Secret of Prometheus

Michael Fassbender, as anyone might guess, is pretty fucking fantastic.
David is unquestionably the best character in Prometheus, more interesting and entertaining than the main characters.

the android will usually be popular, I think, and I'll admit the guy did a pretty good job, but the character still didn't really grab me.

was he supposed to be going insane, or something?
why did he want to wipe out the human race?

maybe I've just seen to much sci-fi, but he seemed kind of like a retread, and ripping the head off seemed more lazy than homage to me.
it just didn't feel like they had any fresh ideas or different spin on anything in here, and the crazy android is just an example.

so much of this stuff is in the eye of the beholder that I'm not even trying to blame the movie -- maybe if I was 16 and had never seen alien(s) this would be the best movie ever, but I still doubt it.

I liked the part where he's watching lawrence of arabia, but after that his character didn't seem very ....fleshed out, let's say.

I thought a few characters were pretty good. Theron played the bitch rather well, and the black captain was excellent (already like that actor from his show on BBC) I liked those two's interaction, esp. when he called her out as a droid for being such a frigid bitch. Maybe she was a droid? Also Noomi Rapace was pretty meh up untill she had to "abort!", that scene was especially well acted IMO.
David, while certainly allied to Weyland from the start, faltered a bit in my eyes as becoming a little too abrasive for a droid once the cards were finally on the table. The droids from the first two movies (esp. the "bad" one from the first) did better IMO, as they always seemed to be droids, whereas David seemed to become more of an ass. Then again, he was Weyland's personal droid, so maybe that fits better than I am giving credit for.

[spoiler:fcd56ece44]I think there was enough material for a "hard" sci-fi story just with the stuff about David and the Engineers. Both of them could have been more developed. The Alien stuff is fun and it sells, but it didn't make Prometheus a better movie.[/spoiler:fcd56ece44]

So I hope they don't come up with things like bio-engineered by Jockeys as weapons or anything like that. Maybe its just me but that would totally ruin it for me.

Meh I don't mind this theory myself, the xenomorphs being a type of weapon or 'planet forming' organism the Jockeys send in to cleanse and prepare planets for colonization.

A while ago I read an article somewhere from a fan who looked at it from a biologist point of view and pointed out several reasons why the creature is more likely to have artificial origins than a natural one.

Do you have a Link to that Dutch?

Xenomorphs as some sort of bio-engineered Von Neumann probes/berserkers? Heh, I actually like that idea.

Oddly I have heard the theory advanced that they are a REALLY aggressive form of STD, Kinda like the ultimate Knob rot.

I've heard a lot of people espousing that stuff, and I don't know if it's just something that kind of caught on, or if it's from some kind of official source, or maybe just a bunch of people came up with it independently, but I'm not entirely buying in.

it does make some kind of sense, but didn't they have some bigass mural thing that had the life cycle of the alien on it, and another giant mural of a xeno?
that seems kind of odd to devote that to an artificial weapon -- it's like they had some kind of reverence for it, and I believe that's the same ooze the guy drank at the beginning.
like maybe it's some kind of alien royal jelly they use.

and fuck spoilers -- if you're reading this thread you deserve to be spoiled.

I just find it hard to believe it's a bioweapon they cooked up to wipe out earth for whatever goofy reason, but given the writing, anything's possible.
also, I find it pretty hard to believe that they have the same goals and ideals a billion years after the opener, or whatever it is, so who knows what they're trying to do.
maybe it's some kind of sacred animal and they just want to honor us by letting it propagate on earth.

sacred animals which rip your chest open. Lulz.

Though ... it is not even THAT far away from the pictures of Gigers Necronomicon I am not sure right now.

Well a cow would rip your chest open if he was born in there and grew up in there - he just wouldn't be as menacing when he came out

Yea I can't see the artical of worship thing, I do think that they could be a precursor to Terra forming OR a weapon i.e. used as a long term guard for a facility you where leaving alone for a few years any one sticking their nasal proboscis where it don't belong get's a dose of Face rape followed by chest busting and little mouth chewing on your lower intestine kind of death.

I can see most sentient species getting freaked out by that kind of stuff and adding a entry into the Lonely universe travel guide-

"Shortly after arriving at Fury 316 you will notice that the hydro carbon vapors whipping past you at some speed and need to find your nearest hostel, I would not Recommend the one made from a old abandoned star ship as the local life form is known to use you as part of it's reproductive cycle and will find a junior member of it's species attached to your travel companions face and followed shortly after the resultant offspring will erupt out of his or her chest with unwanted results, However the meal provided was passable and the statue of Glurg the Destroyer in the main hall is unmissable all in all 2 out of five stars".

After all this, would any of you guys recommend it for me to watch? I'm a huge fan of the first and second films. Hated the third and I didn't even bother to finish the fourth.

I honestly have to say "at your own risk".
One thing I do think is superior is that this movie wasn't some brain dead action movie with moral preaching.

That's the lost formula.

I couldn't recommend it, but the prob w ith that is a lot pf ppl liked it and u might be one of those.
Everybody lokes diff stuff

If u do see it I'd see the 3d

Recently I have been thinking about the goo again in Prometheus and when I thought about the fact that one of the writers of Lost worked on it this I realized a rather terrible possibility.

Right now we only know that the stuff either disintegrates organic creatures (but this could be something else) or mutates them.

I honestly have the worry that the writer will pull some bullshit reason out of his ass that the effects of the black goo depends on the person who gets in touch with it, their personality or their nature.

Alien.

I really don't see alien raising many questions.
in your imagination, everything on set might've had a backstory, but it was a fairly straightforward movie.

this movie was made by a guy who created lost, and written as part 1 of a trilogy, so the very nature of the movie will be somewhat different.

I just think these guys did an alien cover, and it wasn't a particularly good cover.
