/edit:
You know, I just thought how they'd do the upcoming Han Solo movie and how to make that movie and character up to the new standard.
Well, the new continuity already delivers.

Yes, that is Han Solo's sassy black ex-wife who is literally the saner Solo.
Ok, she's not actually his ex-wife, it was part of a scam they were running. But the outrage of this happening in a movie would be delicious.
Oh, and I just realized that the weird-ass bombers from the beginning of the movie are literally called "MG-100 StarFortress SF-17". Now with more references. I was half expecting some rebel Resistance fighter to ride a bomb down on the Dreadnaught waving her hat around.

To be honest, I can't wait till all the hype really slows down and most of the people that are in denial right now, realize how bad the new Star Wars movies actually are. There are still people out there defending Rey with the argument, that if she is a Mary Sue, so must be Luke!

He is. So is Anakin.

He is. So is Anakin.
Luke not all that much (at least not in screen), but Anakin in the first movie for sure.
All of Luke's achievements were reasonably set up within the film. He is a good pilot, has experience with a ship that has a very similar control layout to the X-Wing and has shot small targets at high speeds in a canyon, he has seen what the Force can do and had a lesson in how to let the Force guide his movements. Obi Wan's Force ghost then reminds him to relax when he's doing the trench run and let the Force guide his shot. Luke isn't actually guiding the torpedo with the Force, he just pulled the trigger at the right moment, intuitively guided. Nothing outlandish.
In ESB he uses the Force to grab his lightsaber and after only a short time of training is capable of using the Force much more. The timeline of the movie is all wonky, his training montage feels more like weeks and months instead of the few hours and days that the Millennium Falcon's storyline feels like, but his progress was shown at least.
Anakin was full on Mary Sue, though (although the intention was more likely to get little kids to love the movie). A little kid that builds robots from scratch (although they're weirdly close to mass produced robots as well), a pod racer that is much better and faster than any other pod racer made by professionals, a super strong connection to the Force (that mostly lets him be a super pod racer) and a pilot... At age of nine, when he's a slave.
Yeah, no, I don't believe any of it. TPM is garbage, mostly because Lucas wanted to bring in too much from the original movies. R2 and 3PO, Tatooine, everything had to be in there. It didn't work. The prequels should have started with Episode 2.
Anakin got a lot more conflict and failure in the other movies and shows, though. Made him a much more relatable character and not just a front for kids to like the movie.
Rey... Dunno. Her fighting skill and mechanical skill is explained, but her piloting skill and intuitive knowledge of the Falcon, a ship that is notoriously messy in its mechanics, are not. And her Force powers are pretty OP, to be honest. She hasn't seen anything about the Force and yet can easily to telekinesis and Mind Tricks? Hm. A bit too much, but hey, at least she's not young Anakin.

Hilarious article:

TLJ didn't alienate the fans enough!
I just love Vox.

I just see her as a girl version of Anakin for better or worse. If you said her Daddy was Force God it would line right up. Still haven't watched the new one, but Star Wars is dead to me at this point. For the kids has never been more applicable. When most of the movies in the series are average you know it is time to stop caring. I guess losing Lucas as showrunner and changing to design by committee is killing these movies quicker than we thought.

But Anakin, as badly written as he is, is not a Mary Sue, because he has a back story. It's a shitty one. But it's there. What is the backstory really of Rey in TFA? She has none. She's just there. On Jacku. I know a lot of people said, wait for the next movie! That will explain her powers! Now we have it, and it explains nothing. Quite the oposite even. But with the difference that you're now sexist for pointing it out.

I just recently had this discussion with Tagz also, and it kinda ended up with me being obtuse and possibly sexist. But the fact that Rey has been explained as a "you're a nobody!" in TLJ, actually confirms her Status as Mary Sue. Since that is one of the definitions for it. A nobody who's almost good at everything saving the day, without any real explanation given. Seriously, go and watch the new movie, if only for the cringe. It really sucks.

He is. So is Anakin.
Mary Sue is, as far as I can tell, a definition used to describe a character. Rey fitts that describtion, not perfectly of course, but close enough.

What fits to Anakin (at least if we look at the Phantom Menace) is 'The Chosen One'. You know, he's space Jesus. The guy to bring balance to the force, the one who was borned for it! That's also bad writing - most of the time ... But it's not Mary Sue.

Luke is the every guy, the average hero. He is someone without any debth or real character, but that's not uncommon with that type of story. I mean it can be pretty boring though. But Mary Sue? Naw.

Don't get me wrong, I like Reys character - definetly a lot more than Anakin. But she's a Mery Sue.

Not necessarily, a Mary Sue is often a character that is implausibly connected to everyone.
Like in Harry Potter fanfiction you get a character that's the adoptive son of Snape and lost brother of Harry Potter who went to school in the US and is thus a billion times better at eveything than everyone else.
Or the main character from Star Trek Discovery, who is the adoptive daughter of Sarek and thus Spock's adoptive sister while being human, who was trained like a vulcan and is thus super uber smart and logical (she only redeems her Mary Sue status to some degree by being a complete emotional wreck and sucking at everything).

Also, Rey will be revealed to be a Skywalker or something in the end. I'm quite sure of it.

That is a problem that I have noticed with a lot of female characters in western media, they are almost, always, written as Mary-Sues. They are perfect, they are given no flaws as not to do so will be sexist. They are just as good, if not better, then a man at any given task. They are strong, independent, can hold their own, they are masculine, and they especially don't need no man. Personally, I find such female characters to be boring and cringe inducing. When I was a kid I never looked up or related to women like what modern Hollywood and western game devs keep churning out. Yes, its good to encourage girls to be strong and empowered and whatever, but give them some flaws for fucks sake. Sadly it seems writers can't, to do so would make them sexist. Women need to always be portrayed as perfect goddesses. Sighs......

Women need to always be portrayed as perfect goddesses.

In turn they end up being unrealistic and boring.

Flawed characters feel real. Regardless of their strengths, if a character is not flawed to some extent (and that flaw being a logical part of their being, not there just for the sake of it - like dumb characters being dumb for comic relief and nothing more), it doesn't work well in the long run. It's easier to connect and sympathize with a regular fuck-up that is every person on a planet than with a perfect being which never existed.

In the Force Awakens Rey is a full on Mary Sue, being an instant expert at everything, piloting the Falcon by herself, headshooting moving targets on her first time using a gun and unlocking all the Level 80 Jedi powers by just closing her eyes, is apparently chosen by Anakin's Lightsaber, everyone wants her to join them and even gets sent to find Luke despite being a complete unkwon to the Rebels. This not helped by Daisy Ridley rather poor acting skills, which you can see in all those ridiculous exagerated faces she was always making.
Some of the force shit could've been easily introduced by having her casually and unconciously use the force throughout the movie, maybe her rope breaks while she is scavenging the big ship but she softens her landing with the force without realizing it, something like that.

In The Last Jedi she is actually less of a Mary Sue because at least she fucks up a bit, actually has some self doubt and Daisy Ridley's acting skills have actually improved, about the only competent element in TLJ is her character.... altho she still ends up in a romance with Darth Emu in the most Fanfic shit ever in these movies.

The Solo movie is still set to come out in May, and there hasn't even been a trailer out and they fired the original director.
How is this not going to tank?
Although the cast doesn't appear to have Sana Solo in it, which is a huge missed opportunity.

Dunno, on the one side you have those that are picky about their Star Wars movies and will not be easily satisfied, so a messed up production will be in for a hard time. And on the other side you have those that only care about the diversity of the cast and how much it pisses off any perceived "old" fan, but the Solo movie doesn't appear to have the most diverse cast, and the character of Han Solo is the pinnacle of toxic masculinity.
Well, maybe we're in luck and it will actually be a good movie.

Instead of having a different thread when Solo comes out; we should just change the name of this thread to something like “Its that time of year ... Star Wars bashing” for Disney will have these about once a year.

I really miss the Lucasarts of the late 80s/90s/early 2000s before the company started to solely focus on Star Wars games, a lot of them of questionable quality and was eventually shut down when Disney bought Lucasfilm.

I am not sure that they were such a "house of ideas" but they did create some really enjoyable titles, some of which can be still enjoyed today.

Recently I have been able to play Indiana Jones and the Infernal Machine again thanks to the effort of some German fans who made an install program for modern Windows.
It is not perfect as the game still tends to crash sometimes when I want to access options or the save menu and it has a tendency to drop back into windows when my character dies but at least I can play it again.

I just wish the controls were not so tank like. I really prefer how the controls were improved in Indiana Jones and the Emperor's Tomb. That game's main problem is the lack of a quick save.

With media backing like that, how could anyone dislike TLJ?

Also, a question about Admiral Holdo. If she's the Vice Admiral of the fleet and thus quite obviously an important and supposedly famous staff member of a dwindling force, how come Poe doesn't recognize her at first?
I mean, if she's so famous and capable, how come Poe Dameron, who is Wing Commander at the time and thus also a high ranking officer in this fleet of very few surviving ships, apparently has never even seen her?
Not to mention that a dressing gown isn't exactly a military uniform befitting the highest ranking officer... I get that they were trying to go for the Mon Mothma look, but Mon Mothma wasn't exactly a military leader.

The last Jedi has no sense of good storytelling. And that's a good thing.

If you didn't like the movie it's your Fault.

Cis males are too entitled to movies being good.

Ah modern Entertainment think pieces.

Watched a video calling The Last Jedi an "Ateur film" and I just bursted out laughing.
