; have Obsidian do the writing and Bethesda make the map. Not Obsidian making the map and Bethesda doing the writing."

BTW, I never felt that the FNV map was inferior to the FO3 one. If anything it was cluttered with all kinds of pointless crap just to stuff the game with something because the story and the quests were shit.

In all seriousness, if people here or anywhere else now thing that this is going to lead to a sequel in the vein of Fallout New Vegas then I think they will come out very very disappointed.
You once again put to much trust in a big company, it will see it as its job now to fail to abuse that trust.

I thought the NV map was waayy better. It actually had a coherent critical path, and meaningful locations, more recognizable landmarks, and less random junk. I guess it was slightly smaller, iirc, which probably upset some people. And people complained about it being too flat, but I mean.... it's Nevada...

Maybe the people who preferred exploring a world that was entirely puke green and grey were also disappointed.

So, even though I know some are talking about the chance for a New Vegas 2, I have something I'd far prefer.

I want a New Vegas remaster, and I mean that in the fullest sense of the word. I would like New Vegas to be remastered with more Legion content. Expand the map to show Legion held territory besides Cottonwood Cove and the Fort. A new engine that actually works and doesn't yield potato faces. An engine designed to have robust modding tools going forward. Include all the DLC from the original, the new Legion content, a good stable engine and then... just put it up for sale and let it fly.

I'd like a New Vegas remake. Recreate the entire game from scratch. Keep the basic ideas there (Hoover Dam and major factions), but remake it to improve on everything that was flawed in the original game.

I would be happy with an isometric remake, it could be something truly special. The issue with games as big as Bethesda's, that rely on the player seeing the face of every NPC, is that eventually all look the same (ever wondered why there are no fat people in New Vegas, or why the only people who look distinct from every other NPC in the games are Ulysses and Graham?). I much prefer the classic talking heads, this adds massive personality to characters as they have their unique looks with a level of detail that simply isn't possible with generic faces.

Plus having isometric turn-based tactical (I hope) combat, the Second Battle of Hoover Dam could be something truly special. But anyhow this is all just wishful thinking. I was never a heavy cRPG player, but New Vegas' gameplay is just bad IMO. I had much more fun with Wasteland 2's combat.

My thoughts on the Legion is that the only way to genuinely roleplay a Legion character is to play an evil or sadistic character. Whatever corruption the NCR may have is better than slaving and crucifying people left and right.

I would like either a remake of Fallout New Vegas with improves Vegas/Legion or a new spin-off, perhaps set in New Orleans or Texas. Revisiting the Midwest could be another possibility.

Though I really wished they were allowed to make the main series games, while letting Bethesda handle spin off such as 76 or Shelter. So games which offer a different experience of the Fallout World, but (going forward) don't harm the lore and aren't as bad (hopefully). I mean as long as they are non canon they can mess with Mothmen all they want for all I care.

I honestly utterly despise Bethesda worlds since Oblivion and never got the appeal of them. A large chunk of the locations in their world is copy and pasted dungeons with a random assortment of enemies filled to the brim with their overused to shit enviromental storytellin bullshit, or locations that might as well be living on their own bubble because locations like these in Bethesda games don't even acknowledge each other's existence.

Several New Vegas locations are definitely filler to fill the map, not having much of importance in them, but at least it doesn't have copy and pasted dungeons, or locations not acknowledging each other's existence. In fact, the game goes out its way to make locations acknowledge each other, at least ones close to each other like Sloan and Quarry Junction and Novac and that power plant with the ghouls.

It's like people have to find anything to praise Bethesda games for and since the writing and characters are so terrible, they have to trick themselves into thinking their world design is actually good, and not just a theme park with a random assortment of locations.

So no, i don't want a Fallout game with the world design of Bethesda, get that shit out of my Fallout game. I want a cohesive world with locations that look like they weren't made in random location creater program.

When people say Bethesda makes good worlds what they actually mean is "it's like I always have a new location to kill people at!".

Bethesda's world design philosophy is completely at odds with what Fallout is.
