Racism

I’m okay with racism as long as no one actually gets hurt by it. For example I can’t say I’ve never spoken a derogatory racial epithet at another driver while on the highway.
There are actually times when it’s fun. Race jokes are actually funny sometimes. Especially when said by the race in question in a self deprecating way. I worked with a black dude that would say things like “Is we sick, boss?” or “I’s tries hahda next time!” if he made a mistake. I practically doubled over laughing the first time he did that.

I’ll start!
A tribute to my heritage:
Did you hear about the Irish terrorist who tried to blow up a bus? He got severe burn marks on his mouth from the exhaust pipe.

@mobucks I’d agree with that. My family call eachother Polacks, WOPs, and filthy frenchmen at just about every family gathering.

Oh, and as for the self-deprecating joke: I can tell I’m French. The other day the toaster popped behind me when I was making breakfast and I instinctively threw my hands up in surrender.

None of that is actual racism though, you're venting frustration, you're in traffic, raging, you're looking for hurtful terms
As for the jokes, they're... jokes...
I never thought I'd stand around sounding like some "anti pc advocate", but seriously... none of what you said describes behaviours of actual racists!
My father is Peruvian, me and my brother make fun of him, of his accent, we make fun of the Spanish language - we make fun of Norwegians, we're Norwegian on my mother's side. We make fun of black people, their deep voice and their accents, we have a lot of first hand experience with it, being Norwegians our black people are authentic Africans, and my brother has several good friends, from Zanzibar, Kenya, Ghana and Sierra Leone. The Sierra Leonean in particular is a beast! Amazing guy, he bailed my brother out of a scuffle by knocking two guys heads together like coconuts.
That guy once got himself a black car, with black uphostery and tinted windows. His plan was to don a leather jacket and become completely invisible when driving, because, in his own words "I am black too!"

We love to giggle at the "asian hair", you know, when asian men have sort of half-long hair, but still sort of trimmed.
Shit, we laugh at pretty much every nationality, every weird accent, every stereotype, cus it's fun.
One time I suggested to him that we might have Jewish heritage. He stopped chewing, he stared at me, and he sputtered "WHAT THE FUCK JEWS!?"
I LAUGHED
We do probably have some Jewish heritage though, on mom's side.
He would routinely mock his Moroccan friend for starving himself during Ramadan, and his friend - the muslim - would simply take the mockery, with a little tear in his eye :D
That guy was awesome btw, like a spitting image of Snoop Dogg, he always wanted to ask me intricate questions, like I was some walking wikipedia page. He ended up deported due to posession of drugs :(

None of that is _ACTUAL_ racism! None of that means me - or my brother - want to really subjucate anybody of another race, or that we truly consider any of our non-white family or friends to be inferior! That would be crazy! I can't imagine either of these people being threatened with having their human rights reduced in ANY way! In the words of one of my MOST staunchly patriotic - and almost inbredly pure Norwegian friends: They'd have to go through me and my rifle first.

That very same friend, when he comes to visit, and I open the door, will roman-salute me, and go "Heil!"

Well. I guess someone has to open this can of worms ... so why not the leftiest leftist this community has ever seen ... at least that way everyone can blame the socialist-commie-bastart.

The issue and dangers of racism isn't the jokes people tell which often are not even racist, but just humor. Racism, if we go by some text book definitions is the idea of ethnicities with values attached to it. And not all forms of racism are the same, but they are all equal in their danger. A division between people that's based on pseudo science, on things that we know by now to be fake, often based on lies or the gross oversimplification, like in matters of culture and religion. If you take the extreme end of the spectrum with the nazis and the Holocaust it becomes very obvious how absurd it is. Someone already posted the "Wer Jude ist entscheide ich!", where the Nazis declared Jews as a race and used that to elimiate all and everyone of them. But even mild forms of racism, where one race feels inherently supperior is dangerous for a society. You don't need concentration camps, racism was and is used to support regimes, opressions, things like racial segregation, apartheit and all of that.

But what makes it really dangerous, once it's a part of your mindset, it become a natural feeling once it's a part of the main stream and something people hold as self evident. Because than it's not just racism due to hate or prejudice, but due to habit. Not everyone hates minorities or other ethnicities, infact the majority probably does not and never really has. Not even in nazi germany or during slavery, most people simply saw it as the natural order of things. But what they all have been, was a part of a system and society that encouraged such behaviour which made cruelty the norm, which made it a habit, which parents taught their children and they lived it. And how easy it is to create such systems, was made very obvious by genocides like in Rwanda. 3 groups seperated by the colonial power in the past. They had virtually no differences. And yet, at some point one group decided to one day kill more than 800.000 people of the other 'ethnicity'.

@Crni Vuk Leftist or not, I agree. And if anyone tries to scapegoat you in this thread, let it be known that I will fight them.

...for Crni.

Did we start replying at the same time Crni? My god, that is some dreary reading! I was smiling, but I no longer am! I beat you with seven minutes, and I included fun anecdotes, clever little twists, and a dynamic "body" of narrative, complete with a fitting ending.
Your ending was just... depressing, man :I now I'm thinking of the Rwandan genocide :I I didn't want to think of that now!

I couldn't have came up with a better response, Crni. You seem very wise. A racist joke here or there I have no problem with. I won't do things like that, but I'm not offended by the occasional mockery. It's people who truly believe their race is better than another that is a real problem. No one should condone that shit. And yes, it's a dangerous problem.

Well, thank you I guess.

Well, an aditional comment about the pecuilar nature of 'racist' jokes.

I think this is a complex matter, a lot more than just blatant racism. Why? I think Slavoj Zizek once said something along the lines of, we should be allowed to tell them to each other, but society should reject them. What could this mean? Well, every society has certain norms, rules if you so want, that most people more or less follow to some degree, they are not laws but things like social norm. Things most poeple simply agree to, not to do. Like not spitting in the face of strangers, or not flushing the toilet that sort of things. And jokes about races, are similar to that. It can be difficult to know when a joke is appropiate and when it isn't. For example, making a joke about the mother of a good friend, while drunk? That might be acceptable and not serious. On her funeral? Maybe not so much.

I see a lot of people in social networks making jokes about refugees under some news about Syriah or the NGOs rescueing people in the mediterranean sea. And you know those are not meant to be 'humor'. We all know those kind of individuals. And the issue here is, if we as a society don't step in and say, hey asshole, that's over the line, then it becomes part of the mainstream.

*The exception to this, is a stage (and in some sense movies, books and the like) obviously comedians should be always free to say what they want and the audience should decide for themself, what they accept as funny and what they don't. So yeah, I also reject the idea of 'political correctness' in a more personal space and when it comes to entertainment. But that doesn't mean we as a society should accept simply everything. It's really difficult. Particularly in such politiced times like today. In the past it was a bit easier I think, simply because we all knew it, we knew there was this person in the neighbourhood, the family, our school you know, if he tolda joke, then it wasn't one, because he/she meant it. It's not the same as two friends making fun together or co workers pissing each other off just for shit and giggles. And those are the people, we have to look out for and tell to shut up.

@Crni Vuk again, I agree. I think we need to be able to draw the distinction and tell people when they’re crossing a line; but not do it always, if both parties are doing so in good humor. Like sex, consent has everything to do with it.

I'm only helping a single syrian immigrant finishing her Master's degree and finding a job.

At least your helping someone, Hass. Some people just can't be bothered. I will never understand how some people can be so callous that they think these people fleeing a war zone, a lot of them children, do not deserve help. They are not terrorists.

Well, she's my girlfriend, so it's not like I'm just doing it out of the goodness of my heart.
We have a lot of international students where I work, though, and if any of them needs any help with job applications or understanding contracts I'm always happy to help.

You honestly seem like the curmudgeonly German man with a heart of gold. Is that a cliche? It should be.

In seriousness though, it’s nice that you’re willing to help students and such. I remember having college professors/other “teacher” figures in my life that didn’t give half a dick about my success and only wanted a paycheck. Glad you’re not one’ve them, man.

I mean, it doesn't take much time for example to explain the details of a job contract to a guy or recommend some job search pages and stuff. And all the international guys I met here were really good people, so yeah, happy to help.
